Reposted from the end of the last thread. Two questions... 1.) Contemplating a dedicated setup for my Ceiner 1911 .22lr conversion kit. Am I better off building from a bare frame or buying a cheap 1911 and discarding/selling/stashing slide/barrel? I'm leaning towards building since it could be cheaper than buying a whole extra 1911. Not like I need high-end parts for what will be a plinker. 2.) Where in the US might a man be able to take his dad to fire an M79 grenade launcher? My dad carried one in Vietnam, and to this day one of his big wants is to fire one again. He'd be happy with chalk rounds, he just wants to fire one again. I'm trying to convince him to spend some of my inheritance on an actual M79, but no luck with that. Yet.

I'm sure someone there would have one to shoot.

UPDATE ![]() Not too long ago I inquired about he legalities of machining an AR lower. After speaking with members of the CNC Gunsmithing forum and a consultation with an attorney, it appears that as long as I am the person that presses the 'Go' button and the lower is for me; I am 100% legal. I will be taking it a step further by keeping my cousins role 'supervisory.'

Am I better off building from a bare frame or buying a cheap 1911 and discarding/selling/stashing slide/barrel? I'm leaning towards building since it could be cheaper than buying a whole extra 1911. Not like I need high-end parts for what will be a plinker. A "cheap" 1911 is still going to run you $300+ (unless you're on good terms with crack/meth-heads and don't mind wiping the previous owner's blood off the gun), but has the advantage of being complete and functional. (Optimally; you can always buy busted poo poo, maybe save a few bucks there - Bubba is always selling Frankenguns.) It also allows the option of just throwing the centerfire top end back on if needed. A bare-frame build can start out cheaper, and even stay there depending on what parts you can come up with at a discount; your main issue is going to be the specialised tools and operations needed to fit and finish the gun - you won't have to do a lot of the frame/barrel-specific fitting (upper lugs, barrel hood, headspacing and chamber finishing, bushing/barrel fitting), but all the vital clockworkery (hammer/sear/thumb safety is the most finicky) will still need to be done. This can be simplified somewhat by using "pre-fit" parts - my method was to buy a baggie of parts that all came off the same 1911, and thus had been (presumably) functioning and fitted properly, and drop them into a used (and apparently properly working) frame. A number of companies offer pre-fitted hammer/sear sets, but you still may need to tweak those - and they're (usually) not cheap. If you want the experience (albeit limited in scope) of building a 1911, the bare-frame method will be fine - especially as a dedicated .22 will skip some of the more difficult barrel/slide work. However, it's both unlikely to cost less, and may possibly not work as well, as a "complete lower" build. If I was making another dedicated .22 myself, my first choice would be to try and scare up a used-but-mostly-functional complete pistol - a mangled feed-ramp (hello Dremel Dan!) won't mean a hell of a lot to a .22 kit, unless something *really* destructive was done. Second choice would be seeing what Foster Industries has on sale and (slowly) picking up all the other bits as I could afford them, then trying to sleaze the specialised tools rather than buy 'em. thermobollocks posted:My question: What the hell do I do about the rings forming in my .357 cylinder when I shoot .38? What's the concensus on CZv82 vs. the CZ 75, aside from price. the 82 felt slimmer and made the webbing on my hand hurt a bit after a couple of mags compared to my 75 and p01 which don't hurt at all. All are very accurate. The trigger on the cz75 in DA or decocked DA can be a bit hard to reach with smaller hands and will tend in you pulling your shots low when you first get it. It is a bit easier with the p01 but it still catches you when you get lazy and in a hurry with maintaining a sight picture. I assume bigger hands would be fine with this. Where are you located? What are you doing with the gun? Which version of the 75 were you looking at?

If it is Bullseye in Lawrenceville, they only have FA guns for rent. It is an 25' indoor range. They might be able to point you to some other place though. I have to mention the city because there is another Bullseye in Cumming. Most of the indoor ranges her let you shoot FA weapons. No .50 Brownings though.

That reminds me of the most awesome assignment I've ever had while working for the federal government. I was in Chicago, part of the U.S. contingent of the advance team for Lady Di's visit in the mid nineties. One of the things I had to do as part of the advance security detail was to hang out with one of Di's smoking hot personal assistants. Her job was was to wear different skirts and go up and down the stairs to the stage where Diana would be giving a speech. I had to stand at the bottom of the stairs and see if I could see up her skirt. We did this for hours. "Can you see up it now? How about from this angle? Stand over there. I'll go up the stairs again. Can you see up it now?" And then she would try a different skirt and we'd go through it all again. They REALLY wanted to make sure no photographer got a Lady Di Panty Shot.

Locus posted:I'm also pretty sure it's very difficult to create and maintain a foolproof "one-step" AR-15 receiver machine. Fully half the machining is cosmetic or at the very least non-critical. If the clients didn't care so much what they looked like, and/or depending on the type of mills at your disposal, you could get way closer to one receiver popping out per button-push. Here's an idea: figure out what steps need to be done to take an 90% forging and make it just barely functional. Write up your G-code, and have Bubba come hit the go switch. He goes and gets a cup of coffee (here's another idea: attach a coffee shop to your machine shop, so you get 'em from both sides!), comes back and picks up his ugly-but-functional, 100% legal untraceable blah blah buzzwords AR lower. If you weren't married to the idea of a solid one-piece lower, bolting one together out of a few pieces seems like it would be really easy with some basic thinky-work. edit: Thinking now about billet only, you could eliminate tons of machining passes if you made the receiver one continuous width along its entire length. Then you could sell custom extended trigger and hammer pins to fit your custom simplified lower design (cut them out of rod stock and make a hefty profit), or, for a fee, you could install the LPK for them. walrusman fucked around with this message at Jun 11, 2010 around 05:11 |

I'm pretty sure some guy did what you guys are talking about. It was an %80 lower that was essentially bolted together so it required very basic machining processes to finish up. He ran into trouble with a service he offered to "help" a person finish one of his lowers. He was doing too much of the work or something like that so it wasn't a legit %80 lower anymore. At least that's what I remember reading about, I could be wrong on some of the details.
