3DTVs, Blu-rays, and Gaming in 3D (put on your 3D Glasses in order to view this part of the thread properly please)
A recent firmware update has added 3D support for games and movies. Game developers can add it to their already existing games with a patch, and some have already done so. A lot of upcoming games such as Gran Turismo 5 and Killzone 3 will have 3D support right out of the box. Blu-ray movies are also supported. Sony has made it known that they are really going to push 3D on this system. They make 3D HDTVs anyways, so it makes sense. The Playstation 3 is becoming hands down the best platform to view 3D content.

The Official PS3 Headset
It will work with not only your PS3 but with Bluetooth enabled cell phones. This is not your only option for a PS3 headset however, there is a huge selection of bluetooth headsets that work with the PS3 aswell as a wide selection of USB headsets also. As for this official one however:
  • The headset will feature “High-Quality (HQ) mode” with PS3. In this mode, the headset will take advantage of advanced voice technologies and noise cancellation techniques to provide clear and wideband voice input to the PS3. The HQ mode will ensure a much better voice chat quality on the PS3.
  • HQ mode will also enable accurate speech recognition required to support or enhance ‘Voice Command’ and ‘Voice Animation’ features. Voice Command was originally used in SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs for PS2 to administer the AI-controlled teammates using the WHO, WHAT, and WHERE format (example: Bravo, Attack, Nav Point Zulu). Voice Animation refers to the in-game character mimicking you during voice chat. With HQ mode, these features can be enabled on a much larger vocabulary in select PS3 games.
  • PS3 will display an in-game status indicator exclusively for this headset that will show the headset’s connection status, battery charge level, speaker volume level and microphone mute status.
  • Tired of wearing the headset during a long multiplayer gaming session or is your headset battery running out of charge? Just dock the headset in the supplied charging cradle, and the headset will work as a desktop microphone while charging.
  • Last but not least, the headset will automatically pair with the PS3 by connecting with a USB cable.

Playstation Eye

The Playstation Eye is the successor to the Eyetoy for the PS2. It's a much higher quality camera complete with microphone for use in videochat, as an in-game microphone or with a variety of software for the PS3. It originally came bundled with the game Eye Of Judgement which made use of it's motion sensing capabilities and has since gone on to support games such as Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Burnout Paradise, with upcoming support for games such as Little Big Planet if you wish to upload your own art assets to the game for use in user-created levels. You can also use it with the free downloadable program EyeCreate to record and edit your own movies, and with upcoming titles such as EyePet.

Fragnstein

Designed for people who would like mouse aiming in games. It can be used with ANY PS3 game at all, and has fully customizable firmware, allowing you to tweak sensitivity and button mappings to your liking. The build quality is solid, and many goons swear by it. The elitist COD4 top scorers love it too if that means something to you.

Playstation Move
Coming September 17th

The Playstation Movie is Sony's answer to the motion control trend and so far is shaping up to be the most promising. Check out the Move thread for more information.

This is a great trailer for the PS Move: Kevin Butler's Epic PlayStation Move-tage

[list][*]Online play on the PS3 is entirely free of charge.
The PS3's online network, which includes multiplayer games, friends lists, messaging (video, voice and text chats), a web browser and access to the PlayStation Store are all free.

The PlayStation Store is far more than just demos and microtransactions for games however. Developers also have access to an API that lets them access the store from the game, with each having it's own front end with just that game's products. Outside of games, the Store offers both standard and hi-def trailers for movies and games, PS one games (complete with digital manual and playable on both the PS3 and PSP, plus the saves can be shared between the two so you can continue on the go), and of course all those little add-ons and demos for released and upcoming games.

Besides that there is also a large quantity of games available to buy on the PSN. These all vary from region to region but there has been a push to substantial PSN game releases with large downloadable titles.

I got a big huge hard drive and need to put it into FAT32 ha;lp

McLarenF1 posted:

This Website has this tool and this GUI file. It will format any size partition (I did a 124 GB) to FAT32. Just partition and quick format a drive to NTFS (Windows 7 has built in tool, just search "create and manage disk partitions"), then save the two previosuly linked files to a common folder (NOT on the soon to be reformatted disk), run the GUI exe file and select the desired drive and format it to FAT32. That's it, you're done!

