Do you really want 10 (more?) silver-armor Power Miners and orange Rock Monsters, plus that giant blue drill? The transblue half-dome is a nice piece, and you've got some technic arms in blue, and 4 sets of click joints and the silver hose...nothing all that special about the set, IMO.

The Shuttle, though, is a great set. The dark orange tank pieces, a whole bunch of 4x2x4 white half cylinders

Get the Shuttle and two Mechs. You can swing another $20.

On my end, I picked up some Clearance sets today. Got Trash Compactor Escape at Target for $25 (mostly got it for the various struts and stanchions), the Arc-170 for $29 and the latest Fire Station for $38 at Fred Meyer.

Does it need to be entirely clear and smooth? You could make it with 1x2 clear bricks and 1x1 round bricks. The 1x2 clears are pretty easy to get (they make regular appearances in store PABs), but the 1x1 round clears are uncommon (I apparently have exactly one). Plates or bricks? You could certainly get enough plates in a $15 PAB cup to make your card, maybe two cups if they're bricks. The prices through LDD and their online PAB are outrageous. It wouldn't hurt to call the Lego Store to see what they have to see if the drive's worthwhile.

Seems to me every other BOGO at TRU includes Star Wars. They usually limit the BOGO stuff to lines that haven't had a refresh--Ninjago and Harry Potter both recently got some new sets (like the bus from HP and the two new dragon sets from Ninjago), so they're excluded, but Alien Conquest and PotC aren't. I'm pretty sure both of them were excluded from the last BOGO.

I went today hoping to find S5, but they had none, of course. Still no reported sightings in the US, from what I gather. After a lot of mental arguments, I walked out with a pair of Space Centres. If Ninjago wasn't excluded, I probably would've gotten the new Fire and Lightning dragon sets, even though they're both pretty pricey.

I've had one good Craigslist buy (a bunch of late 80s/90s-era space sets), and a couple more attempts that didn't go anywhere because the sellers never replied.

A few additions have been from friends and family--they've gotten wind of my rediscovered interest in Lego and have given me the collections their now-grown kids had. It's generally not much, about the same size as the collection I had as a kid, which was only a couple thousand pieces. It's kind of ridiculous that now I can easily walk out of Toys R Us with more pieces than I ever had as a kid.

Now most of what I expand the collection with is just buying retail sets. I build a handful of them--the Pet Store and other modular buildings are all displayed on a shelf, as are the flagship sets from the various space lines. A few I've assembled, and then disassembled, like the Alien Conquest line (the mobile HQ stays assembled!). Since my display space is quite limited, I just can't have too many assembled sets around. A lot of the sets I buy just go straight into boxes. Today, I filled up a Space Centre box and the Toy Story Trash Compactor Escape with loose pieces from disassembled sets and just-purchased stuff. They'll go into my sort bin once I find one, along with a big shopping bag I have filled with even more loose pieces.
I do try to contain my "Buy new sets for the pieces" shopping to sales, but I've still spent waaaay too much money the past few years on Lego.

I need like a solid month off work and broken internet to get this poo poo sorted. And more space.

I'm so loving pissed that they didn't have Star Wars Lego when I was a kid.

The largest sets I got as a kid were Ice Station Odyssey, Sonar Transmitting Cruiser, and the 1990 Space Shuttle: 337, 345, and 392 pieces respectively. I believe all three were Christmas gifts from my aunt. I've bought myself sets that I would have wistfully circled in the Lego catalogs and given to my mom as a kid. Hell, now I have multiples of some of those very sets, like the Mega Core Magnetizer.

In general, sets these days are larger. Lines generally range from 15 pieces for the impulse sets to 1100 for the biggest sets. Ice Planet ranged from 18 to 412, Blacktron from 29 to 562, or 19 to 779 for '79-'86 Castle. The themes didn't get their first 1000+ piece set until '91 (ignoring the USS Constitution, which was over 1000 parts in '79, but wasn't part of a theme, and the sets intended for education).

