I think Atlantis is a fine film. Treasure Planet didn't do anything for me, despite the premise being right up my alley.

The character designs in Atlantis are the best part, largely in part to Mike Mignola.

It's a piece of JUNK!

Atlantis is a hell of a lot better than Treasure Planet. But I have only seen it once, and I'm not sure if it'd hold up on repeat viewings after the novelty of Disney doing something different has worn off. I guess the reason I haven't seen it again is because I'm afraid it won't. I'm sure it's worth at least one viewing, though.

Interestingly, it seemed like both of those movies were going after the Titan AE crowd, even though that movie was apparently a huge bomb.

I can't stand the way Don Bluth and Co. animates humans. They're just so.... wiggly. Everyone in Anastasia had either too much coffee, a nervous tic or both. Wigglewigglewiggle arm flap nod

I haven't seen Titan AE since I was a kid so I don't remember if it's any good or not, but recently I read a funny John K post on 90's tude hair or something of that sort and all I can think about is the main character's silly rear end papery hair from that film. Haha.

It came out around the same time as The Phantom Menace and at least a few critics accurately pointed out that Titan AE was really a much better Star Wars movie than TPM. Neither is as good as the original Star Wars, mind you, but AE more or less works.

I really can't stand the way he does females, anyone who isn't an old hag is usually oversexed (this is really awkward in stuff like Rock-A-Doodle with the chicken girl) and his little girls are just too precocious and bubbly. Although when it comes to creep he'll never hold a candle to Ralph Bakshi, I still can't believe he made an entire movie about a cartoon woman seducing a human.

Really, I think the only Bluth movie that has stood up over time is The Secret of NIMH (whose backgrounds were inspired by Alien, according to the commentary), everything else was pretty mediocre but there was literally nothing else for kids at the time since Disney was still in a slump.

I watched Titan AE for the first time about a year ago, I remember there were a couple of action sequences where the soundtrack was conspicuously absent or too quiet, and the attempts at humor were pretty out-of-place and clashed with the rest of the movie (like Planet Bob).

I really kind of despise Titan AE, despite it trying to be a lot of what I think animated films should be. However, it just has that... rear end quality of a great number of Bluth films. Also, it seemed like all the aliens were characters from The Land Before Time stuck onto human bodies. The animation is very sharp though. Ugh, but the plot! You could drive a tanker through the holes in that ... thing. (All the ships are getting shot down! You need two pieces of a thing to make it work! Let's send both pieces on separate ships, thus astronomically increasing the odds you'll lose something integral!) Furthermore, the color palette--often one of my most hated aspects of Bluth films--was bad as ever. How can the colors always be so obnoxious?

Atlantis is okay. (Although it's funny Claudia Christian got hired to do a Russian voice for that film. Yes, we've all seen and loved Babylon 5, but she's not actually Russian!) I like Treasure Planet a lot better though. A lot of that is a matter of style. Treasure Planet was rounded, dynamic, and very accurate. The way Silver meshed with the CGI arm? Keane's talent is out of this world. But Atlantis had that weird, sharp anime look that just didn't jive with me and always felt flat. Plus they seemed to be REALLY INTO the fact that they were steampunk. Look at how steampunk we are! Hgnnurrfffffff [*humps storyboard*]. Treasure Planet was still "old but new", but I felt it was more artful.

Treasure Planet's visuals were more pleasing to me. They kept a better sense of volume, I think, and some of the framing! Oh god. In every single shot, the composition was amazing. Also, no stupid romance plot! Awesome. I mean, we got Doppler and the captain, but that didn't involve the main character. I do wish they'd kept with the Kit Fisto-lookin' Amelia though. That actually said "alien" to me, not... "cat."

As for Lion King and Kimba, yes. Clearly The Lion King is based off Kimba. The Lion King is better by a huge margin, but that doesn't change that they started working before they got the rights. (Also it's better to compare it to the show, not the movie version, since the show is what the animators and writers grew up with.)

As a child, I mostly tuned out human protagonists, because I thought most of them were 'straight' and boring, were too good for their own good, and had goals and values I couldn't relate to (yet).

So, I liked The Little Mermaid, but mainly because of the bright colours, fun music, fascinating villain, physical humor, and cute animal sidekicks coming out the yin-yang.

We're Back has has Screw-Eyes, which I thought was a cooler concept than villain.

Honestly, the movie kind of sucks, but it's sort of fun. When the dinosaurs are in their "monstrous" forms, they look pretty damned cool. Also there's that parade scene where it kind of looks like the main T-rex is having sex with a giant inflatable Spider-man. Which still makes it more respectful to the character than Spider-man 3.

It's out on DVD for cheap. I have a copy.

Oh, although Yeardley Smith uses like EXACTLY the same Lisa Simpson voice for Cecilia, and it's really obvious and annoying.

I saw this movie when I was six or seven, and though none of it scared me like a lot of other kids, even at that age I was confused by his death. Why do the crows suddenly decide to eat him when they've been obedient the whole movie? It's like the writers were told that the villain HAD to die somehow and they came up with that at the last second.

Oh, and I watched the movie again on Youtube and it's pretty much a cool concept done badly. I'd link to the Nostalgia Critic review that points out a lot of flaws, but SA has an almost unanimous hatred of him.

If the former relies on story and music to be good, what makes it so necessary to be 2D? And seeing how Shrek and Madagascar made Dreamworks WAY more money than anything previously, that's not a studio you should count on going back.

Making fun of childrens cartoons for being dumb is one of the most no-brainer topics on the planet to build a gimmick around, and making a ten-minute video about some crappy cash-in cartoon that the nostalgia critic himself probably cares more about than anybody who actually worked on the thing is painful. Plus in spite of his name he doesn't really do much to combat nostalgia, if his show was more about mocking his viewers and tearing down the people (including myself sometimes, admittedly) who can't seperate nostalgia from objective quality then I'd have a lot more respect for him; too many people have a bad habit of falling into that "I saw it when I was a kid therefore its great" rut.

Bluth movie humans have had that quality since All Dogs go to Heaven.
