Interest check for a PA TFR outing to Wicen's Farm in Furlong, PA. It's about three miles outside of Doylestown, and about 20 minutes north up 611 from Turnpike exit 343.

This is a public range, and one of the few without extreme fuddery, however there's a few caveats. Range fee is $15, and in addition for each type of firearm (pistol, rifle, shotgun) there's a one-time "membership" fee of $7 each type where they observe your safety and sign off. It's silly but best described as a private range with a $21 membership fee and $15/day cost.

The only other thing of note is that they have concrete rifle stations to prevent sending one over the berm. Benchrest only.

But at least it's open to the public.

I'm planning on mainly doing shotgun work with my 3-gun autoloader, and maybe some fun with my O/U. They rent throwers and sell clays, so it's just shells and giggles on my end. However, there's nothing stopping others from getting all up in the pistol or rifle bays.

I'm working on local food, however the Doylestown area and 611 corridor are right next door. There's The Brick House by the Turnpike, which is wings and beer and sandwiches in a Hooters kind of vibe. If we wanted to be stupid with beef we could shoot the afternoon away and do naBrasa Churrascaria at 4:30.

How does Saturday, March 3, sound?

Posting from India to say that the third of march should work.

Also going to hopefully go out tomorrow to shoot some trap with the guys who shoot the national level matches here in India. Beretta over unders are like 7 grand to 10 grand in usd over here. No one sells brownings and all the old dudes shoot with their purdy's or H&H guns. I am only used to my pump action 870.

Showed my family the awful shooting squad videos. They were jealous of my ak74.

March 3 sounds good for me, too. I'd like to finally shoot my Winchester Model 70 (with my friend's 20+ year old super-hot handloads).

I glanced over the site, and it says no cameras are allowed. So keep your spirit-stealing magic boxes at home, y'all.

I've been there a couple times. Its a decent range, but yeah the forced bench rest on rifles is kind of annoying. The "ceiling" is low so you end up hunching over quite a bit. Bring some kind of front rest if you plan on doing rifles. Also, the hot/cold timing I remember getting on my nerves, I felt like every time I was getting into a groove, they'd call the range cold for the next 10 minutes or whatever. Ended up getting in a lot less shooting than I would have liked. Oh well, its the only outdoor range I know of in the area that you don't need a "real" membership for, and can do 100 yards. I do most of my shooting at Classic Pistol.

And I'd totally join you guys if I didn't work every Saturday.

You caused a cake avalanche.

Those ribs were a classic mistake of "burning the poo poo out of it" after putting on a sweet BBQ sauce. There's precious few, if any, good BBQ places in Philly. In the summertime I usually do a 5 hour hickory and applewood smoke on some baby backs and they come out awesome, but not a lot of places will put in the time for true low-n-slow BBQ, or they take a shortcut and brine or braise.

Those ribs were neither. I'll save you one of my awesome ribs next time I make them.

OK, I am new to the gun thing (i.e. have never held a gun) but would like to get some firearm experience and learn to shoot things. I live in Philly. Would there be a good range for me to learn to shoot and use different types of firearms? I saw there was one in Yeadon and the South Philly gun club. Also, are the firearms courses from the NRA worth it? I'm short on cash right now so I only want to spend money on it if it's good.

I just took a spin through the NRA "Women on Target" offerings, and there ain't much in this half of the state. Closest is Lititz, PA. There's a bunch of introductory classes available in Philly and the surrounding areas for pistol (first steps, basic shooting, defensive in the home, etc.) but they're expensive, in the $125-$200 range each. Training is typically usually worth it, but if you're short on cash and don't actually own a gun yet it may be of dubious use.

Probably the best thing to do is tag along with some goons who can show you the ropes with various firearms. PA TFR is actually pretty chill and respectable (well, mostly respectable), despite being a group of people from the internet. The biggest downside with Southeast PA is that there's precious few ranges that are any good, and they're all private. There's a goon meet up on the third that's public, but it'll probably be less of a "first time shooting" thing and more of a group meet thing. Typically PA goon get-togethers are smaller, unadvertised things.

If you'd be willing to go, I could probably organize a first time shooting thing with some regulars, either up in New Holland (rifle, pistol, shotgun) or SPAG (more pistol), depending on if you're just interested in pistols or more general firearm stuff.

If you're really desperate, I would recommend TargetMaster on Route 202, right near the Delaware border. It might not be the best (indoors, limited to .223, .22 and pistol calibers, a bit out of the way, 25 yard max) but it's also the most accessible (no membership fees) and has a large selection of guns to rent. For instructions, I would ask around here.

EDIT: As mentioned, this is if you're really desperate, otherwise ignore this post.

TargetMaster sucks. Full of toolbags who treat you like an idiot if you've been there 1 or 50 times. The only benefit is that they rent full auto stuff.

TargetWorld is a good place to go, but they have a limited selection on rentals and only pistol caliber carbine for rent.

French Creek Outfitters is about the same as TargetWorld.

Your best bet would be getting involved in a goon shoot at SPAG or NHRPC. If you have a weapon you've never shot before or wanted to shoot (for me it was an M1 Garand thank you DkHelmet), odds are someone attending can bring it. If not someone can take their time and give you a walkthrough. If you're receptive and open to someone actually teaching you stuff I'll even volunteer to do this. I go to New Holland almost every weekend because I have no life. As long as you don't compromise safety and spout memes/MLP, you'll be welcome with open arms.

Yeah, there's only one thing that could ever get me to go there again, and it's the fact that they have full autos for rent.

I just remember being there one time back in maybe the middle of '08 (before the election) and they had stickers that were shaped like 1 dollar bills, but instead of George Washington in the middle, it was Obama with a turban.

I just think it's funny that people in the US talk up the constitution so much and then DON'T loving KNOW WHAT IT SAYS. "Checks and balances" are what you do at the end of the month to make sure the taxman hasn't hosed you over or something.

To be fair though, my experience is that Europeans are on average equally knowledgeable about their systems of law. I have probably read more of the German Grundgesetz than the vast majority of Germans have. Hint: it's a pain in the rear end. At least when we amend our constitution we don't erase what used to be there. The Gg has been amended hundreds of times and they just write that a certain article has been redacted. Oh, you want to find what it used to say? Better drive to the nearest German consulate! Ffffuuuuuuuck.

Also, don't ever worry about looking like a fool for asking a question, any question at all, regarding guns. Even something as apparently simple as "where are the sights on this gun and how do you use them?", or you'll end up doing something legitimately foolish like shooting the target carrier.
