Capntastic posted:I don't really care about exciting fights for the sake of there being fights, but as I said, in IB:A he builds up this big sort of challenge by way of an enemy palace full of tough as heck monsters and then skips even the barest description of the fights, and it's kind of a let down. It kind of cheats the reader out of the pay off, I feel. Does he do that sort of stuff often? I've only read the first three Mistborn books from him, but when he gets to a big build-up fight, I had zero trouble picturing every detail of it, and I don't usually get that out of books. Hell, the last fight out of the first Mistborn book played out like a drat movie scene in my head.

Capntastic posted:Yeah, the fact that it bridges the first game and the not-yet-released second game, and tries to smooth over the lack of plot, is an amazing hurdle to leap. I just feel that in doing so he left some stuff out that could've been polished if given more time. One thing I'll note is that on the Amazon page for it, there's like three editors listed. Design by committee seems to been a very real thing there. I'd try out Mistborn, then. It's a quick, easy read, is still pretty early in his work, and the trilogy is "complete" in a way. Way of Kings is supposed to be Wheel of Time long, and it just started, so you'd get a better idea of how he's able to construct a mythos better with Mistborn. Plus they're pretty cool.

I just finished Alloy of Law, and I found it extremely hilarious that in order to prevent being Soothed or Rioted, people wore tinfoil hats

I'm reading Warbreaker still, and I have a question. Does Vivenna ever become interesting? I've never actually considered skipping character stories before, but she's just so boring. If it helps, her story currently has her hanging out with Vasher, just learning how to Awaken.

Vaevicti posted:Yes, she becomes interesting. Can't really say any more without spoiling it for you. I finished it, and I have to say, you are a big smelly liar. She stayed boring the entire time. She was totally, 100% useless, except as a battery. That book focused way too much on her and way too little on Siri. I still liked it, though. Off to read Elantris!

Cartoon Man posted:Q: Xbox? PC? I'm really hoping it's a pseudo Metroidvania style, where you aren't a full on Mistborn at the start, and get the alloys with Lerasium that make you a misting of each type as upgrades through the game. Like maybe you start with a lovely one, like gold, and end up a full Mistborn who rips poo poo up. Maybe an Arkham Asylum type game, since tin is sorta like detective vision.

I've now read everything Sanderson has put out, and I need something new to read. I've read the Wheel of Time series twice, and I refuse to read any more GRRM. Any suggestions? I really enjoyed Sanderson's stuff.

Most likely he starts off by drawing six things as fast as he can, then he runs around the battlefield poking the ground for about 20 seconds, then continues.

Cartoon Man posted:Ugh, I was hoping for a somewhat major game developer studio. Is it too much to ask Ubisoft to take their new Assasin's Creed 3 engine and mod it to run Allomancy? It's bad enough it's GFWL, but you want Ubi's launcher in there, too? Are you a masochist?

Amarkov posted:Is there any significance to the Kholin family's naming pattern? The almost-palindrome pattern seems to be universal among major lighteyes, so it's weird we don't even get a throwaway comment about them not following it. There was a very short mention of how the symbols of the houses are all mirrored, and town names are all mirrored as well. It felt like a "Yes, this is important, but not right now" sentence, to me.

SageSepth posted:I haven't read whatever series that other character is from, but Vin stabbing people is always pretty cool. The Sword of Truth starts out okay, except for that character being introduced early in the first book, disappearing for like 300 pages, and then being fully and completely reintroduced in the same loving book for no reason. Then it turns into lesbian leather bondage fantasy stuff, then surprise sex fantasy, and gets worse.

My favorite part is how everyone has a cool fantasy name except the main character, whose name is Richard. That's still better than Malazan's names, though.

BananaNutkins posted:I hope Kelsier stays dead, or at least does nothing more than influence things from behind the scenes as a spirit-y thing. Brandon really does not need to verge into the resurrection rut that kills a lot of fantasy. Season 6, and I was thinking that before I got to that part of your post. The whole "Hey you dicks, I was chilling in Heaven and it's lovely down here" angle was pretty awesome.

Also Sazed fixed the planet, not Elend and Vin. He was able to take the power of Preservation and Ruin, which allowed him to reshape the planet to be as it once was. Elend burns up Ruin's body, and Vin kills his... other body, I guess. That part confused me a little.

The best part of WoK is that Kaladan's pity party should be pretty much done with. Now he just has to worry about his bridge crew, and also being a super badass.

Is there a thread for Raven's Shadow Book One Blood Song (Raven's Shadow) [terrible name] anywhere? I read it based on this thread's recommendation and it was loving awesome and I want to talk about it but I don't want to fill up this thread.
