It's that they don't pay attention. Or even, really, think of us as humans.

To be fair, I heard similar to the bolded above from an employee as a customer; I was at Best Buy a week or two ago and spent five minutes chatting with one of the male sales associates on the floor, then ended up talking to a woman in customer service to actually make my purchase. She asked me who I had been talking with previously, I realized I hadn't caught his name, and described him as accurately as I could and she just gave me this blank look and said "That describes just about all the guys on the floor here"

I don't like "Employee of the Month" stuff in general. I don't know how it's determined who gets the award at my store, but maybe half the people who win are the same three people from framing over and over, so if it's because of customer compliments, that would definitely explain it.

:byodame: "Oh, Geoff helped me with a wonderful $3400 framing job to memorialize my dearly departed parakeet, Mr. Whistler. He's the best employee here!"

The reason I disapprove of them, incidentally, is they set up this weird competition between people, even if you don't give a poo poo. I think they're dumb, and yet I get annoyed that I never get recognized for the hard work I put in every day. Especially when the only actual reward for winning is "get your name on a plaque posted in the breakroom", it's just the most asinine thing. If they want to really make people try to get that, have a reward, and also have clearly laid out rules for how you achieve it. I might put it some extra effort if it could net me a $50 giftcard to East Side Mario's or Red Lobster or Future Shop. Just loving something to strive for. A perfunctory pat on the head like I'm a squirmy little puppy, that's just not worth it.

What you want is a Homer Award. Varying levels, bigger chunks of cash every higher level, I don't remember how much it is anymore, it's been years since I worked at HD, but I think $50 for a bronze, $100 for a silver?

Sam's Club (and Costco as well I imagine) it's in the member agreement that you agree to have your receipt checked and they check every single receipt, bar none. I make polite chit-chat with the people at the door when I shop at Sam's Club and help move things around so they can count my items. Anywhere else "No thanks, have a nice day!" and just keep walking.

When I got hired at Macy's they gave me a handful of coupons that could only be used on "work-appropriate" attire from Macy's. So I got 25% off a couple of black sweaters that I proceeded to wear everywhere for the next two years. Their dress code was strict (all black all the time, dressy shoes for women, ties for men, etc) and my wardrobe still has too much black in it, but at least it wasn't a branded polo shirt.

I'm happier with my current job's dress code though. Company-provided aprons + business casual clothes = employee comfort, brand recognition, and utility. Win-win.

Same as when I worked Macy's, a long time ago (Or maybe it just feels that way, though it is like a decade ago), but with the associate discount and the Macy's Money for card signups and the coupons, I rarely paid much for anything there, uniform or otherwise.

There was and is one thing I will not handle even when working maintenance, and that's human blood (Other than my own. I cut myself, I'm cleaning up the mess once I get cleaned up and bandaged). Today I have interviews at Walmart (cashier, ugh), and both the "home improvement" stores. I hear that both home improvement stores are pretty awesome to work for, and I think it would be neat to learn a lot about home maintenance and stuff. I went through the phone screening for HD, and they offered 9.50 an hour with most weekends off. Hoping this isn't just a ploy to get me through the door.

I was also being taken advantage of because while it was more money than I'd ever made before, it was nowhere near how much I should have been getting paid running two stores pulling in the money we were.

Not worth it at all. Work to live, not the other way around.

15 years ago I was doing 75+ hour weeks at around $7/hr for a few years in a row to get by and put some money away. You do what you have to to survive when you have nothing to fall back on. Not everyone gets the luxury of saying "No, I'm just going to not do that because I don't have to" because they have to work to live. poo poo, I didn't even have the luxury of it being retail, this was real manual labor. Like I said, some people don't get that luxury of choice. I don't know anything about Faerunner other than she works for a big box retailer, but knowing the city we both live in her options probably aren't that hot for someone without experience outside retail, so I hope she has other skills or a degree if she decides a single hour of overtime expected of her is her breaking point.
