Welcome to GBS! For a safe, happy posting experience, simply follow these

Ask yourself: "Is my post or reply actually interesting, funny, or contributing to the discussion at hand?" If not, don't post it.

New threads need to be more than:
  • A Youtube video
  • A copy and pasted news story that lacks your own decent personal summary or opinion
  • A crappy MSPaint or half assed Photoshop
  • A lame e-mail forward or blog topic
  • An uninspired Choose Your Own Adventure
  • A generic complaint, a tedious retelling of the minutiae of some episode from your dull life, or a question that can be answered with a yes/no or a discussion-less list. ("Do you like ice cream?" "What are your favorite ice creams?")
Also try to avoid vague or misleading thread titles. When I click on a thread called "Well ain't that a box of dicks" and it isn't about a box of dicks, I am sad.

If you post a thread, explain why you think it's an interesting & original topic, either literally or through the thread content itself. If you can't put in some time and effort, please don't post the thread.

Replies require effort as well. Don't regurgitate stupid catchphrases or memes, or preface your posts with "I'm not very good at this, but...", or anything of the sort. Stop typing like a retard: proper punctuation, spelling and grammar are a requirement.

A NOTE ABOUT PUNS:

You could not restrain yourselves. You could not stick to only posting a pun if it was really funny. You did not stop yourselves once the puns started flowing into a thread; your failure to hold back destroyed potentially good or interesting threads with a torrential downpour of unfunny, uncreative puns.

Now the puns must be stopped.

If you post a pun, you should be dead certain that it is downright hilarious and not immediately obvious. Posters of unfunny or predictable puns will be crushed.

For everyone else: if you see an offending pun, report it so that we may destroy the criminal who posted it.

We will purge this evil from the forums and allow some balance to return to the forests and plains of the GBS wilderness.

Some topics are very popular, and as a result many (large, angry) threads are posted about them. Police fuckups, the latest statements or actions of reviled public figures, religious crazies doing crazy things, and so forth. Certainly these things can be discussed, but please do consider whether or not a particular item is really so noteworthy that it is worth posting a whole new thread [read: risking a 400-page flamefest]. Perhaps there is already a thread on a similar topic, or maybe deeper discussion is warranted and an appropriate thread should be posted in D&D? We don't want to make hard and fast rules about what can be discussed in GBS, so you'll just have to use your best judgement on this -- we simply ask that you put in a little thought first.

Threadshitting doesn't contribute anything, and it sabotages the opportunity for other posters to make a bad thread good again. Trolling doesn't help either -- this includes personal attacks, intentionally lovely arguments, spiteful fakeposting, and generally acting like an unfunny shithead. Remember: just because someone is posting like a complete idiot doesn't mean you can just call them a stupid rear end in a top hat - you need to take the time and intelligently or humorously point out why/how they are a stupid rear end in a top hat.

Dismissing an argument or poster as "GBS" or referring to some "GBS hivemind" will probably get you probated or banned.

This applies even to threads that are intentionally bad or incredibly terrible: you can be banned if you threadshit or troll in them. Posting an intentionally bad thread will likely earn a ban as well, for trolling the users of General Bullshit. This includes elaborate unfunny fakeposts, BYOB poo poo, and other terrible nonsense.

Again, if you cannot significantly contribute to a thread, do not post.

With that said: if you are incredibly funny, you can probably get away with just about anything. Something Awful is a forum on a comedy website, and being mean can be a great way of producing comedy. Just remember that the people in charge of determining the amount of comedy in your antagonistic wordplay are notoriously unfunny moderators, and it's entirely up to their judgment. If you aren't sure, don't post it.

Applies to charitable causes, your lovely band or album, an item you or your company is trying to sell or raise awareness for, some dumb "we need more votes" contest, or anything else you wish for the SA community to assist you with. If you honestly think that you have something mind-blowingly [funny / interesting / engaging / profitable / otherwise awesome] in which thousands of people will genuinely have an interest, ask a General Bullshit moderator about it first.

Just to make this clear, so your hopes aren't crushed: it is unlikely that a request will get approval.

Acting like a creep, bigot, or self-righteous rear end in a top hat is especially frowned upon and will almost certainly result in a banned account. If you've got some horrible opinion about a culture, race, gender, sexual orientation or individual, please keep it to yourself and do not post on these forums.

If you choose to act creepy, "goony", or any of the aforementioned no-nos for the sake of irony, you do so at your own risk. Irony and intent can be hard to spot in the volumes of stupidity we sometimes witness, and if a mod misjudges the intent of your post.... tough. If you're not prepared to take the risk then just don't do it.

