So I was reading this thread, and then wound up babysitting my nephew and we spent the whole morning building lego spaceships out of his collection. ...now I really want to buy myself a whole bunch. It's so much drat fun. it's also so drat expensive. Holy gently caress, a little 1000 piece set is like $40. Now I know why I always got mega blocks when I wanted lego sets growing up.

Pehther posted:I really, really believe you added an extra '0' there. I've been hoping to get some money to start buying Lego again (it's been around 20 years) but I find I get intimidated by the $0.10 per brick average. I see the 20 dollar sets I think would be fun...but then my eyes wander up to that Slave I and I realize I can't afford that yet. If you buy the giant tubs of bricks that aren't meant to build anything in particular, it's about $40/1000 bricks. It's 29.99 for a 700 piece tub from TRU. The licensed sets are hella expensive though. I think I'm gonna go stop by TRU though, and drop $40 of my paycheck, since my 450 piece tub that I got for when my nephew comes over isn't really enough to satiate me.

$30 later, I manged to escape with not one, but two lego sets! The Creator 3-1 sets, which are actually really awesome. I've spent the night while waiting for dinner to cook making a totally sweet sports car and a totally sweet airplane...and joining them together to make it a totally sweet flying car. ...I have a feeling I'm going to be devoting 15-20 of every paycheck to lego sets now, because drat, I forgot how totally awesome it is to not only build, but play with lego. It's like...impossible to resist playing with the things you build.

Phy posted:It's just not Lego until you're at risk of aspirating a 1x1 plate I gave my nephew the free minifig I got with the purchase of my two lego sets at TRU...and watched as he very nearly swallowed it's head taking it back apart to play with it and put it back together again. drat near gave me a heart attack. yeah, that's what nails are for. I need to show that kid the alligator launching ladder...only he'd probably find a way to combine his love of lego and hotwheels to turn it into a hot-wheels launching ladder. Edit: I just cancled my gym membership, so that I can afford the Taj Mahal three months sooner. This is an expensive, expensive hobby. \/\/Jarts are awesome, but my sister won't let me give our old set to my nephew.

So how do you guys learn how to design stuff? I've been messing around with LDD, and well-I suck at figuring things out. It sucks, cause when I was little, I used to be hella good at designing all kinds of poo poo, like I'd just sit down with my tub of legos, or knex or whatever, and after about an hour, I'd have all sorts of awesome poo poo, but now, I sit down and I'll tinker, but...it doesn't come out the same. How do I get that little kid creativity back? And I really want to reopen my credit card...just to get that goddamn taj mahal. That thing is so drat gorgeous. Half my nephew's christmas list is Lego, and I keep waiting for TRU to do the buy-one-get-one on Lego, so that I can get him xmas gifts and get myself xmas gifts to myself. I'll get myself the taj mahal and him the death star. AA is for Quitters fucked around with this message at Oct 30, 2010 around 04:36 |

So there are some real lego assholes at my local TRU. They had like 4-5 of the "lego star wars" books that come with 2 minifigs and 250pc to build a few different things, and it's a whole bunch of info on lego star wars. And it was the perfect gift for my nephew. But no, someone had gone through and opened all of them to yank the minifigs out. So he's getting a lego motorcycle and a lego racecar instead. And Aunt J got herself the lego x-wing. I don't even really *like* star wars, but the x-wing is...an x-wing! I was just pissed that the pharoh's quest stuff wasn't included on the coupon, that little biplane is pretty loving sweet.

So I spent the past two hours working on the X-wing. Only to realize i had horribly misprinted directions. I figured the one wing being doubled up was an accident. (rather than doing the mirrored wings in the directions, it told me to build the same wing twice). Then the directions skipped from page 32 to page 38, and then repeated 38-42 twice. Ooops. Luckily the correct instructions are online, but drat, this is the biggest pain in the rear end set I've ever built. It's one of the coolest sets I've ever built, but it's a drat pain.