Dear AFOL goons,

I have decided to go to brick con in Seattle this year. (long story short... I need something to look forward to and something to aim for, and I always said i'd attend a lego convention while in the US)

So, a couple of questions for you...
Firstly, throw some MOC ideas my way so I can try to create something awesome to take with me and show. I'm thinking small-ish, no bigger than 32x32. (Most of my collection is in the UK, although i'm prepared to buy)

Keep in mind the themes for BrickCon this year.
http://afol.brickcon.org/content/br...borative-builds
Something microscale sounds like it'd be good.

quote:

Secondly, I've never been to any conventions before, is it wise to do this on my own our should I find a friend to join me? (Obviously, i'd like to, but i'm wondering quite how important it would be)

Honestly, there's not a lot to do compared to other conventions like PAX or Comic-con. There's a lot of socializing with the other AFOLs. The schedule for this year's isn't completely filled in yet.

quote:

Thirdly, how would I best transport an MOC from Orlando to Seattle?

Depends on the MOC. They mention in the FAQ that you can actually ship it to BrickCon if it's too big or fragile for an airline. If you're only making a 32x32 microscale building or something, it'd probably pack for a plane pretty well. If you go crazy and make a SHIP, you'd probably want to either drive or ship it.

quote:

And last, what should I actually expect when there!?

Lots and lots of awesome MOCs, some fun games & competitions, drafts, some sellers (like BrickArms or minifig collectors, with usually overpriced vintage sets and one big seller that sells the current assortment and usually has some bulk bins and minifig assembly stations; Lego itself wasn't there last year), and the Lego Store Trip, where everyone makes a pilgrimage to the Lego Store after-hours and we take turns buying stuff for 50% off.
During the Public Exhibition hours, it's fun watching the kids and parents alike gape at the MOCs.

quote:

Any tips on places to stay, eat, other things to see while there will be greatly appreciated. I've never been anywhere other than FL in America, yet.

Thanks in advance!

The convention is in Seattle Center, so it's a ways from downtown, but there are several restaurants in the area, and the Science Center (mostly for kids, but can still be fun for adults), Space Needle, and a real IMAX Theater are right there. There are several hotels within a few blocks. I don't live in Seattle proper and only go up there occasionally, so I'm not really familiar with it.

It seems like Lego Kidsfests are still going to do them for the AFOLs who participate, though, because they have on-site stores and don't want to bring the leftovers back with them after the event is over.

I thought it was only the local Lego store that provided the discounted/damaged sets. Though, looking back, that was a lot of sets for just the Bellevue location...

I looked closer at the AFOL FAQ on the BrickCon page, though:

Hard to say, if you know absolutely nothing about it. Especially if you can't be sure there are no clone brands in it. The $10/pound 'going rate' seems high for something sight-unseen.
If you're at a specialty store and can actually pick your pound of Lego out of the bin, or it's a well-sorted AFOL collection, probably $15/pound. If you're buying a bulk lot and know it's from mostly old sets (1980s, early 90s), $12-15. A bulk lot that has a suspicious amount of plain bricks (like they'd added a bunch for filler), probably no more than $5.
I see a lot of bulk lots offered for $4-10/pound on Craigslist; the $10/pound ones seem to stick around longer and get reposted.

It's nice because you can know exactly what pieces you have, but it's horrible because that means you have to enter them in. The Puyallup TRU has two boxes on the shelf (well, a box and a half, after I was done). I stood there like a nerd for an hour feeling every damned one. I got 32, two complete sets (hopefully! Haven't opened them yet). They were marked $3.49, but rang up $2.99, so that was nice.
Cashier said I was the first person to get any today. They just got 'em off the truck this morning.

There were several easy feels, particularly the Egyptian Queen and the Detective if you could find the damned magnifying glass. I'll edit once I get them all opened.

