I thought that episode was awful. One of the reasons I love Adventure Time so much is how good the stories typically are. But in my opinion, Apple Thief was the worst episode of the show because it barely had one at all. It started off really promising and I thought we were in for an awesome mystery/crime story, and then it just pussed out at the end and rendered everything that happened before completely pointless. I have no reason to care about anything that happened in that episode. What was the point of showing us all that cool organized crime stuff without having it build up to anything? What if there actually was a big mystery involving Tree Trunks' apples and they got involved in a big mobster story and ended up having to solve the mystery just so they could eat apple pies? That would've been cool, right? Naaaah we can't figure out a good ending, just forget about all that mobster stuff and make it crows. What wasted potential. I'm gonna go watch a good episode like The Other Tarts or The Limit.

Can we get some new Tree Trunks gifs up in here? I'd like to see a gif of her crying near the beginning of the episode, as well as her ears shooting up after they talk to Raggedy Princess. Also chewing on toilet paper. I'll start the party

A piece of music has to be taken for what it is, and there's any number of things it could be. Adventure Time has always been about telling stories (isn't that the goal of most TV shows?) and I don't think Apple Thief was a good one.

I was hoping at the end Tree Trunks was going to say something like "Now we've found my apples, could you boys find my diamonds which were stolen?" Or something a long those lines to connect the mafia stuff.

I get that you didn't like the episode but your criticism doesn't make much sense. A sudden twist at the end making almost all of the actions taken during the episode pointless is pretty much what this show does. Taking the 2 episodes you mentioned, in The Other Tarts they were carrying the wrong tarts all along and the whole trip was pointless, and in The Limit they have the psychic tandem war elephant just wish all the consequences away and fly off. So there's always a story, but then it's pretty much always resolved in a silly way you aren't supposed to see coming. Magpies may be a little weak on the 'what a twist' scale, but it certainly wasn't out of character for the show.

If the magpies were taking the apples, then who attacked tree trunks and tore up her home? I can't help but wonder if she had a crate of diamonds she just forgot about. (Fun episode none the less --the other two threads in TV IV I follow are Dexter and Doctor Who, and it is so nice to come into this thread where people actually enjoy the show they're taking the time to post about.)

Not terrible, but nowhere near the best.

Anyone else feel like the short format of the show is hurting it? Nearly every episode I've seen lately has made me go "oh man, that's awesome, but I wish that episode was about twice as long". Maybe I'm just used to mostly watching hour long TV shows and, when not watching those, watching half-hour long ones, but it feels like AT's format is holding it back. I'd so much rather have 22-23 minute episodes than 11 minute ones so we can get more indepth in each one.

Aw man, no new adventure time and the dvr chose HIMYM over a good sounding regular show. I grab the episodes on iTunes at least. AT/RS is a wonderful way to start my week. As far as the time format goes I like it. There are some episodes that really could benefit from longer formats but I feel like most might drag on a bit. I hope they'll give them more leeway in the future. They've both proven to be a success. How is that idiotic looking "Secret Mountain Fort Awesome" allowed more time than two proven successful shows?

Nearly every episode I've seen lately has made me go "oh man, that's awesome, but I wish that episode was about twice as long". I think the short format is fine. I'm used to cartoons being two 11-minute shorts in a 30-minute block anyway from all the ones I watched as a kid. One of my favorite parts of Adventure Time and Regular show is how abrupt some of the endings can be. A good example is the end of "Tree Trunks" when it cuts to black almost right after Tree Trunks explodes. That had me laughing for like five minutes.

Yeah, as good as Mortal Folly/Recoil was, I think if AT expanded to a full half-hour, there might be issues where the plot drags. 11 minutes lets them do everything rapid fire and leave you wanting more rather than overstay it's welcome. The only recent episode I can think of that maybe would have worked better if it was longer was Fionna and Cake.

As far back as I can remember, most of the children's cartoons on Cartoon Network have been in 11 minute episodes, often two episodes per block thus taking up a 30 minute block. There's probably a multitude of reasons for this, one I can immediately think of is that it's cheaper and easier to just hammer out short scripts and animations rather than a 23 minute episode that would obviously require more action or more exposition. I think Cartoon Network is still experimenting with time-slots and different shows on that 8pm and after period and thus aren't doing the traditional 2 episode blocks.

A lot of shows used to be three separate seven minute shorts, if I remember correctly.

I think What Was Missing was way too short (and not just beause i'm some horrible shipper who wants more marceline and bubblegum) and I've also seen episodes that I thought went on a little too long. Maybe it just depends on the writer?

I'm a bit late to the party on this one but I'm surprised that anyone could *not* see a romantic subtext to Marceline's song in What Was Missing. Heck, forget subtext, the end of it was pretty much just text. Then again, a lot of people missed that Renly was gay in Game of Thrones (the book) and were surprised/upset at the overt gay scene in the show, so...
