Well, if it's about picking a scene, this one's inevitable for someone. I'll stake my claim to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYKloZRwLu4 Even just watching that bit completely out of context is still really unsettling for me. Even if you don't strictly speaking like a sequence like that, it's definitely the most memorable one in the series for me.

I think it's actually the reason for the name of the episode, actually.

Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of Sinclair but I think he had a really good voice. I enjoyed his reading of the opening credits quite a bit.

The thing about Londo, I think, is that you're supposed to like him, but you're also supposed to feel somewhere on the scale of 'vaguely uncomfortable' to 'bad' that you do like him.

Daimo posted:The Narn assassin? I thought that was hilarious because they were obviously made for Humans, like they had no idea lenses could fix eyesight until Humans came along with them. As far as that goes... http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/countries/us/guide/005.html posted:RE: the glasses...it's not something I've been able to figure out how to mention, but the Narn pride themselves on their physical perfection. Hence there is no market for physical aides; it's something to be ashamed of. So they have to crib stuff from other species, like glasses that have a prescription close enough to be useful. I have *no* idea how to work that into a script, and am not sure it is even a good idea to do so. So it's more that they knew, it's just embarassing enough to do so that they don't really produce them themselves that much.

As far as Centauri Prime, there is an explanation for that, at least...http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/countries/us/guide/070.html posted:Only 3 billion people on Centauri Prime?

alby mangels posted:Agreed, besides when you've got a name that cool you might as well milk it. Don't think Human Prime could ever catch on, doesn't have the same ring. Pretty sure Delenn says something about the Minbari having three languages at some point. Either way, I see a lot of this myself as being shaken out in the mass-translation-to-English-so-the-viewer-can-understand sort of dealie, too. And then too of course the theoretical conceit (albeit one that doesn't come up during watching much) that the whole show is an after-the-fact documentary, so a lot of the detail of that nature will be not present in favour of showing what it's actually about.

alby mangels posted:In "The Very Long Night of Londo Mollari" (amazing episode btw, who says S5 sucks), Vir tries to hug Lennier, who is uncomfortable with the idea. You would think that Centauri would be more likely to turn down a hug, given the location and sensitive nature of their tentacles. I think they fold in when they're not in use. And, I mean, they can't be that sensitive if they can be used to manipulate cards.

The only one of the movies that is really worth watching is In the Beginning. You may or may not want to watch that before you start the series. It depends on whether you think knowing backstory that isn't revealed for a couple seasons will spoil anything for you or not. It drives a lot of the action and knowing the stuff can enhance the experience, but, well, it's just not gone into. I think mid-season 4 is the best place to put it in otherwise. The other movies... eh, at the end I guess. I wouldn't bother with Crusade at all.

Annnyway, to get away from the doom and gloom, I've got Bruce Boxleitner and Walter Koenig coming to a local con in about a month and I want to get something signed. It's not exactly a series rife with merchandise and I don't have a lot of use for a picture. I'm thinking DVD set, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Stabbey_the_Clown posted:I think there are some interview books with the cast that JMS sells through CafePress. Those would be a bit different, and are easier to autograph. That one's not a bad idea, though they seem to come pre-signed... on the other hand it's easy enough to pick a book with no overlap. 70 bucks is really pricey (less pricey than a boxset of the show, to be sure) but just flipping through the contents that looks pretty great. I'll think about it, I have a couple days to decide before I have to start worrying if purchases will arrive in time. ibntumart posted:Just score one of these little fellas and have the jersey signed, of course! Yeah, it's not the story of the shadow war, it's the story of the last of the babylon stations. The stuff going on with earth isn't an epilogue, it's a parallel story, one that's been going on just as long.

So I was 'testing out' my new DVDs, and I have to say, for all that there's really a lot of good in Parliament of Dreams, the dialogue between Sinclair and Catherine Sakai is just criminal. A lot of it's (both) their delivery but ughhhh.

Rapey Joe Stalin posted:I think that stands beside Ivanova's mating dance as the series low point. See, I can at least derive amusement from that bit. That sequence strikes me as something that was funny on paper, and probably was funny in person (and at least the lurker's guide says that much was so), and just wasn't on tv. I can see how someone might have thought it was funny. I have no idea how anyone could have thought the Sinclair/Sakai dialogue was any good, let alone after hearing them actually say it out loud. neongrey fucked around with this message at Oct 14, 2012 around 05:05 |
