Did you actually clean the jets and needles by running wire through them? Because properly gunked up jets will definitely not respond to just soaking and air.

OK, so why not try swapping all the internals of the KLX carb into the KLR carb body and see what happens?

It's also slightly odd that the KLX would be perfectly fine with KLR jetting. Have you checked the valve clearance? I don't think that would respond to jetting but figured I'd ask.
Yeah that is probably the next step is swapping parts to see if i can isolate the problem. Just ran out of time last weekend to try that.

I have not checked the valve clearances because with the complete KLR carb it always started quickly when hot and ran nicely.

It is odd that it ran with the KLR jetting, I put 200 miles on with the KLR carb and I was impressed with how it ran, it hit a 105 (don't know if the KLX has that speedometer error the KLR has though).

I am dumb and forgot to write down the needle, main jet and idle air jet sizes from both carbs when I was tearing things apart. I do remember that the KLX had a 138 main jet and the KLR had a 148 main jet, which doesn't really make sense, but I don't know what the needle is in either of them, so it is hard to draw any conclusions.

I also made sure the float height was the same in the KLX carb as the KLR carb.

Got myself a 2012 black and up to about 2500 miles. Thermobob installed but no doohickey. I think they fixed the doohickey thickness but the idle spring dealy is fugged up. I just ordered some sw-motech crash bars and Happy trails Cascade panniers. Ill toss some photos up and maybe a video of me installing as Ive not seen any Cascade photos or video other than the HT site. Blows. They are sending the rack for the panniers but the actual cases don't ship until next week on the 29th June. bah..at least the rack will be installed by then

Well I tried swapping most of the internals from the KLR CVK carb into the carb body of the KLX, no change. Only thing I did not switch over was the slide because it for whatever reason did not move freely. I compared passage ways between the carbs and cleaned out with wire ones that I was able to on the KLX carb.

If I recall correctly, the stock KLR 650 didn't come with a fuel filter. Mine did. I think the fuel filter is causing some issues with the fuel line, causing it to kink. Is it recommended I keep the fuel filter, or can I ditch it? Does anyone know the specific fuel line size I should be using?

Don't you wish all '07s were this cool?

There's a screen in your petcock. a screen at the carbs (usually), and if it didn't come with a filter, why be concerned about it? Unless you have a reason to run a filter (your carbs are clogging from rust from your tank), don't bother with the filter, especially if it didn't come with one stock.

Plastic tank = no rust. I don't tend to throw in handfuls of sand and gravel when I refuel, so I don't see a need for the filter either. I'll try to figure out the right hose size.

Whatever you can jam on there without kinking is the right size for a KLR.

For any other motorcycle, OEM ones are nice because they're prebent to the appropriate shape (if your fuel line has an elbow in it's routing). They're also usually a bit thinner than the stuff you can pick up at any auto store.

But you can just pull the line off and bring it in the store with you and they'll match it, no problem.

6mm is right size. 1/4in is slightly too large.

Edit: I couldn't get the right seize metric line at my local Autozone for some reason. I ended up buying it from a Honda service dept at a dealer.

Well, finally after ordering my cascade 38L, 7.5 inch panniers from happy trails on June the 19th I got them via UPS last night and got them hooked up. The only thing that bugs me is those screw on pucks go on the inside. Not a huge deal, as they sent extra non-puck screws so one can attatch those instead so you have to use a socket to take them off instead. Not a big deal and Im digging them so far...fall camping season is getting close and closer.

So the problem I had where my bike would hesitate under "heavy" acceleration, and actually stall out while riding once, seems to have been fixed by Sweet Lady Seafoam. I've run about a whole bottle through now in two tanks, and the problem seems to have resolved itself for the most part.

What the heck would be causing hesitation/stalling that would be helped by Seafoam in the gas tank? Something with the carbs?

Question. I hauled my KLR from Colorado to Georgia on the back of my truck. Started fine in CO, will not start in GA. Do I just need to re-jet the carbs for the lower elevation?

I'm in Germany until some time in October, so it's not the end of the world. I do wanna ride when I get home, though.

Sorry. It turns over, but it won't catch. It was fine when I left Colorado before I pumped all the gas out of it using a hand pump. Now when I start it, it just keeps turning over but doesn't start.

So did they ever fix the oil burning problem in the 08+'s? My friend and I are planning a ride from Toronto to Argentina and I'm seeing that there's a good chance you can end up with one that burns like a quart a fillup. There seems to be a big bore kit that fixes it but I'm not sure what that would cost. Anyone here know anything about it?

My early 08 burned it pretty fast if I kept it over 4500rpm or did any engine braking. I put a check valve in the crankcase breather tube and it reduced the burning a lot. I still check the oil level at startup and gas stops, though.

apparently if you bore out the engine it will fix the oil burning problems.
here is eagle mikes link, there is also the option to send in your cylinder and he'll bore it out for 115$. which is recommended unless you know of a good machinist.

Someone give me one good reason why I shouldn't snag an old, well-heeled but in great mechanical shape, KLR650 this weekend for $1500? It's exactly what I want, I think. Not a garage queen, been all over the place and ready for more, comes with some pelican cases, etc. Previous owner seems awesome, and the engine is from a '99. I'll specify these are Chicagoland prices so 1,500 seems pretty fair for a well-maintained bike.

The current tank is 6.1 gal. That'll take you aprox. 250 miles. I don't think you'd need to go much further than that on a tank of gas, and the stock seat wouldn't let you anyway, it's so uncomfortable for most people (it's really soft).

The 250 miles is based on the tank holding more like 5 gal. that is usable. To the the rest of it you have to tip the bike over on it's side, to get it over the hump, right? Besides, putting more fuel that far up on the bike makes it top heavy.

yeah reserve's reserve is the right side of the saddle part of the tank. Not much is usually over there but it is handy to know that if you tip the bike over you can get a little more.

250 miles per tank is fairly safe estimate but it really depends.

I drove all the way across kansas with the throttle locked fully open, it would only hold 75(bad headwind). It got about 32 MPG doing that so I was filling up every 150 miles

Five degrees to starboard!

Speaking of KLR 650s, mine started acting funny today. I started it up this morning and was able to hit 80 without even trying on the freeway. About a hundred miles later it was way down on power -- I'm talking struggling to hit 60 on flat ground. Put some new premium gas in it, no change. Same feeling of low power on both the primary and reserve pickups. Fuel line is not kinked. Valve clearances were checked less than 1000 miles ago (probably closer to 500).

The power delivery feels roughly normal, maybe a little sluggish, throughout the first half of the throttle's travel. Once you hit the second half, however, it doesn't feel like it's changing at all (maybe going down slightly). The engine noise sounds different in the second half of the travel, kind of like a woodpecker (the thudthudthud from the engine sounds more hollow).

Any thoughts?

That really sounds like a fuel delivery issue...Do you have an inline fuel filter? Do you get gas out of the fuel line to the carb? If it's a vacuum petcock, is the line to the petcock leaking/damaged?
