#001A: What is Arma 2?
Arma 2 is basically a first person tactical military shooter with large elements of realism and simulation. There's both singleplayer and multiplayer, but the game really shines online (SP sucks and people who tell you different are liars). It's the sequel to ArmA: Armed Assault which was the spiritual successor to Operation: Flashpoint made by the same company and team, but with a different name due to legal issues. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is made by a completely different company and has no link to the original OFP (plus it's also an amazingly bad game). If you've never played OFP/ArmA the best way to imagine it is basically SWAT or Rainbow Six in a war theatre setting. It's not a pure simulation and due to the scale there are limitations (it's never going to have as good a flight model as a dedicated flight sim for example) plus they've taken some liberties to make it more fun to play. Arma 2 doesn't appeal to everyone though. It is a much much more realistic game than CS, BF or UT and if going on solo rambo rampages in a twitch-based game is what you like, you probably won't find Arma 2 much fun. However if you enjoy overcoming challenges through tactics and teamwork, Arma 2 is a game for you.

#001B: What is Operation Arrowhead?
It's an expansion pack for Arma 2 in that it is a standalone game, but you can integrate it with Arma 2 content which we plan to do on the server so you need to have both.

Features:
- Improved sound engine.
- Graphical and Engine improvements/optimizations.
- IR Laser Markers, IR Strobes and Flashlights.
- Full support for backpacks (including ability to carry static weapons, like mortars or UAV terminals).
- Military-grade FLIR.
- Streamlined and reworked in-game UI/HUD.
- Controllable UAVs.
- Improved vehicle simulation (damage model, physics, countermeasures, top down radars, warning systems, helmet-mounted displays).
- Improved weapon simulation (multiple optics modes, range finders, step based zoom)
- Sight adjustment for Sniper Rifles.
- Random Town Generator for Multiplayer/Single Player scenarios (like Deathmatch, also can have missions in the infinite terrain now).
- Most buildings are enter-able and highly detailed.
- Damage Model for all buildings, pre-scripted but still looks very nice.
- Performance increase related to better optimization of vegetation.
- Big graphical update to characters' faces, much more life-like.
- Reworked and improved radio chatter between units (including whispered variant).
- Voice acting done by adults.

BLUFOR:
- US Army.
- Delta Force.
- German KSK Special forces.
- Czech Special Forces.
- Takistani Locals.

OPFOR:
- Takistani Army. (Think Iraqi Army)
- Takistani Militia. (Think Afghan Militias)

Independent:
- Takistani Locals.
- United Nations Observers. (Confirmed to be the Chernarussian Defense Forces from ArmA2.)

Vehicles:
- US Army: Bradleys, Strykers, Little Birds, ATVs, M113s, Ch-47F Chinook, MQ-1 Predator UAV, AH-6x Little Bird UAV, UH-1H Huey and new HMMWVS (including ones with sniper-proof gunner positions.)
- Czech Army: Special Land Rover w/ 3 guns on it + Mi-17.
- Takistani Army: T-55s, BTR-60s, BTR-40s, SCUD Launchers, UH-1H Huey, L39 Albatross and AN-2.

Weapons:
- US Army: SCARs, M110 Sniper Rifle, M14 Rifles, M32 Grenade Launcher, Carl Gustav Recoilless Rifles.
- German KSK: Modified G36s used almost exclusively.
- Czech Special Forces: M60E4, Vz.58 and M4 Carbines.
- Takistani Army: FN FALs, AK-74 Variants, Uzi Submachine gun, Sa-58 variants and a Golden Revolver.
- Takistani Militia: AKs and Lee-Enfield Bolt-Action rifles.

Maps:
- Takistan, 160 Square KM (Chernarus is ~225), modeled after mountainous Central Asia terrain. Has very high peaks and mostly poor towns.
- Zargabad, (Capital) 70 Square KM, dense urban environment. A big urban sprawl. Most buildings in the island city are accessible.
- Desert, a huge expanse of desert terrain with some small towns/oil derricks here and there. Useful for Armor/Air engagements.

Country is graphically and culturally modelled after Afghanistan but politically follows Iraq, main enemy faction is local Takistani army, with a terrorist faction backing them.

