Hanukkah came early this year.

Welcome to D&D! We've put together these rules and helpful posing tips to help you post in D&D and to improve your Forum Experience(tm).

Things that will get you put on probation and/or banned:

Do not whine about the debatability of a thread topic.

No cheerleading. No Parting shots. The easiest way to define cheerleading I suppose is acting like you're part of a team, cheering on your teammate or egging on the opponent. This also applies to comments along the lines of “oh, don’t bother arguing with [x], they’re crazy” and the like. It's a judgment call so if there are any questions, feel free to contact one of the mods.

Do not close your threads. It is not YOUR thread and you can't end the debate unilaterally just because you want to.

No low-content or no-content posts. Posts that add nothing to the thread will be probated. Humor is content, horrible attempts at humor probably aren't.

Report posts, don't derail threads, and don't play mod. If you are confused about a rule, pm, IM, or email one of the mods. Do not try to start a discussion about the rules in the middle of a forum thread

Racism: Racist or discriminatory posts will get you banned. Trying to abuse this rule to get other people banned may not go well for you.

Tone: D&D has no requirement you treat all posts and viewpoints as equal, or even legitimate, but you are expected to keep a civil tone to maintain the ability to debate even extremely contentious topics. Gratutitous flaming and the like will land you on probation. Posts that are nothing but gratuitous flaming will land you on probation for a while.

Catch-all: lovely posts are always against the rules, even if they ever-so-carefully avoid breaking an explicit rule. Don't even try to rules-lawyer. If you find yourself typing "but what rule, exactly, did I violate", it's this one. You violated this one. Close the PM/IM immediately, without sending it.

Things that will get your thread gassed:

i. Do not post threads or make posts for the sole purpose of flaming one country, group, side or position.

ii. Don't try to write your own rules for a thread.

iii. Don't start a thread that someone has to watch a youtube movie or the like to understand: nobody will watch it. Either transcribe it or find some other text-based substitute.

iv. Humor threads and other politics/philosophy based threads are fine even if they're not really for 'debating' or 'discussing'.

How to be a good D&D poster:
These are just a few things that help you get your point across well. Don't loving report people for violating these.

i. Do not post full articles unless you are the person that started the thread, unless they’re fairly short. Post the relevant quotes and a link as to not clutter up the thread.

ii. Always include a source for an article. If you're making some unusual or controverisal claim, try to find a source for it. Don't post a claim against somebody and walk away thinking that's enough - if you are challenged, back it up.

iii. Read the thread. If it shows that you just skipped to the end and jumped in, you're going to be sitting out.

iv. Don't be an idiot, or a pendantic idiot.

For references, this is the old rules thread.

Hanukkah came early this year.

We'll be adding/changing/clarifying stuff based on the discussion thread we had where we asked for suggestions/comments sometime in the next few days. We may have a second round of discussion, but for now we are going to implement the things that most people were in agreement upon. Technically, we've already implemented them for the most part, but we'll lay them out here in a formal fashion.

Also, if you have a desire to discuss the forums cancer and RFA stuff, D&D is not the place. We had nothing to do with it, we had and have no control over it - some of you can't seem to get it through your heads that it affected multiple sub-forums of a certain type. If you want to complain about cancer/RFA, take your chances in QCS, but carefully read the QCS sticky.

New rules!

Well they might be new rules or they might be a horrible test gone wrong but for now these are new rules! The following rules are now in effect:

1. Closing arguments 24h thread closure notification. - Based off of the discussion thread a lot of people feel that threads just get too big and too far down the rabbit hole for new posters to get involved. Inevitably the longer threads end up with a few people who really care about it who've been arguing for 20 pages, or a bunch of posters rehashing things that have already been said. Both of these things really show us that some threads are done and need to be closed, maybe just so a clean restart can be had but usually because there's just nothing more to be said right now. We're going to start calling for closing arguments so people can put their last word on the subject before we close the thread.

2. Focused threads on specific subjects. - We do feel that sometimes arguments get so focused on the big picture that the smaller details can't be discussed effectively. We are now going to enforce people’s ability to focus threads on one aspect of a greater topic, but with one very important catch. We recognize that some people will use this as a mechanism to focus the debate so narrowly that only their argument makes sense and that's no fun for anybody. So to cut down on this D&D mods must approve your request to focus the thread in a certain way. To do this PM one of us or shoot us an email and we'll evaluate your request.