Also, I went to Borders to see if they had any S4 left, but the bucket they had them in was nowhere to be seen. All the rest of the Lego was at 40% off, after their ~20% rear end in a top hat markup. Almost got Whitecap Bay, but it was marked up to $94 or so, so after the 40%, it was $23 off MSRP, less than 30%. I can wait for a better deal.

Here's some feeling tips, while I'm opening:

Clown: Feel for the round pie, and use your fingernail to check for a bumpy edge. Also, the hat has an even brim all the way around.
Godzilla: Feel for the tail, which is hard plastic, about 3cm long, and curved with a 90 degree neck piece. Tail also has large triangle spikes on the inner curve.
Graduate: Feel for squares. The diploma is a 2x2 tile and the cap is also square, slightly smaller than the tile.
Royal Guard: The hat. It's extremely obvious. Large, cylindrical and bumpy.
Gladiator: The helmet. It's very large and uniquely shaped. Feel for a helmet opening opposite a large sharp crest and three distinct curved ridges.
Egyptian Queen: The skirt, of course.
Dwarf Warrior: He has two large, bulky parts--the winged helmet and the hair/beard piece. It can be tough to separate out all the pieces to get a good feel; try to find the axe handle, which is unique in S5. The lumberjack's axe is longer and has an axehead attached. Also, the shield is small and round, and does not have a stud on it, unlike the Gladiator's shield.
Snowboarder: The snowboard curves up at both ends. The hat has no real brim and is smooth.
Lumberjack: The axe and hat. The axe is all one piece and it's easy to feel. The hat is also the only baseball cap, so feel for the bill.
Cavewoman: The only figure with squishy hair. Also, the club is distinctive: an indistinct lump with a stick on one end. The bone might also make it a quick find if it's at an edge.
Boxer: This one was tough for me. Feel for a torso, but with giant hands. The boxing gloves aren't held, they're actual hand replacements. Since it can be hard to tell if the hands are too big, the padded helmet feels like a helmet with two curved bits leading to an open front.
Gangster: Another tough one for me. I found him via the hat--a wide, even brim. The violin case is closed, but the shape can make it tough to distinguish it with the workout girl's boombox. There's also the pistol if it's at an edge.
Detective: The magnifying glass is very distinctive; a round raised rim with a lower lens. Also, the hat has bills in front and back, so you can distinguish it between the other hats.
Ice Fisher: The pole is a dead giveaway, but if it's wrapped up by the insert, the hood works. Feel for a round helmet with two holes separated by a solid chinstrap (whereas the boxer's openings aren't separated). One of the helmet's openings is also bumpy to a fingernail.
Zookeeper: Tough one for me. The banana's a giveaway if it's not wrapped in the insert, but the monkey was just too indistinct for me to tell what it really was. I guess feel for a lumpy mass like the cavewoman's club, but without the stick at one end.

So, here's my take:
Godzilla: 2
Boxer: 3
Zookeeper: 2
Gangster: 2
Ice Fisher: 2
Cavewoman: 3
Graduate: 2
Royal Guard: 2
Snowboarder: 2
Clown: 2
Gladiator: 2
Detective: 2
Lumberjack: 2
Dwarf Warrior: 2
Egyptian Queen: 2
Aerobics Girl: 0

I have no idea how I didn't get any Aerobics Girls. I must've confused the boomboxes for the gangster's violin cases and lost proper count. I specifically remember skipping the large, rather obvious 'farrah hair' in two packages because I thought I already had two I had identified via the boombox.
Closest I've ever come to two complete sets in one go after the barcodes went away, though!
I'll finish my double set once they show up at Fred Meyer. And maybe get a couple more Gladiators, too, since they're awesome.

Well, sort of. There's a pattern of dots on the bottom of the back of the package. They're a slightly different texture and you have to get the light right to see them, and that's assuming they're well-defined or even there. If you have identical lot numbers (which are actually printed), then the dot patterns should be identical across that particular minifig. Bag-feel is much more reliable. The Gladiator's helmet is easy because it's so big and it has several well-defined ridges: the crest, the visor, the chin, and the nape of the neck.

