Went out for lunch today with a work colleague in the town I work in. When walking around we came across a sweet music shop. Chatted with the guy at the shop about guitars and decided to try a few out. Ended up walking away with a Farida D-52e. ![]() Much proffered the feel/sound of the matte top one. And the sound of this thing is loving astounding. Beats playing on my old £50 Fender beginners acoustic. *Pasted shamelessly from the musical instruments thread*

It casts a shadow of the blade down on the cutting surface, and since the blade itself is the cause of the shadow, it NEVER requires calibration like the lasers do. Perfect cutting line every time. Thanks for the tip! Looks like the LED system is almost half the cost, too. I'm a fan of that!

I had a chance to buy both the ottoman and chair at a little known thrift store for just $40 a year ago. There was nothing wrong with either other than the leather being a little worn and probably needing refurbishing. I didn't buy them because I just didn't have any place to put them, but I wanted them SO BAD. I should have just bought them anyway and made bank by selling them. dema posted:What is this? I'm a huge fan of my Draft/Matics. It's a Rotring 600: http://www.leadholder.com/lh-thin-r...tml#rotring_600 The Draft/Matic as I understand it is a clone of the Koh I Noor Rapidomatic from back in the day. Back then Koh I Noor owned Rotring (or the other way around or some third party owned both, anyhow they shared resources) and the 300-600 series are a result of this marriage. These are now available only in Japan after being discontinued in the 90s. You can find some around the web for as much as 130$ but in Japan they cost around 2,000 Yen which should be around 25 bucks. I bought mine here, some American living in Japan who exports things: http://www.smartimports.net/product...ing-Pencil.html They are also available from this store, Bundoki: http://bundoki.com/ (they have loads of cool stuff. Goddammit, why do the Japanese have all the cool poo poo?) Also from this guy, Andrey's Pencils on Ebay: http://stores.ebay.com/ANDREYS-PENC...d=p4634.c0.m322 The 800 looks the same (with a stylish gold trim) and have a retractable head but I read some people comment that this added mechanism creates some wobble with the lead-sleeve so I didn't go for it. As you can see I keep my tools in a nice wallet type pencil case and not in a loose pencil case bag thing or my pocket or (heavens forbid) thrown in to a backpack, so the retractable head is not a big selling point to me. It's seriously an awesome looking pencil and it feels really great to use. It is a bit on the thin side on the grip but I'm getting used to it. Also the fact that it's center balanced means you'd need to hold it higher up for a wrist motion type of drawing so if you're really used to the Draft/Matic forward balance it may be an issue. I hope I'm not derailing too far, but while we are on the subject of these pencils, how would they hold up to dry, sandy, dirty, hot conditions on the plains/deserts of Texas in the summer? I will be doing archaeological work there and finding writing implements for these conditions is pretty essential to me right now. And if these aren't the best solutions, which ones would be? (For less than $20 per pencil please.) Thanks!

(For less than $20 per pencil please.) Thanks! Let me know somebody if this constitutes a derail. Though talking about buying awesome pencils seems on topic to me. ![]() Well, I haven't used these in a desert so I can't really tell you. But I did use mechanical pencils in a desert environment and never encountered a problem, even with ultra fine desert sand you get from prolonged exposure to tank tracks. On the face of it I don't think any sort of pencil will give you any problems because of these conditions. Just make sure to keep them inside a pencil case or your pocket when not using them. If you're a pocket guy I can recommend the Faber Castell TK Fine which has a retractable guide tube so as not to poke a hole in your pocket/self. Incidentally it's the same one I used in the desert so it's "battle tested". Otherwise I heartily recommend the Draft/Matics which really can't be beat in terms of quality vs. price. Another consideration for you is whether you will have an appropriate writing surface. If you're going to use a thin lead holder (0.3-0.9) you'd need a nice smooth writing surface such as a stack of paper, a notepad or a smooth table. If you think you might use it to write on an irregular surface consider a wide lead holder like a 2mm. The Staedtler Mars Technico is a really nice one which also saw desert use with no problems. The thicker lead holders require a sharpener which some models have in the cap (my Mars Technico has one), though I think it's more convenient to have a separate one. Those Dodocase iPad covers look sweet! If I had an iPad I'd definitely consider them. I'm just a sucker for hardcover books in general and especially cloth binding.

If I had waited another week, I could have gotten that one. ![]() The build quality on this one is pretty good, and the keyboard isn't too loud, but it's certainly not silent. The keys don't feel nearly as good as my old Model M, but I think this is a really nice compromise between sound and feel. I still like my Goldtouch Adjustable keyboard at work better, though.