Change as of 15 September 2010 - You no longer have to ask for prior permission to focus a thread. Just do it and if your thread is terrible we'll gas it.

3. Articles without comment for OP's (news only). - Something happens, you might not have a comment but the topic really should be discussed. For now we'll try out allowing OP's for pure news/event threads to be article only just to get things started. This constitutes a departure from the old GBS is for news D&D is for debate mentality. Do remember you are in D&D however, don't post like a buffoon.

4. Coming down really hard on effort being met with no effort. - Your position is challenged and you type up a big detailed analysis with proper cites and a really creative way of breaking down why you think a certain position and why it's the better way of looking at a problem. Some idiot just quotes it, writes a two line mischaracterization of what you said, then proceeds to lead the thread into a different direction while basically ignoring all the work you did. That's not right and we're going to begin enforcing this. If somebody is routinely matching effort with garbage then this is an issue and would like to help. Report posters that routinely do this and pm the mods. We'll likely contact you to get more information because to properly prove that it's a habit we're going to need you to do your homework.

These aren't all the changes that will be made, just the first batch. We'll see how these go and open up a discussion thread after a month or so to see what everybody thinks.

Every soup ladled to the hungry, every blanket draped over to the cold signifies, in the final sense, a theft from my gigantic paycheck.

4. Coming down really hard on effort being met with no effort.

As an addendum to this, basically anytime I see someone come into a thread and simply try to flame someone who has actually been posting in the thread without actually adding anything useful yourself, you're going on vacation for a bit. Even if that person is clearly completely retarded, then the privilege of calling them retarded goes to the people who actually put effort in.

"Brown people" - Played out and just plain lazy posting. Don't use this in D&D for now.

It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am.

"gently caress D&D THIS IS SUCH A lovely FORUM" - Useless, white noise post. Seems to be trending among a few posters right now. No one cares what you think about D&D, we're going to start probating for this.

LF won't be returning, so we've decided that some LF threads such as the picture thread and Freep thread should be part of D&D. These threads are for entertainment value, and if you feel a serious issue is raised in one of them you should start a seperate thread. If you are unsure if a thread is appropriate for D&D you should PM a mod.

This doesn't mean FYAD rules apply to those threads, just we'll tolerate a more relaxed posting style. Trying to poo poo them up will just get you probated or banned, and it won't bring LF back.

If someones posts a thread to seriously discuss an article, theory, news story, etc, then normal D&D rules apply. Low effort, low content replies to posts people have put effort into will just get you probated or banned. Trying to get around this rule by posting bullshit walls of text will also get you probated or banned.

"A more relaxed posting style" doesn't mean you can stop using the shift key and punctuation, or posting "lol lol lol". I'll be handing out probations if I spot any posts like that from now on.

America is awesome: Ok we get it. America is the greatest country ever on the face of the lord's creation and is the epitome of everything good and right in this world. We're just tired of seeing it in every thread and it's becoming a really annoying distraction derailing all it touches because most threads just can't survive contact with how wonderful and wise America is. If the thread has nothing to do with America, and you decide to name drop the greatest country on earth for no reason other than to paint other countries in a bad light or to say that 'well yeah this country is good but check out how awesome America is!' we're going to have to probate you for derailing for no good reason. Keep that poo poo to America threads because other threads just can't survive the onslaught of perfection that is the United States of America.

I guess this would work the other way around too if you should be so inclined.

It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am.

We've got a couple of image threads now so we're going to adopt this PYF rule.

quote:

1. Please thumbnail or link images wider than 1200 pixels. If you post a giant image, that gets reported, that makes me have to scroll sideways to edit it, I will put you on probation while I’m over there. If you post an image that gets reported for being bigger than the size requirements and I don’t have to scroll sideways to edit it, I’ll just edit it without putting you on probation.

Reporting is awesome. We love it when you report people who are breaking the rules and encourage you to keep doing so.

But please, just report somebody once. You don't need to report the every post the person makes, it just crowds up the report forum. If somebody is continually breaking the rules in a thread, just make a little of note of it in the Reason for Report form by saying "read their other posts" or something like that. Thank you.
