How do you micro a huge endgame army? Control groups? Box selects? I'm a newbie Zerg player who has just started out. Usually I manage to defend from early pushes and outmacro my opponent, building something like a 150 food roach/hydra swarm with mutalisk support. But when I gather them and hope to go all idra on their asses, I often get matched against a player who kites me or retreats his army, then my formation (like roaches in the front and hydras behind) gets disrupted and I just get focus fired / blasted by siege tanks / burnt by colossi. Attack moving the whole thing doesn't work because all these fuckers move at different speeds. Should I control unit types individually? Also, what is the best way to order melee units like Zerglings to attack an opponent? Just A move or are there some tricks to it? E: And what's it about the ultralisks? I see that Broodlords are a really powerful late game unit, but each time I get ultras they just get destroyed, even by lings or marines they're supposed to counter. Now that the Bronze thread is done, i'll start with this one. Can I ask the resident experts to critique this replay? (Obviously from the perspective of a Bronze player), and advise on things I could have done, and things I glaringly did wrong. http://www.sc2replayed.com/replays/...an-kulas-ravine (I'm Defi) Thanks to the Bronze thread, i've improved quite a bit (I'm actually on an 8 game winning streak, now), and this game (bar a complete of absolutely stupid mistakes I made regarding macro) was 'okay' for me. Especially things i'd like advice on. Should I have been perhaps building another CC for an expo, on my initial push? I was holding off in case I was utterly destroyed by his defenses, but in general, what would be the best course of action? Where I take my probe that's built on 9 food out, to build an SD, is that correct? I've seen people say 10 food, but doing that supply blocks me, for a good 10 seconds or so. I supply blocked myself again, at one point, so i'm aware of my need to improve on that. Jimmy Mcriddle fucked around with this message at Aug 4, 2010 around 19:10 |

I will cut and paste from the OP. quote:1. Am I making workers? Make workers! watch the link from 8 mins on till around the hour mark. I am in platinum league and I still go back to this basic checklist because I still can't follow it despite my damnest efforts. If you have money to do number 1, do number 1. If you are doing number 1 and still have money left over, do number 2. If you still have money left over do number 3. If you still have money after doing number 3, do number 4. Really its that simple. As the pro in the vid points out, as the game progresses and more poo poo happens, we lose track of our basic checklist. If you can simply do that checklist and add attacking your enemy with your army from time to time, you can be in diamond league for sure since I can't follow that checklist and keep my money down past like 10 minutes and I am in plat league. TLDR: forget build orders, when to expand etc. forget everything except making sure you spend more money.

Although i'm not adverse to criticism, I think you're being overly harsh. I watched my own replay to ensure that I was doing what I could do keep my minerals down, and it's only at the end, when I have the large army, and am pushing for an attack, that I float an excess of minerals (1600), and that was because I was saving up for a potential counter attack, if it all went wrong. (I did ask whether this was right or wrong in my intial post, and actually broke my 9 game winning streak, by doing this exact same thing again, so i'm assuming it's not the correct thing to do) Throughout the game, my average minerals available were probably 200-300, which is well below the 500 that day9 says is an excess. Certainly not a 'mountain of cash' You obviously took the time to watch my demo, so i'm appreciative of that, and i'd appreciate you giving me the advice regarding scouting, 'right' units in TvT (my TvT is hit and miss, currently), and anything else that a Bronze level player can work on improving. E: I'm aware I do float some minerals, and that's something i'm actively working on improving. Reference my first demo, in the old Bronze league thread, compared to this recent one. seiken posted:In general it's easier to control a battle by just directly selecting the units than fiddling about with hotkeys. Have your whole army on one or maybe two hotkeys so you can back up/advance the whole thing easily, but if you use hotkeys for individual groups you'll often be selecting additional units you don't want to, selecting the wrong hotkey group, etc. Simple example: blinking damaged stalkers back is only possible with direct selecting. Same goes for a lot of tactical situations. Casters take priority in selections so you don't need additional hotkey groups to easily make use of their abilities. goatrope posted:Box select. What's the appropriate Terran response to a Protoss player attempting to cannon rush? Most Protoss players I've seen send out a probe to scout pretty much as soon as the game starts, so it's nearly impossible to have two supply depots and a barracks up to wall in by the time the probe makes its way into my base. But once the probe is there I feel like there's little I can do aside from rushing it with my SCVs before it starts building, which freezes my economy for a little bit. Is that an acceptable hit or is there something else I should be doing to stop the probe? Also, is there any chance someone could make a quick ASCII diagram of the correct building placement for a Terran wall? I'm not sure I'm aligning my buildings the right way.

