Hook it up to the computer and right click > properties the drive to see the used space allocation.

Also it's extremely obvious if it has 3G, a '3G' logo is shown in the top right next to the battery life as long as you are not in a book.

I agree with the new tech sentiments. I got that feeling with the iphone too, and I was blown away by the kindle even though I knew exactly what it was.

This is amazing and is what is usually bundled with the kindle: http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Lighte...W/ref=pd_cp_e_1

You should start with this book (99c) because it's awesome and timeless: http://www.amazon.com/Count-Monte-C...93610428&sr=1-1

Or you can get it here (free): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1184 (not sure if that's unabridged though- which you must read.)

Enjoy.

With non-English books, it's better to splurge and get the version that costs actual money. When you get the free one, you're getting whatever translation they could find, which can often be of poor quality or very dated. For instance, in this case, even if you get the unabriged version of the old translation, it still cut all references to drugs and sex from the story (we're talking cutting entire scenes here).

Basically go wild on the free books in English (although most of them have horrendous formatting), but spend the money to get a decent version of translated books.

In this case the one you want is this one http://www.amazon.com/Count-Monte-C...k/dp/B0049U4ON6

Can you give me an example of scenes that are cut? When the count is on monte cristo with Franz they smoke hashish and Franz gets plastered. So not all drug references were cut out.

If true, you just blew my mind. I thought unabridged meant translated with no edits/cuts. Too bad that version is not available in my country. That is one thing I hate about amazon, is the copyright bullshit making a lot of books unavailable in Australia.

I dunno, here's wikipedia:

"The most common English translation was originally published in 1846 by Chapman and Hall. Most unabridged English editions of the novel, including the Modern Library and Oxford World's Classics editions, use this translation, although Penguin Classics published a new translation by Robin Buss in 1996. Buss' translation updated the language, is more accessible to modern readers, and restored content that was modified in the 1846 translation due to Victorian English social restrictions (for example, references to Eugénie's lesbian traits and behavior) to Dumas' actual publication."

So any free or super cheap version is using the 1846 censored translation. I dunno exactly what all the cuts were, but I can tell you that the Buss translation is fantastic reading.

Eugenie's lesbianism is extremely obvious and referenced in the version I've read verily (and I was pretty taken aback at how blasé it is discussed considering the time period), as is all the drug references. So with that said, this version is a great unabridged version: http://www.amazon.com/Count-Monte-C...93610428&sr=1-1, like I linked to before. You won't be disappointed

You really should do that, that would drive me insane. I have the lighted case and have had no problems with it attached or unattached. Losing bookmarks would suck too, and if I lost my highlights I would rage at Amazon.

On The Count of Monte Cristo, I believe the Feedbooks version is the unabridged 1846 translation. The Robin Buss translation definitely reads better to modern eyes but loses a little of the ye olde worlde booke charm. Minor quibles either way, both are fantastic reads and highly recommended.

The Three Musketeers books also kick all sorts of rear end.

The 1846 English (Victorian) translation is edited because the Victorians were prudes. Also the ye olde english language was added because Victorians liked the Shakespearean melodramatic effect. So I'd definitely go with the Robin Buss translation.

I have a kindle 3 with a light case and it acts and looks like new, and I get no freezing issues. Maybe it's just bad luck and got knocked the wrong way.

I could understand it being fragile without the case though, it's so tiny.

Lascivious Sloth

Yeah I was just thinking my biggest problem wouldn't be books, it'd be power because I use the light so much and it drains the kindle pretty fast. I also have 3G and the only situation I've thought that the 3G would be amazing is if you're deployed in the military.

I'd still choose the kindle over the sony though.

Just thought I'd mention in here a warning that from my experience Gutenburg and feedbooks have some pretty dodgy book conversions. I downloaded Don Quixote from one of those and nearly stopped reading it was so bad, but then I got the amazon version and realised it wasn't the book that was terrible.

Funny, I was just on a flight with my Kindle and was asked to turn it off.. For a second I contimplated saying "It's not actually 'on', it's an e-reader and e-ink doesn't work that way..." But I'd probably get a blank stare and create a confrontation, so I said Okay but kept on reading.

edit: my wifi and 3g were off & I did think about that at the time.

I use the arrow keys to scroll to a word nearly every page when reading the classics with old english words and it's really not that hard. Doesn't really necessitate a touch screen. The only reason I'd like a touch screen is to get rid of the clutter of the keys so it looks more streamlined.

I think eventually the Kindle will be colour e-ink + touchscreen when there is both a demand for it and the technology to do it on the cheap.

I think I've had it around a year or more. Do you think if I talk to amazon they will replace it like all these other success stories in here?

Can I use the touchscreen to click on a word to get the dictionary definition like I could when using the 5-way controller to scroll to a word?

I can't decide between the kindle and kindle touch.. I want to be able to fit it in my front pocket so I figured the kindle would be better (being smaller), but I also want the case, and the case is the same size for the touch and kindle.

This would have been the best kindle. They should give the keyboard version a touch screen and charge $30 more. ( Or whatever cost makes sense.)

Edit: I ment to talk about how you can "hack" the kindle keyboard fairly easily as long as you don't get the Special Offers (SO) version. Most do this in order to put custom screensavers onto it. I'm guessing the Kindle, and Kindle touch will be just as simple as long as you don't get the SO version, but who knows. Whenever you connect to the store using a SO version, it will update the ads and remove any hacks or tweaks you may have installed. So far Amazon does not care what you do with the non SO kindles, nobody has every had their device bricked for putting custom stuff on it, that I'm aware of.

It should also be mentioned that Amazon's customer support for the device is above and beyond what most companies would do. Goons have posted in here about getting cracked screens and broken devices instantly replaced at no additional cost with next day shipping.

I sat on my kindle so I tried to go through their support. I can't call their international number (on the kindle website) from my australian mobile, and using the +61 prefix (minus the 0 from my mobile number) doesn't register for their callback system. I'm sure they have great service but they want me to call them and I can't!

Eurgh, I hate it when they do that in Ebooks. It's one of those things that really ruins a book with a lot of critical notes. If I hadn't of had that option for when I read The Count of Monte Cristo I wouldn't have enjoyed the book half as much.

Apparently they are losing money on every device sold as it costs more to make then they sell it for. But they are gaining market share against apple, and will receive returned revenue from people purchasing kindle books.