Campaign:
- Consists of seven scenarios that are played through four roles: A Delta Force Operator, a US Army Airborne infantryman, a US Army Pilot and a US Army Tank Commander. All takes place in one day. Will not include warfare.
- Will be playable in co-op with upto four people.
- Will include many single missions involving other armies and/or the US Army (last I read, around 10, with around 19 training scenarios.)

The cover is insanely retarded but aside from that it's pretty cool. Sort of an updated Sahrani from Arma 1:

Videos:
- Alliance Forces Deploy video, showing US Army, Delta Force, German KSK and Czech Special Forces.
- Operation Arrowhead FLIR, CWC Radar, countermeasures and AH-6x demonstration, from the mission "Death from Above".
- A demonstration of the Random Town Generator and enter-able buildings.
- German Video showing a lot of the new vehicles and features, including SCUDs, Strykers, AH-6x and some features like FLIR and sight adjustment.
- Official video showing the Shooting Training scenario, including Javelin, Carl Gustav, SCAR rifles and the M32 Grenade Launcher.

#002C: Gaming schedule
Games are usually going on sporadically throughout the day, just jump and hang on TS for awhile to setup a game and/or post in the thread. There is an IRC channel which is #armagoons on synIRC and a steam group as well, but the best way is to use TS. Scheduled games happen at 9:00pm UTC/GMT on saturdays and sundays which is:

5:00pm EST/EDT
3:00pm MST/MDT
2:00pm PST/PDT
4:00pm CST/CDT

Or you can use this.

#002D: Rules
1. Be on Teamspeak, even if you don't have a mic. Have the same name in-game as on TS and use TS overlay. (Regardless of if you find it "useful" or not)
2. Listen to the person who leads the mission. (Even if you disagree)
3. Don't be a retard. (This includes TKing, griefing and all kinds of faggotry which lead to a swift and permanent ban.)

#002E: How to play
Right when you start you're probably going to die a lot and be confused because Arma 2 is more related to a sim than a standard FPS. A big-rear end PDF of a players guide will be up shortly which will hold your hand and soothe your terrified cries, though there are some basic role-specific guidelines up on the wiki:a medic, a fireteam leader and a mission commander.

#003A: System requirements
Minimal Requirements
* CPU: Dual Core Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz / Intel Core 2.0 GHz / AMD Athlon 3200+ or faster
* RAM: 1 GB
* Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 / ATI Radeon 1800 with Shader Model 3 and 256 MB
* OS: Windows XP

Optimal PC Requirements
* CPU: Intel Core 2.8 GHz / AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ or faster
* RAM: 2 GB
* Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT / ATI Radeon 4850 with Shader Model 3 and 512 MB
* OS: Windows XP or Vista

Remember that Arma 2 has scalable graphics, with all settings cranked to max only chinese botnets can run it at a decent framerate. Experiment around with the settings to find the right fit for you (you don't really need a 16km view distance).

#003B: Where to buy?
If you're a nice guy and want to support developers you can buy it from them directly at Sprocket Idea. It's also on Steam and every other place you buy your video games.

#003C: FAQ

quote:

Everything is blurry/blinding and I can't see poo poo
Go to Video Options > Advanced and turn down Postprocessing effects - turning it down all the way turns them off.

quote:

The stars in the night sky look like poo poo with NVG (flat white discs)
Go to Video Options > Advanced and turn up Postprocessing effects.

quote:

I have goddamn awful mouse lag
Go to Game Options- turn down Aiming Deadzone. Turning it all the way down should give you a similar response time that you get with regular FPS's. Note that there are some people who still experience mouse lag after this is applied for some unknown reason. Try adjusting your mouse options outside of ArmAII (like turning off mouse acceleration).

quote:

My head is bobbing like it's connected to my body with rubber bands.
Go to Game Options - turn down Head Bob.

quote:

I got ArmAII through Steam - where is the manual?
Right click on your ArmAII icon, under the General tab there is a link to the manual that you can download.

quote:

What are the game switches and what do they do?
In Steam, right click on the ArmAII icon, go to Properties >General > Set Launch Options and you can add these switches:

quote:

-winxp
If you're running multiple GPUs/SLI/ Crossfire you may also want to use the -winxp startup parameter if you're using windows vista or 7.
This changes the directx version so that it will support multigpu configurations in ArmAII. Also, it can't hurt to try to see if this provides you with better performance.

