For shipping ammo through UPS, can I still use the ORM-D cartridges label, or so I have to use the new Ground ltd qty labels? If I need the new label, does someone have a good printable version of it, hopefully small enough to fit on a 6" square box?

I've shipped a lot of ammo in the last few months. I just write ORM-D on all sides with a sharpie. The new labels aren't until next year I don't think.

Does anyone know where I might be able to buy one of those wooden crates 7.62x54R spam cans come packaged in? I want the crate for a photography project, but have no need (or budget) for 880 rounds of 54R.

You might want to just try phoning AIM, Classic Arms, etc. I imagine they probably throw tons of them away. No promises, but I"d be fairly surprised if you couldn't find someone willing to sell you one for a really nominal price plus shipping.

If you are a registered collector though you can get as many as you want.

Hello, TFR. I now have in my possession a Remington 870. This could be my first firearm. I was hoping it would be good for home defense but I'll be honest and state that my apartment is pretty small. This long weapon isn't exactly suited to corners. It could be modded? The owner is willing to sell it to me for $225.oo. I'm inclined to buy it. Maybe I could mod it a little for the size of my small apartment. Even if not, I do like the shotgun. I understand the action now and it feels tight and strong. I uploaded a bunch of pics to imgur but I don't quite get how to use it yet, so here is the album (I hope) http://imgur.com/a/4JOlF Would you pay $225 for this Remington 870 based on these pictures? If you can see these pictures? Is there anything else you would need to know before making the commitment? Newbie looking for help.

Replacing the barrel is very easy, but new ones aren't cheap. Count on a little over $100 for that. Now, $225 is a pretty good price for an 870 Express that looks like it's in good shape, but for $350 you could really be looking at a brand-new one with a shorter barrel.

If you want a gun for protection inside your apartment, that gun in question will be far too long, and the 18" barrel that you'll need to make it reasonable for HD will be at least 100 dollars, like this guy : http://www.midwayusa.com/product/24...ight-parkerized You are better off looking in a gun shop for a used mossberg 500 if you are on a budget.

Not to mention that you can find a used Wingmaster for $250 without looking too hard and end up with a MUCH nicer firearm to boot. edit: seriously, we are a nation awash in relatively inexpensive, used Wingmasters. How they are able to keep selling expresses is beyond me. Also you can see the start of rust on that barrel in one of the pics. God drat they must be really going full retard with how lovely the park is getting these days.

Are the Wingmasters and the 870 express essentially the same shotgun, Wingmasters being held to higher standard of parts an manufacturing (not plastic trigger groups, higher QC, some fit & finish differences) ? Are they compatible with parts? Like can a magpul stock be put on a Wingmaster, just as an example?

The only thing you might run into is that older 870s used a different mag tube cap, so newer mag tube caps/extensions might work themselves loose as you fire.

Dr. Faustus posted:Would you pay $225 for this Remington 870 based on these pictures? If you can see these pictures? Is there anything else you would need to know before making the commitment? Definitely. That's got a nice set of laminated wood on it, and a supermag barrel. Any idea if it's got a supermag receiver? Having the ability to fire 3.5" shells isn't really important but it is fun occasionally, and it does increase the gun's value a little. But as said before, putting a shorter barrel on is easy to do. I don't know off the top of my head if a supermag receiver will take "normal" 870 barrels, but judging by what little I can see in the pictures it looks like it will. As noted, if a home defense gun is your primary goal it might make sense to look for a police surplus Wingmaster and be prepared to jump on one if they show up for less than $300 again. But at $225 that Express is still a solid gun for the price. If you don't plan on going turkey hunting or doing serious skeet shooting, you could always sell the existing barrel to help cover the cost of a shorter one.

I'm going to assume Chicago/Illinois laws trump the Gun Control Act of 68' that lets an individual build their own firearm provided its for their personal use and not for resale?

I'm pretty sure IL itself has nothing to say on the subject. Chicago might, and I'd hit up the Illinois thread for that half of the question.

I want to thank all of you for the informed and wise advice. I've decided to give the gun back to the owner. I really can see that barrel being way too long for my intended purpose, and if a replacement puts me in "new Mossberg" territory, then I want the new Mossberg 500. I really do like this shotgun, but after looking at your modded barrels (something I am not prepared to attempt) it's a no-brainer. You guys are the best. I just lurk here but I love wasting hours in the picture thread. I'll come back when the girlfriend and I decide to go through with the CCW course and I'm looking for a pistol. In other words, next year.