Jimmy Mcriddle posted:Although i'm not adverse to criticism, I think you're being overly harsh. I am super sorry but you aren't. Case in point, after the 2nd supply depot, you sat around doing nothing (no training of workers, no building of barracks) forever. You didn't even tell the guy to go back and mine minerals or gas. Eventually you built a barracks but you had floated so much at that point you decided to shift click to build a second barracks right away! After that it was all downhill with repeated balloons up to 5-600 minerals then a mad dash to queue up poo poo tons of stuff to get it down again. You also ran into 27 supply cap and did nothing until you hit 27/27 and then you decided to build like a 4x2 of supply depots. If thats not floating resources I don't know what is. This next part is important so i will bold it When you queue production you are still floating resources. Just because it doesn't display in your bank account doesn't mean that its not there since queued units are not doing anything for you right now. You are only fooling yourself into believing you are not floating resources. Finally, I will point out that you are floating tons of resources despite not doing any actual scouting, map control, or fighting. All your energy was devoted to building your base and army and this still happens. So wtf is going to happen when you actually have to start fighting and scouting for real?? If you don't give a poo poo about what I have to say and believe your basics are loving rock solid then here is what TvT is like from what I am told and what I have experienced thus far in plat. In TvT it boils down to seige tank wars with vikings as spotters. The guy with more vikings wins since the air battle means that the guy with more vikings will end up with better spotting range for his tanks. Avoid trying to bust his base open if he refuses to come out and play Just starve him out by map control by checking for and fighting over all expansion attempts while you expand yourself. Just make sure no one does an end run on your mineral line with medivacs.

Is that an acceptable hit or is there something else I should be doing to stop the probe? Just attack the probe with one of your scvs, if he starts planting things *then* you pull your SCVs off and take out the pylon/probe (probe then pylon unless it's 5+ minutes in, take out the pylon first). Always, always scout your entire perimeter if a probe gets in and out of your base, so many people assume that if the probe is gone, the danger is too... (Just scout the whole thing even if you didn't see a probe, just to make sure) Wall wise, you should be using your rax as a long *arm* of your wall, since the orientation is fixed there is not a really easy way to describe the way to wall in every scenario. Make sure you turn on the building grid in the options to help you place buildings in the most optimal config. You should be able to wall any 1v1 map with a rax+upgrade & depot or rax & two depots. What I've heard is that the best thing is to put 4 workers or so to killing the cannon he spawns, that way you either kill it before it finishes or it can never complete before you start getting marines. The shield regeneration makes it really hard to kill the probe with workers. I suck and usually lose against the cannon rush when it happens though. The last time someone did it to me I even scouted it totally, saw no buildings in his base with my early workers and saw his probe coming up my ramp but I still lost to it because I did the wrong things (tried to kill his probe etc.). With Terran, if he finishes the cannon I guess you can mass marines or marauders elsewhere on the base until you have enough to rush the cannon although I don't know if he can walk it to your mineral line by then or what the range of cannons vs. a bunker is. Actually, it appears that bunkered marines and marauders will have equal range to a cannon, so if you build a bunker out of range of the cannon, it should prevent cannons walking in closer because it will be destroyed while forming. I'm still struggling to get my macro and micro correct, never mind the more advanced things I need to work on. Platinum is not super skilled at all. As I told you, I float resources myself and I am downright terrible at times, except it happens a lot farther down the line when more and more poo poo happens and I can't keep up because my basics are not sound. I struggle with this basic problem all the time same as you. As Day9 explains in that vid in the OP, strategy flows from sound basics. As you are doing things on your checklist, you will naturally get to the point where you have excess resources and the current level of production will not spend it all to a satisfactory level. The strategy flows from what you do with the extra resources which is why its tough to give advice to someone who floats resources so early on in the game. This is why the 9 probe or 10 probe supply depot is so trivial in the grand scheme of things when that small decision of whether to get supply blocked for 10 seconds is nothing compared to the 60 seconds wasted on being supply capped at 27. You and I both waste far greater time and resources in our management of our economy to talk about such things. For what its worth in general, I always go 10 supply depot. You will also "feel" when its time to expand naturally. Many times I expand because i simply can't spend my way down efficiently (ie queuing up units and structures) so its time to pull an SCV off the line and build an command center and float it somewhere when it done. The plan in TvT is generally to get Tanks with seige mode and get vikings to cover and spot them so I generally avoid fast expo since someone with tanks and vikings before the other dude tends to get excellent map control and the guy who fast expands is in super dangerous position. Basically, I don't expand until I get map control then I expand instead of trying to bust open a base since there isn't a real need to. If you have the map control in hand, its up to him to come fight you to break it. Anyways I am going to take my own advice and play more

I'm not so sure about this - siege tanks are slow to move around and pretty useless if caught on the move, and as a result you often end up in a defensive posture (at least I find I do). Infantry and hellions are much better if you want early-game map control.

(Just scout the whole thing even if you didn't see a probe, just to make sure) this is absolutely great advice. I play protoss and if a guy doesn't drop a peon on following my scouting probe around, i will find a dark corner of his base, start a pylon, then send my probe to his minerals and then out of his base so that he thinks he knows where it is and what it has been doing. Often that pylon will sit undiscovered until ten minutes in, at which point I will warp in a huge army of zealots, DTs, and stalkers. I have never lost a game where that pylon wasn't destroyed immediately. Allowing protoss to colonize your space with pylons is pretty much an automatic loss. If you discover the pylon late, say 5 minutes in, destroy it and start building spores or missile turrets or something. By that point I've probably committed to warping stuff into your base and losing the pylon just means that I'll send a warp prism to do the same job. Keeping out my phase prisms and observers means that I can't warp in, can't get line of sight to blink in stalkers, and will have to totally reevaluate my plans.
