Hardwick tends to rear end kiss and sperg about his guests a lot when he is flying solo for the podcast. Jonah is actually legitimately funny and contributes a lot to the show. The interactions between him and Chris bring a lot of the funnier parts to the podcast.

Matt is just their technical guy that Chris met at the Apple store who shares a similar interest in the same things Chris does. He has it pretty easy being able to schmooze with the guests while his only claim to fame is being a Genius Bar tech that can fix their Apple stuff. His quips he pipes in with are not really funny or entertaining and I'd wish they'd keep him the in background to handle the audio/tech side of things. Heck even in this latest episode they talk about how Chris gave Matt the podcast audio equipment and he left it in his car overnight where it was stolen.

I used to really like Pollack but he came off as a bit of a unfunny douche. Hardwick's distaste for charging people to listen to podcasts kept me listening though. God I hope Pollack's podcasts bombs and his crappy sounding "This week in..." company fails horribly.

I'm the same way with CDR. I wish I could get into it but unless the guests are exceptional I can't stand listening to the normal host long enough to bother.

Rollins is one of my favorite people on this planet and getting through that WTF was torture. Also, I don't know what Kevin's deal is but this constant bragging about getting high is annoying as gently caress, especially considering his kid should be just old enough be really hosed up by it.

I wouldn't want to be friends with Maron and I think he only gets top-tier guests via the inertia of his previous interviews, but I can't deny that he ends up with better interviews than anyone I've ever heard. Most interviewers have to tiptoe around issues like substance abuse, suicide attempts, utter life failures, terrible reputations, longstanding feueds... the list goes on, and in the end you get "Inside the Actors Studio" or something equally inoffensive. If you're the kind of person that wants to know how people tick then those interviews are worthless. I want to know the personal, private, uncomfortable and potentially highly embarrassing stories that no one has any business hearing. Was it totally classless to publish the interview about the Onion guy's suicide attempt? Yes. Would any "reasonable" program have refused to air it out of good taste? Hell yes. But it's absolutely fascinating and provides a window into a talented and depressed man's mind which you'd never normally hear due to our social standards. That's the kind of stuff that Maron gracelessly pulls from his "friends" every week. WTF is basically a gossip rag, except the info is vetted by the subject in question. Maron is not a good person and he doesn't really care about the people he's using/interviewing so he isn't afraid to lose face by being a pushy and nosy rear end in a top hat during questions.

I think part of it is that I could have had a personality like Maron's when I'm in my 40's had I not developed self-awareness nor tried to be a better person. He goes for the questions I would truly want to ask, but wouldn't due to social grace. It's cathartic to see someone get away with it for a change and soak up all the ill will on our behalf.

People keep saying what a bad person Maron must be. To me he is like every other pushy New Yorker\Jew I have ever had the pleasure to spend time with. I find it awesome and its the angle he comes at his interviews keep them interesting. I've listened to just about every WTF and I recall only one of them being boring as hell.

What is your point exactly? You're admitting that he is an rear end in a top hat but its okay because his podcast is some exploitative perversion of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting? And I'm incapable of empathy because I think a guy whose entire gimmick is being tactless and assholish is an rear end in a top hat?

For all your hilarious beep boop stuff youre just coming off like a battered wife. "No you dont get it! He's not an rear end in a top hat, it's just the soberness that makes him cranky! All the thousands of people who have met him and said he's an rear end in a top hat just don't understand him! He's working through the Difficulties of Life! Beep bop!"

And no, you're getting there, but my point is more that not every comedian has to "turn on their humor" in the first place, some of them are naturally funny and charismatic in Real Life, whereas some of them turn into bitter unfunny assholes (or abrasive repentant former alcoholics, if that's how you'd rather frame it) as soon as they get off stage

You could have saved everyone a lot of time and said "I don't like his character". Watch a few documentaries on Comedy some time and you'll see that the majority of popular comics are self diagnosed as being depressed. You don't have to be happy to be funny. I personally love Marc Maron, he reminds me of the NY Jew side of my family. You're not meant to like every style of comedy. I, for one, can not stand Bill Hicks no matter how much I try.

ps: The beginning of the podcast with Michael Ian Black is clearly embellished shtick on both of their parts. They're personas were made for each other.
