Damn, this is good coffee.
Just made an impulse buy yesterday that I absolutely do not regret.

Sorry for the bad pictures, but my phone isn't really cooperating with me at the moment.

I decided to mix things up since I had a bunch of minifigures lying around my desk. Time for a pirate ship battle featuring characters spanning multiple centuries!

Jack Sparrow and Blackbeard battle it out at the ship's wheel while a viking and wolfman confront each other on the deck.

Frankenstein chases a cook.

Somehow, at the front of the ship, a cyborg confronts an alien.

Zombies chase "Angelica" (I haven't seen the movies) up the mast while a Roman soldier battles another zombie.

Owning a LEGO pirate ship has been a dream of mine since I was a kid (always wanted Black Seas Barracuda or Skull's Eye Schooner as a child), and I'm really happy with my purchase.

They're available for pre-order on Toys R Us' website for $2.99 with a buy one, get one 50% off deal:

Edit: Turns out you can buy as many as you like but you only get one half-off :( not to mention the cost of shipping.

Was curious what other goons thoughts were about the Space Invader line?

I have the Space Invader tripod set and really like it, it's pretty cool. It's nice to have a set that isn't a licensed property.

I'm making my girlfriend's one-year anniversary card in LEGO Digital Designer...gently caress the prices on there are expensive! Wouldn't it just be cheaper to go my local LEGO store and buy the pieces there? I'm trying to find a "catalog" feature in the software to tell me how much of each piece I have...

Going to the Lego Store would be a tossup. Chances are they wouldn't have most of the parts you'd need, let alone in the right colors.
AFAIK, LDD doesn't have any sort of piece breakdown, so your best bet would be to catalog them yourself and find a seller on brinklink that has 'em all.

I figured as much. To be fair, it's a very basic card, almost all simple 1 by X or 2 by X pieces, so chances are it would in fact be at the Lego store. Still curious as to the prices, cause god drat I'm at about $65 right now and it's not even a big card.

Plates or bricks? You could certainly get enough plates in a $15 PAB cup to make your card, maybe two cups if they're bricks. The prices through LDD and their online PAB are outrageous. It wouldn't hurt to call the Lego Store to see what they have to see if the drive's worthwhile.

Bricks currently, though now that I think of it, the same primary effect (essentially a three dimension heart popping out of the plane) could be accomplished with plates instead of bricks. In any case, I'm certain that buying at the store would be cheaper, and it's only a 10 minute drive away anyway.

Does anyone know of a site where you could catalog full Lego sets that you own, then the site itself would keep track of each individual piece that you own, and then present you with MOCs (uploaded by site members) that you could potentially create using said pieces? I think it's a potentially interesting idea.

I kind of don't understand why people are getting mad at Lego for wanting to tap into a 'new' group of customers. They obviously want to appeal to those parents who already only buy 'girly' toys for their daughters, and/or hopefully appeal to girls that only enjoy girly toys. I agree there aren't enough female minifigs in normal sets, but at the same time I think that there are already going to be a lot of women out there that buy the other themes because they already enjoy Lego.

Is Lego pandering to gender stereotypes? Or are they sneaking a great toy into the hands of girls that would otherwise never touch Lego because of those stereotypes? I guess it's up to the individual to decide.

They're definitely pandering. There shouldn't be a reason that girls prefer "girly" sets like the Friends sets. What you can argue is whether Lego (and other companies) is at fault, at least partially, for something like this. It's a bit of a chicken and egg problem, IMO.

You could easily get the 1989 version used for 120$ + shipping. Considering the MSRP back in '89 was 110$ and the 2002 version sells for 180$ it's not that bad of a deal.

You could also probably build it piecemeal for pretty cheap. You'd probably have to spend 40$ on specialized parts, but if you have the minfigs to man it you're good to go. It's not a complex build and you can get the instructions online.

Hmm, this is tempting. I wonder why I expected all the sets to be $300+. $120 for a childhood dream is pennies IMO. Is there a reason the 2002 version is more expensive? Just that the bricks are less aged, I'm guessing...

When you say building piecemeal, do you mean buying pieces off of Bricklink itself?

Works out for everyone and not a big deal. It's only a problem when the clerk digs in their heels about the price. Clerks don't like to go against the what the till says, while managers prefer to just get you out of there in questionable situations.

Except what usually happens is people flip out and start acting like entitled children over a pricing error. So no, clerks digging their heels in about price is not a problem.
