She asked me who I had been talking with previously, I realized I hadn't caught his name, and described him as accurately as I could and she just gave me this blank look and said "That describes just about all the guys on the floor here"

What you want is a Homer Award. Varying levels, bigger chunks of cash every higher level, I don't remember how much it is anymore, it's been years since I worked at HD, but I think $50 for a bronze, $100 for a silver?

Like I understand that it's a stressful time of the year and would love some vacay time during the busiest most miserable part of the year at work too, but anybody who actually does this is being a huge dick to their coworkers. I seriously wish November and December were just flat out barred from being used for vacations. There's an old woman in my department who takes a vacation in December every single year, usually one of the bakers does it too but I think the double vacation he took in October (two weeks back to back) tapped him out for paid off time and if he has any more it's just like two personal days. And what's with those assholes who refuse to work Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day? Who the gently caress do they think they are that they're better than anyone else and don't have to be there just in case someone wants to go buy something last minute? Your kids will be there after work, you selfish pricks! But in all seriousness, really dude?

Sam's Club (and Costco as well I imagine) it's in the member agreement that you agree to have your receipt checked and they check every single receipt, bar none. I make polite chit-chat with the people at the door when I shop at Sam's Club and help move things around so they can count my items. Anywhere else "No thanks, have a nice day!" and just keep walking.

So I got 25% off a couple of black sweaters that I proceeded to wear everywhere for the next two years. Their dress code was strict (all black all the time, dressy shoes for women, ties for men, etc) and my wardrobe still has too much black in it, but at least it wasn't a branded polo shirt. Same as when I worked Macy's, a long time ago (Or maybe it just feels that way, though it is like a decade ago), but with the associate discount and the Macy's Money for card signups and the coupons, I rarely paid much for anything there, uniform or otherwise.

Back in the day I worked maintenance at the biggest big box retailer in America. I had more than one occasion where it looked like someone in the womens' room had done a ribbon dance routine with a used tampon in a stall. Blood just covering everything, everywhere, every surface. There was and is one thing I will not handle even when working maintenance, and that's human blood (Other than my own. I cut myself, I'm cleaning up the mess once I get cleaned up and bandaged). You are not paying me enough regardless of my pay grade, and there is never going to be enough PPE to make me feel safe. Yes I'm a big baby, but we all have our limits.

Sears wanted to hire me on the spot so bad with my past experience at Kmart, but they would only pay me minimum wage and would work me poo poo hours. Today I have interviews at Walmart (cashier, ugh), and both the "home improvement" stores. I hear that both home improvement stores are pretty awesome to work for, and I think it would be neat to learn a lot about home maintenance and stuff. I went through the phone screening for HD, and they offered 9.50 an hour with most weekends off. Hoping this isn't just a ploy to get me through the door. Home Depot is decent to work for if you have a good management team. The one I worked at years ago.. didn't.

I also hated my life and drank heavily in what little free time I had, spent a ton of money on fast food because I didn't have the energy or time to cook, and did absolutely nothing with my life for the whole 6 month period. I was also being taken advantage of because while it was more money than I'd ever made before, it was nowhere near how much I should have been getting paid running two stores pulling in the money we were. 15 years ago I was doing 75+ hour weeks at around $7/hr for a few years in a row to get by and put some money away. You do what you have to to survive when you have nothing to fall back on. Not everyone gets the luxury of saying "No, I'm just going to not do that because I don't have to" because they have to work to live. poo poo, I didn't even have the luxury of it being retail, this was real manual labor. In the hot sun or the cold depending on the season. WarLocke posted:Yeah, this. Also, it shouldn't be a choice between crazy OT or no job at all. Work your 40 hours, then live your life the rest of the week (because that's the whole reason you work, right?) Like I said, some people don't get that luxury of choice. I don't know anything about Faerunner other than she works for a big box retailer, but knowing the city we both live in her options probably aren't that hot for someone without experience outside retail, so I hope she has other skills or a degree if she decides a single hour of overtime expected of her is her breaking point.