-maxmem=xxxx
With this you can set the maximum virtual memory that will be allocated to the game, this works up to 2047.

-cpuCount=x
Will change the amount of cores the game uses. If you're using quad core you may want to use 2 cores for some unknown reason.
Not recommended for dual core as the other may be needed in other running programs.

-window
In a few cases running the game in windowed mode improves performance.

-nosplash
Turns off the intro movie (you're going to want to use this one)

-world=empty
Removes all detail from the starting screen, in case the hit to the fps there bugs you.

#005B: Tips and tricks
1. Old cheats work in Arma 2. To end a mission, for example, press Shift+Numpad Minus and type ENDMISSION.
2. NVIDIA videocard owners with newer cards and drivers supporting PhysX when disabling PhysX acceleration (this works mainly for 260 and newer GPU series resulting into performance boost for NVIDIA users in ARMA 2, yet some 9800/8800 users experience smoother gameplay) A. Control Panels > NVIDIA PhysX control panel > Settings > switch to NO PHysx acceleration ! > "OK" B. Right click on desktop > NVIDIA Control Panel > Set Physx configuration > Select "Disabled" > "Apply"
3. NVIDIA SLI owners may gain additional performance when using EVGA SLI enhancer: http://www.evga.com/articles/00463/Default.asp More info and feedback about EVGA SLI enhancer here: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=76369
4. VISTA (64b) users may get way faster/smoother framerate in windowed mode with 186.18 drivers
5. To get a sharper image without anti-aliasing, make sure your fill rate is the same as your resolution. You can find the settings for both in Video Options. Once you have your video settings to your liking you may want to make your configuration file read-only or make a backup (sometimes ArmAII changes them for some inexplicable reason. Your configuration files are typically in your My Documents folder.
6. Upping advanced video card stuff like shadows sometimes improves performance on better video cards, since it uses them instead of the CPU or old cumbersome rendering techniques.
7. You can get a 10-20 fps boost with nVidia cards by editing the settings for arma2.exe. I'm using the Forceware 190.15 beta drivers but older drivers will work with this solution too. Go into the Forceware control panel and create a new profile for arma2.exe, it doesn't matter if it's Steam or any other retail copy. Scroll down and set the maximum prerendered frames to 8, and set vsync to force off. All other options can be left at their default.
8. You can be insane and create a RAMdrive and put a bunch of files on there to get rid of the stutter caused by your HD dealing with a fuckton of content streaming.

#006A: Mission making rules
1. Format both filenames and mission names properly. MISSION TYPE (SPACE) AMOUNT OF PLAYERS (SPACE) NAME (CO 16 Revenge of my dick). The tag should be in caps (CO/ADV) and if the player number is less than ten precede it with a zero (07). Do not include anything else and don't use all-caps for the name. For the filename use underscores instead of spaces.
2. Fireteams should ideally be 4 players max, including the team leader. Don't go above 6 people in a fireteam. The default format is leader, rifleman, automatic rifleman, assistant automatic rifleman (has an ammo box for the automatic rifleman). If you want a different setup (a medic for example) replace the assistant automatic rifleman first and the automatic rifleman second. There must always be a leader and a standard rifleman.
3. Avoid using respawn, people can spawn into whatever AI is still alive if they must.
4. Make an intelligible briefing.
5. Use weapon loadouts through the initialization screen to give appropriate weapon choices to appropriate roles, do not use ammo boxes full of guns. Ammo boxes is from here on out for ammo resupply exclusively. A small amount of customization should be possible, but gear should mainly be restricted to the fireteam roles. Sniper rifles only for the sniper, demolitions only for the demo guy and so on. Do not ever give the player a gun with the aimpoint sight. You can use whatever else you want, including other reflex optics like the Kobra but specifically not the aimpoint.
6. There should be at least one medic per every 8 infantry. So for two fireteams of four there should be one medic, four fireteams of four means 2 medics etc. Notice that this number is for infantry, other roles such as helo pilots don't count toward this number.
7. If there's over 20 players on the mission, include a separate HQ element with a commander and a medic. It's impossible to be overall commander of so many people while still leading a fireteam at that point.

