Hello, I'm from New Orleans, and I'd like to inform you that the voodoo spirit of Baron Samedi presides over both matters of death and law. It's an interesting pairing, I know. You can purchase a voodoo poppet in the Baron's image at any New Orleans voodoo shop or online from any reputable source. Make sure you poppet is ceremonially cursed by at least a High Priestess with an incantation of two weeks or more. This cursed poppet has many uses; for example, I built it an altar of spiced rum and Hershey's kisses last year in the hopes of success in law school, but now I use it to pray for merciful death!

I hope this information has helped you decide which spirits/deities would best suit you through law school!

Hershey is ten minutes away from where I live, so if those need to be fresh I can hook a brother up in exchange for mandrake and nightshade.

When I was a freshman at a public ivy college in the South, I lived next to two jocks who were very much unlike the nerdy jesus freaks who populated the rest of the dorm. They partied, watched porn, asked the kid with cerebral palsy to "get me some fries with that shake", and were generally pretty chill.

One of them was very smart, but the other incredibly dumb (we're talking sub-1100 on the old SATs dumb), and had only been accepted because he was one of the top ranked athletes in his sport in the country at the time. He was from Miami, and grew up on 8th Street, and knew the guys who ran the eponymous porn site.

He ended up transferring after being put on academic probation his freshman year, but before he did that he had some fun. But having fun in a southern college can be confusing, because many of the students are still wrestling with the freedom college gives them in the context of their hard-right Christian upbringing.

One night this kid - call him Blake, it fits - was hooking up with a girl. He was a good looking guy, she was all over him, few months into college. They went back to his room, yada yada yada, and the next morning he awoke to find her despairing, accusing him of having tricked her into sinful behavior with his dashing tempting good looks.

(I'm not trying to trivialize date rape etc, but this wasn't a case of that - it was a girl who fully consented to activity with him but felt horribly guilty about jesus the next morning)

Anyway, Blake was shaken, because this wasn't long after Duke, so he wrote up a contract (in sub-1100 on the SATs English) that said something to the effect of "yo, by signing this official contract of law you hereby consent to all acts of freak that may be be perpetrated upon this bed by his sexual majesty blake, etc etc etc", made a hundred copies, hung them above his bed with a little pen on a chain, and made girls sign the second they answered his room

I haven't seen or spoken with Blake since we both transferred, but he just popped up on my News Feed today with an educational announcement:

[T14] Class of 2013

Looks like he decided to make a career out of his prior experience with contracts.

Hi everybody! I've been in the thread for years and I've already asked these questions in IRC, but I feel like opening them up a little because xo's search functions are broken and the 3Ls in IRC are virulent freaks and all they tell me is to get signatures on a tams petition.

I'm a 1L at Duke looking for summer jobs. After graduating, I think I want to be an ADA somewhere (preferably in, like, Alameda or Kings county, but realistically[?] in some backwater capital shithole like Dauphin), but I know I don't know poo poo about poo poo yet. I don't expect to be at the top of my class. So here are some questions:

-How many jobs should I apply for? Dozens, hundreds?
-I'm looking at DAs, USAOs, and AsG. None of them (at the moment) are anywhere near North Carolina. Will the name of my school and my handful of public-interest softs be enough to get me a glance at most places, or do I really need to be vomiting out resumes and hoping that one sticks?
-Any other places I should consider, even if I don't want a firm or whatever in the long term?
-How bad/competitive is northern California? If I work in DA's offices both 1L and 2L summers out there, will I probably still be fenced out by local competition and the state's penuriousness?

Thank you all for your replies. I didn't realize how different DA office culture was from state to state, although I guess I should have. I'm going to add in a few fistfuls of metros and I'll try to find some more professors to talk to.

Is there a better way to find offices than just googling up state county maps and then searching for their corresponding DAs?

I'm kind of enjoying finals but i don't feel like they're going very well. On the plus side, it seems like I'm going to have a fairly easy time getting a 1L summer job doing something that I want somewhere I wouldn't hate.

I like the material enough that I'm probably not going to drop out even if I'm below median. And I guess I'm still sort of hoping that I can go be an ADA somewhere (even if it pays like $35k and is in the desert) so I'm going to keep on keepin' on unless something really bad happens. I was making significantly less than that before I came to law school doing work that I didn't like. And it's not like I was ever going to be a submarine captain or a Jedi if I hadn't come to Duke. And maybe we'll get another championship.

What kind of poo poo will I be asked in 1L-summer DA and USAO interviews? Will it be the a lot of pretty general, easy questions about who I am and why I want to be in X doing Y, or should I try to have a really good idea of what's going on in the city/district and/or have really good reasons for the trajectory of the Rest Of My Life?

I've been told that interviews for full-time employment have a lot of ethical hypos in them; should I expect anything like that?

Hi 0Ls!

I would like to tell you about a school called DUKE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW. It has a wonderful history of goon tolerance and, while we currently lack girls (30% of the entering class) and black people (2% of our entering class) and Irving is still on crutches, we have easy access to division 1 football tickets and it is possible to be accepted within three days of application.

We have had a goon in every class since '08 and would like YOU to be the next!

Duke is surrounded by a magical forest, beyond which lies a city with okay bars and unfortunate crime and another city with bad bars and sickeningly hot, desperate undergrads (http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/08/colleges-where-men-are-in-supply/). The Triangle also has good minor league baseball and a moth problem.

Please come to Duke. We would be happy to show you around.