Is there a system where you can generally look up prices and price comparisons by part and such? For example, let's say I want to find a fantasy set with the best price per part ratio released between 2009 and 2011, or the cheapest Star Wars set with over 300 parts. Is there somewhere I can do that? I know brickset has this information, but there doesn't seem to be a mechanism to look it up.

Peeron has some of that functionality:
http://peeron.com/inv/reports

But some of it's broken by incomplete data (the Imperial Shuttle wasn't $0.00, after all), and it can't split it up by theme or year or anything.
It'd be neat if Peeron opened up their database and let people make custom reports for it, though.

For your first example, though, I'm pretty sure Medieval Market Village has the best price:part ratio in the Castle line, and one of the best overall ratios excluding parts buckets.

On another note, why do I like the Ninjago dragons so much? Their construction isn't very inspired, and they don't look that great in person, but I can't help but like them. So much so that I bought two Fire Dragons, two Lightning Dragons, and a second Ice Dragon with TRU's BOGO50%.
loving hell, I wasn't going to buy anything this month.

My wife has a christmas village that she has been building over the past few years, I convinced her that we should switch it to the lego christmas village, and she agreed. What sets have come out previously, and where can I buy them (I am in Canada).

Thanks

Lego's released the Winter Village Toy Shop, Winter Village Bakery, and will soon be releasing the Winter Village Post Office. The City Advent Calendars from the past few years have also had some winter accessories.
The Toy Shop may be discontinued, perhaps after this winter season, since sets usually don't stay in production all that long.

You can also just buy normal sets, like the various Creator Houses or even the Modular Buildings and winter-ize them, although they're not quite scaled the same way the Winter Villlage sets are.

I assumed you could get them from Amazon, but amazon.ca doesn't seem to have any, but I'm sure there are plenty of other ways to get them in Canada.

And of course, there's always MOCing! Hit Craigslist up, buy a lot for $10/pound or less, and go crazy building your own buildings from scratch.

They also put out a "Holiday Train" with a Christmas theme in 2006. Its a bit costly.

Huh, didn't know about that one. It's about half that price on bricklink, though.

The tripod is the preferred set of Alien Conquest. Honestly the usual ratio is 10 cents per piece, and all of the AC sets are a bit overpriced by that metric. But they're also really nice sets. The mothership also has motorized movement and a noise-making brick so you're probably paying a bit more for those more "toy"-like features. If you want to spend a lot of money the big blue Earth Defense truck would be the way to go.

Just to clarify, the Mothership does not have any motorized movement. All it has is the sound brick, which triggers when you rotate outer ring.

I disassembled mine, largely because it was so drat large. I kept the Earth Defense HQ together, since it looks badass. I don't think Lego's ever designed a tougher-looking vehicle.

My wife is finally ordering the parts for the concrete truck she designed. Because she already has the horribly expensive parts it looks like it's only going to cost her a few hundred.

Her next project, unfortunately, is going to be one of those self assembling tower cranes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB91Sm-kGJ8

It's probably going to be scaled to match the 8053 mobile technic crane.

I'm already afraid of just how much this is going to cost and how much space we're going to need to display it.

Didn't you post pictures of the concrete pumper in LDD form earlier? Hard to imagine how big a truck would be if it's still going to cost you a few hundred after you already have the expensive parts.

Sounds like she's moving from big MOC to SHIP. Like one of those 6' behemoth starships that have 30,000 parts. Except more expensive, since I'm not sure Technic has ever been in a PAB so you couldn't just pack a $150 box with 3000 liftarms or something.

I've been looking at buying maybe a hundred 4x1s to do the streets with, but I don't think I really care enough. That being said I'd hate to bring my crappy poorly maintained roads to a Lego con down the road and have everything not jive.

Your segments can be on the wrong side of the tracks! Interspersing studs in with tiles would make for some great potholes. Clearly, the recession should be affecting Micropolis!