Where should I host images?
Find an image host that's reliable, easy to use, and doesn't stop working after it starts using too much bandwidth. Photobucket is bad. Tinypic, Imgur, and maybe Waffleimages (if it's accepting uploads at that moment) are better choices. Imageshack may not work on these forums.

I lost my password/don't have access to my email/hosed up my account. Can you help?
You should use this account recovery tool. If that doesn't work, email support or an admin.

Can you put me on probation for a while? I am too weak-willed to avoid the forums, but I have to focus on something!
You will probably just be banned.

Can I post an "Anonymous Confessional" thread?

I got put on on probation for being a dick, now I am sorry, can you fix it?
No.

Just remember that you are part of these forums, and as with many things, you can only expect to get what you give. If you try to be a funny, creative, and otherwise constructive member of the community, you're bringing up the quality of the place by that much, and everyone benefits.

Do you have cancer?
If so, and if you make a bad post in GBS, and if I handle your report, you'll be getting a minimum of a week's probation. So stop posting badly.

BY ORDER OF THE ZOG:

No more threads about Israeli/Palestinian politics. They're pretty much the worst poo poo about these forums concentrated into one ball of poo poo that are frankly embarrassing to read.

The level of discussion in posts covering any kind of polarising issue in GBS has degraded to the point that many of them end up getting locked or gassed. This is a shame as it's usually the result of a couple of lovely posters and plenty of people (myself included) actually enjoy discussing these kind of things in GBS. To try and fix this we're going to make more of an effort to weed out the worst posters and repeat offenders and hopefully improve the quality of the threads as a result.

The following guidelines are all already covered by the GBS rules and most fall under "Again, if you cannot significantly contribute to a thread, do not post.".

PLEASE STOP
  • Trying to pass off a stream of flippant low-effort leading questions and glib dismissals of an opposing point of view as a contribution. It isn't. If your contribution to a thread resembles this you are the biggest reason these threads end up turning to poo poo and you are probably going to get banned.

  • Posting just to tell everyone what an rear end in a top hat you are. No one cares how much you don't care.

  • Posting just to tell everyone that it's not worth posting because everyone in GBS is a bleeding heart hippie or gun-toting racist or whatever groupthink is being attributed to GBS today. This is already probatable, so consider it more probatable.

  • Feigning ignorance of hyperbole. Not everything everyone says needs to be taken literally. It's annoying. Stop it.
For all of the above contribution is king. If you're actually making some kind legitimate contribution to the thread we're more likely to be lenient with regards to how these guidelines are enforced. If you just swoop in to make a single lovely post and mark your territory you my end up regreting it.

And finally...
  • Please stop reposting local news stories or blog posts just because they happen to be about race or censorship or homophobia or any other hot button topic if you don't have any actual insight about or something significant to say about what you're posting. This is already covered under "GBS is not an RSS". For the record "I'm outraged. What do you think?" doesn't cut it. Even worse "I don't really care about this but thought GBS might".

For those still not getting the message: Stop posting stuff you read on a news feed that you felt was vaguely interesting.... but don't really have much of an opinion on. Make the effort to let us know why you feel strongly enough about the issue to make a post about it. Things along the line of "here's something someone said they think is racist/sexist/whatever but I don't think it's a big deal" will get you probated. If you think something is worth discussing, discuss it. Don't just post it in the hope that someone else might.

Your username/avatar/title is tangentially related to your post content/this thread/something I just thought of, I'd better make sure everybody knows how smart I am and point this out!
Posts that are nothing but "Awesome post/username combo!" or anything thereabouts are getting a week probation. Nobody cares.

I'd just like to remind everyone that "Hey, someone do this idea that I can't be bothered to do myself" posts in photoshop threads are lame, and you shouldn't make them.

A couple things to keep in mind when making reports:

1. You need to give a reason. Actually, you need to give a good reason.

2. Disagreeing with you on a political or social issue is not against the rules.

Hello rules fans.

Please stop using embedded youtube videos as de facto image macros. We've had some top scientists working on it and it turns out they're actually even more annoying. In other words do not do this or this.

If you are a fan of arguing on the internet please post more than just a video if you are trying to make a point. If you do not you exclude those not currently able to view, or more likely listen, to videos from the discussion and that's just rude. You can use a video to back-up a point you're trying to make or as an example or whatever. In other words do this but not this. Of course this doesn't apply to threads that are actually about videos and posting videos.

Thanks you for your time.
