![]() What is Thief? A game about Thievery! This, like many of my LP's, will be a blind run. I have always wanted to play the Thief games and since you guys asked me to do it, here it is! I decided to go ahead and also stick to my format of playing all the games in a given series and play the entire trilogy of these games. Whoa, Thief Gold is old! 11 Years old in fact! It was a bitch and a half to get the game running let alone what I have to do to edit in the cut scenes and make Fraps happy. I don't understand why this game is such a pain in the rear end when many games that were around way before it (Fallout, Any pre-2000 Blizzard Game, etc.) work fine on modern computers. Way to go Eidos! How will the Videos be Formatted? I plan to make it so that each mission will have its own episode. If a mission takes a long time to accomplish then I will have multiple "parts" to an episode in order to keep things easy to follow for future viewers. I currently plan to limit videos in length to 20 or 25 minutes (hopefully finding a good "stopping point" between multiple points). Also since Fraps can not record the videos or menus in Thief Gold (not sure about the other games), I will have to edit in the cut scenes and such during editing. This means you will likely not have my stellar commentary during cut scenes. Oh well! What else? Well since I have a job with some pretty awful hours right now, updates will not be daily like I did back with Penumbra. I will hopefully have some videos done over the weekends late at night (or very early morning) but you will have to be patient and not expect an update every time you refresh the thread. Sorry! Also, Thief could crap out on me and explode at any minute due to the technical difficulties it has with modern computers so that could add delay in the future.

The reason you have trouble with the videos is that Looking Glass used a codec from Intel which does not have a version for any windows past Win98. EDIT: You missed the basketball court in the training mission. Random Stranger fucked around with this message at May 29, 2010 around 09:41 |

Is the non-Fraps recorder "Camstadia" you are referring to in the first video the freeware CamStudio or TechSmith's Camtasia? Despite my tech-scrubbery I wanted to shallowly search some forums to see if there was some known way to avoid your cursor/crashing issue so we could see some menus in game, but you can't google blind, man.

Oh hey, you're actually doing expert difficulty. Khad, if you feel like you're not going to be able to pull the game off on expert, PM me. What I'm thinking is if you want to switch out to normal, I can dust off my game and record the levels on expert, and just post my expert level a few days after your normal level with us just doing commentary in post.

If it's seriously going to net you two hundred bucks a month, go ahead and turn on the ads. I'm seconding the stipulation that at least a portion of it gets spent on Crosby, though. So when is this game set? The beginning animatic/cutscene thing makes me think it's modern day, but you're using decidedly medieval weaponry (although the sight on the bow tips the scale to present day).

The Thief games have a fantasy setting. Basically a medieval society on the cusp of technological revolution, hence stuff like gas lighting and limited electricity and steam engines.

I'd also guess that LG's "Dark" engine wasn't quite as well-coded as other 3D engines used in games at the time which is why it causes so much trouble for Fraps. Of course I may be talking out of my rear end but I never liked the feel of it, jerky movement, low-poly models, grainy low-res cinematics, the list goes on. The "Dark" engine is also my least favorite part of System Shock 2.

It's not that it was THAT badly coded, IIRC it just concentrated on different stuff like how the AI reacts to sound and the whole light-shadow thing. I might be talking out of my rear end, though. The feel of the games is odd, that's true.

I'm glad to see another Crosby LP, Thief is one of my favorate games and I look forward to seeing how you do. also I don't care about the ads I normaly pause vids at the start for a bit so it can load anyway, another 15 seconds won't make a difference.

I wouldn't play this on Expert difficulty because it isn't that fun for the first time through and you miss out on a lot of game mechanics (you will never have the satisfaction of learning how to compensate for arrow drop to take out a guard long-distance, you won't have to hide bodies so guards don't stumble over them). It isn't really suitable for a blind LP at all, it is more of a fun personal challenge after you have already played through the game once or twice. I would stick to Hard, personally.

Looking forward to seeing all of these in action. The only experience I had with the series was Deadly Shadows. The technology levels in Thief are a bit... strange, but it's an endearing strange. I think of it as Arcanum without the guns, really. Really, I hope Thief 4 continues the whole clockpunk feel when it comes out.

Awesome ![]() Also, Khad, you can avoid looking at the map (in the menu) by making use of these; just click on the level name's link and scroll to the bottom for screen caps of said maps. Just print 'em out/put them in a link somewheres. There aren't INTERACTIVE CURSORS~ or anything of the sort. The maps you get are hand-drawn scribbles typically with notes

Oh, man. The Penumbra stuff was great, and I love the Thief series (especially Thief II), so I'm looking forward to this. Difficulty choice is a bit tricky. Harder difficulties are definitely going to be rough for a blind playthrough, since you generally can't kill anybody and you may have to wander all over the place looking for a few last bits of loot. On the other hand, the harder difficulties give you extra objectives, like actually having to make your way out after looting a place, stealing specific objects, or other bits of interest... some of which show up on Hard, but others only on Expert. I think starting with Expert isn't a bad idea, to get a feel for the limitations on it. I won't hold it against you if you end up dialing it down to Hard, though.