Email missions you create to armagoons@gmail.com to get them uploaded to the server. RAR OR ZIP THE MISSIONS before you send them, otherwise they might get corrupted.

PROTIP: If you're making a huge mission intended for 20+ players split them up into different teams with different starting points who are tasked with accomplishing different things. This doesn't mean you have to have 3 teams of 10 men each doing completely separate missions at opposite ends of the map. An example would be a city-capture mission, 3 fireteams of 4 players each are the main force. Then you have two SPECOPS fireteams who start out in the forest near a road going to the city, their job is to take out an armored convoy coming to town. On a hill about 2km from the city a helo starts out with 2 more fireteams, their job is to move in and attack the city from the opposite direction from the first team and satchel charge the 5 tanks parked on the docks. There you go a 28 player mission which is easy to command and direct because people are split into manageable herds.

UnitedOperations.net Or how Impulse got tired of paying for the server.
Over the last few months we have been having a pretty steady dwindling interest in our playerbase and I cant very well justify paying for the box alone. With this in mind I have taken it upon myself to make some other suckers split the cost, and give all of you the option to play with a larger community base. Now alot of the players on here might be complete idiots, but it is giving you the chance to play with a different group when you choose to. We will continue to run the ArmA Goons server, and keep it as our own separate interest for as long as is needed. The current userbase of UnitedOperation.net is made up of the following groups. TacticalGamer, Shacktac, and ACRE development team. The main goal of this new community is to have an open playstyle more relaxed than typical TacticalGamer and or ShackTac event scenarios, but a good overlap of the same members.

Do you need to join their forums, no. Do you need to be a Regular, no. Do you need to pay to use the server, no.

Then why the hell did I do it? To give us some alternatives for when the server is dead mid week.

How great are the performance improvements with Operation Arrowhead? The original version wasn't unplayably slow for me, but it was a pretty borderline case in some instances. Also, is the campaign greatly improved? I already enjoyed the kind of free form, wonder round the world shooting things in a realistic manner style gameplay. If it's improved and expanded, and the performance is truly better (rather than just an advertising claim), then I think I might get the expansion.

It definitely runs a lot better, especially on the new desert maps. Campaign is more like OFP and is more about the operation (attack one of Takistan's "Afghanistan's" regions), and isn't focused on one squad or character. You play as pilot, delta force team leader, tank commander and rifleman. However, it is a bit short and buggy (not as buggy as A2 campaign at all though). I think you should try the demo.

You'll do fine no matter what. That's my motto.

I had no idea how much of a difference I would experience going from a 4870 (it was a 4870 x2, but the game would ignore the second GPU) to a 5850.... I have absolutely everything maxed (except distance) and am mid 40 fps.

I know all the answers except the one related to ArmA1.. . I think I know the mission name though.

I went through ArmA1 mission hell and Resistance to figure out these questions... I hope I win it .

You can play. If you're on Steam then ArmA will update to 1.54 which includes the BAF files - it's just that they will be lower texture.

Does it include the campaign too?

No. But multiplayer missions should transmit from the server, I played some today online with lite.

Multiplayer missions are included with the patch, the DLC offers: high res textures, high quality audio, campaign, single missions, higher quality satellite map for Shapur.

Now I remember my gripe with this game, grass and foliage near you seems to make an awesome difference, but as soon as you look 800m away you can just see an enemy perfectly prone on the floor. Any way to turn up the foliage detail or?

PROEDIT: is there any good singe player sniper mission that's really intense, Until I get operation arrowhead I want to keep myself ocupied.

IRONKNUCKLE PERMABANNED! READ HERE

Just get domination, turn off the armor and grab a sniper rifle.

Also, they added a grass layer that simulates the grass concealment at long ranges, you kind of sink into the ground instead. At 800m it's not uncommon just to see a head wiggling around.

I hope the intention of this involvement with the UO guys isn't to merge with them completely. I played a few rounds with them and they are a bunch of uppity spergin fucks who will get upset if you do poo poo like take enemy vehicles to use.
