That episode was hilarious. So many great lines. The one about food items procreating in tiny beds was pretty out there.

That was a pretty crazy episode. It has a different feel to it when they're allowed to go the whole 22 minutes. I really want an Adventure Time movie, now. At least a made-for-TV one. I think they have a universe legitimately interesting enough to scale up to a much longer running time.

It's pretty strange they chose to permanently change PB's character so she could be an actual love interest to Finn. I wonder what Ice King will do if he's not trying to kidnap her anymore.

I think the real question now is are we going to start seeing a Lich-possessed snail hidden in each episode, shaking his fist menacingly?

Reading Mr. Muto's Formspring I think I read some spoilers about PB's age for those who are curious: Some kid said something about reading storyboards and seeing that she'll be back to her normal age again eventually. I feel like they'll do an episode where Finn and PB l-l-likeeachotheralot, but then they get the gum to make her normal again and it's a bittersweet moment. If the series goes on long enough, though, I can see older-Finn marrying the princess and becoming king.

This might be uncomfortably close to fanfiction....

So before I go and drop $40 on both seasons on iTunes, can anyone tell me if they're in HD or not? I've never bought something off iTunes and the store is so horribly designed I can't find any info on the page for the show.

I'd rather just buy a DVD or something but cartoon network apparently hates money and is willing to let apple take a huge cut, I can't find anywhere else to legitimately pay for good quality versions of this show.

They're not HD, sadly. Or at least season 1 isn't. I don't own season 2.

That makes this kind of funny. I would watch a reality TV show about the drama and cliques of the CartoonNetwork staff.

I don't understand their dig at AT, though. Are they saying Marvel dialogue is more clever than AT, or that AT's quality has gone down over time, or what. I don't get it.

I feel so stupid for not getting the ending until I came in here and read about it. I'm as oblivious as Finn and Jake.

I think the episode was weird because it was a more serious one, but not in a world-building way like Susan Strong or The Lich King.

Both episodes this season have been kind of dark, actually. Ketchup massacre...

Next week's episode preview looked pretty promising.

The ghosts were all best bros like Finn and Jake who had fallen for the Fight King's trick and killed each other. When they fought Finn, they would all cry and beg forgiveness from seemingly random people, who the end of the episode revealed to be their best bros/fellow gladiator ghosts.

Is the gender-swapped episode 11 minutes or 22?

Seems almost unfortunate if it's only 11 minutes. I'm really excited for it.

At first I didn't like Fiona's voice, but its grown on me. People seem to be expecting her to just be a female Finn, but I think they're extending the "everything is opposite" motif to the characters' personalities, as well. So it makes sense for her to be less cocky and overconfident.

If standards and practices had any problems with the content of the episode they would have requested changes during the storyboarding phase. I don't think it will get edited.

I'm pretty sure Standards and Practices reviews the storyboards before anything is actually animated, so they've most likely already okayed it. The TV-PG rating gives this show a lot more leeway than the TV-Y7 or TV-G rated shows CN has done in the past.

That episode was even better than I'd hoped it would be.

Adventure Time has never been a progressive show, gender-wise. Almost all of the female characters are princesses who get kidnapped constantly. Even Princess Bubblegum, who is a scientific genius, is helpless against the Ice King. Marceline is strong and independent, but she's basically a "bad girl" stereotype. Finn, the hero, solves all his problems through violence, and is not a fan of learning.

A lot of times the show will start to give a positive message, but pull back at the last second for a joke twist. The episode where a cow has a bag covering her ugly-udder is a good example of this. They tell her not to be ashamed, and to take the bag off. When she does, the forest animals are all disgusted and make her cover it back up. It's funny, but the satire is probably lost on the younger viewers. I think that sums up the entire series. These problems are in every episode, Fiona and Cake is just one more example.

I love the show and thought the episode was great, but I can also see how it's problematic.

It's sort of weird that Fiona has semi-realistic anatomy, while Finn is a pill with sticks for legs. Even Marceline isn't so sexualized.

Edit: Another great thing, Jake was essentially Bender for the whole episode.

There were a couple lines that were unquestionably in Bender-voice.

Even that Frederator video says that Marceline and Bubblegum are ex-lovers. I'm not sure how else you're supposed to interpret Marceline wanting to "drink the red from [PB's] pretty pink face" and then PB saying it was "distasteful." I don't think CN would really allow them to ever blatantly declare the show's characters as bisexual, though.

I can see how some people might prefer the wacky war-elephant episodes, but I really like the ones that flesh out the world and characters. Not enough cartoons bother with that stuff, these days. In my mind, it's what separates the Pixars from the Dreamworks.

But if we don't have characters in kids' cartoons openly discussing their sexual preferences, the bigots win!

Honestly, even if the writers intended Marceline and PB to be ex-lovers, it's not like a show where the highest amount of physical intimacy is a warm love-hug would really discuss it. And a cartoon show featuring characters made out of candy and rainbows isn't exactly the time or the place.

(Besides, everyone knows the real gay couple is Death and Peppermint Butler.)

I don't mean to completely derail the thread with this, but I think this attitude is the problem.

Finn has a crush on Princess Bubblegum. When she was 13, they dated. There was a wizard battle where a kiss from her was the prize. Jake is dating Lady Rainicorn. The gender-swapped episode had heavily implied sexuality.

The show already has characters openly discussing their sexual preferences, you just don't notice because their preference is straight. This is exactly the attitude that including gay characters in cartoons is meant to fight.
EDIT: Rainbow Princess

The Triumphant posted:

I definitely recognize that, but the difference is that our society recognizes Finn wanting a kiss from Princess Bubblegum as "normal". We expect that in a narrative and it's pretty much a given that our hero will have a crush on the princess. If they just offhandedly mentioned that Marceline also wants to kiss Princess Bubblegum then that is going to start a shitstorm that the show doesn't need.

I wish it weren't this way-- and you're probably right that I didn't phrase my point in a particularly supportive manner --but there's no way to outright introduce the topic of queer sexuality in a kids' show right now without it starting a giant fight. I think that doing little hints and ambiguous statements like this episode did is still pretty far ahead of most other cartoons.

Gunter's a woman?!

Okay, yeah, sorry if it seemed like I jumped on you. I definitely get that with today's social climate, making an openly gay character would be suicide for the show. It's just that a lot of people really do think that acknowledging homosexuality in any way is "flaunting" it and inappropriate for children without realizing that heterosexuality is flaunted constantly, in everything, even children's shows.

I didn't really like the episode until the second half. 22 minute episodes should be big adventures, not bottles.

It sort of had the same problem "What Was Missing" did, I can't imagine any kid actually sitting through it without getting bored. Even I was kind of bored until the surprise Ice King backstory, which was great. But the episode felt too self-indulgent. A bunch of great jokes spread out over way too much filler.

That said, the episode was totally saved by the ending and BMO. BMO is the best side-character.

During the scene where (real) Finn meets Flame Princess for the first time I finally realized how amazing this show's audio is. They have a bunch of short little musical clips that give the scene lots of punch, especially when her hair goes all "firey" and she dashes out the window.

I've gone back to watch other episodes while paying attention to this, and wow. Really great music!

Bass Bottles

I hate to be a downer, but I don't really love the "main" story in the comic. It has so many callbacks and catchphrases that it feels more like fanfiction than official Adventure Time media. Characters seem slightly off, and the Lich probably shouldn't talk so much. In the show he felt like a special villain in a special super episode, in the comics he's just a more-competent Ice King.

I love Dinosaur comics, though. I think Ryan North just needs some time to get comfortable writing in the AT universe. It definitely shows promise.

I love the shorter side-stories at the end of each issue, especially with the varying art styles.