Blu-ray Playback?!
If you're interested in watching HD movies on Blu-ray, the PS3 (any version) is currently the best value for your money. Priced similarly to other comparable players it offers an internal hard drive for data storage, and internet connection for BD-Live, and DivX playback. Basically, it's the best blu-ray player on the market, and feature updates have kept it consistently so. Movies play in up to 1080p over component and HDMI, though around 2012 studios will have the option of restricting full HD to HDCP secured HDMI connections only. No disc currently does, and hopefully it won't come to pass, as it's frivolous to bootleggers anyways.

What's This I Hear about Keyboard & Mouse?
That's right, the PS3 allows any game that chooses to implement it to use Keyboard and Mouse controls. Unreal Tournament 3 supports it. Now, many games have chosen not to as well, for fear of the game being unbalanced.

Can I make a PSN account for different regions
Yes you can. You need an original e-mail address for each one you want to create. During the account creation process, just selection the country that you want to access to the PSN store too.

When is the PSN Store updated? :f5:
Every Tuesday around 6pm Pacific Time.

You can still get full HD without HDMI dammit
Both component and DVI will allow 720p/1080p signals for games if your TV supports it. The only catch is that Blu-Ray movies will eventually (in 2012) have the option to require HDMI on a per-disc basis. For games, your trusty PS2 component cables will work just fine -- for that matter all PS2 cables will work. However, if you are using an HDMI cable, it needs to be connected to a HDCP-compliant device or you'll get no video/audio. If your TV doesn't support HDCP via HDMI/DVI, you'll have to use one of the above-mentioned connections.

What's the cheapest place for HDMI cables?

In fact this is hands down one of the best websites to shop on for TV, audio, and computer equipment. Comes highly recommended by a lot of goons.

If I loving replace the hard drive in my PS3 with a bigger one, will it void my warranty?
Hell naw son. In fact, there is a section in Sony's manual which shows you exactly HOW to replace the hard drive. Pretty neato, eh? Don't bother with a Solid State drive though. It increases install times, while providing at most a 2 second boost in some scenarios.

I hosed up, and now my PS3 won't output video to my TV.
If you happen to use the PS3 on another display or you just start messing with the settings and screw things up follow these simple instructions:

1. Turn off your PS3.
2. Power it on by holding the power button for at least 5 seconds. You will hear a delayed beep.
3. Profit . The PS3 will automatically detect what it needs to output to, and at that point you should be prompted with a wizard. Follow it. To the land of Oz.

Yup. Go to the settings tab in the XMB and scroll down to System Settings, then something along the lines of general info or some such. I forget exactly but you should be able to find it in there.

Some third-party controllers that some of you may be interested in:

For anyone out there who prefers playing with a Xbox 360 controller and can't handle the Dualshock 3 for whatever reason, there is this
MLG Pro Circuit Controller for PS3

It's a wired controller for PS3 that is made like a Xbox 360 controller.

Good things are swappable PS3-style directional pad and sticks, swappable Xbox 360 style directional pad and sticks, Xbox 360 style triggers in the back and a mode to swap functionality between the front L1/R1 buttons and rear L2/R2 triggers.

Bad things, from reading reviews, are that both directional pads are not as good as the directional pad on the Dualshock 3, no vibration, no Sixaxis motion controls and the biggest con: a $100 price tag.

Another controller is Power A's Pro Elite Wireless Controller with concave L2/R2 buttons, concave analog sticks, and swapped positions of the directional buttons and left analog stick. It has rumble and Sixaxis support, but no Bluetooth. It uses a USB dongle, and it has a built-in rechargeable battery that can be charged up with a USB cable.

I thought the PS3 plays the game at the designed resolution. ie: the games are 720p, so they are played at 720p.

It doesn't upscale or whatever the Xbox 360 does.

The PS3 does not have a hardware scaler like the 360 does, if I remember correctly. So the max resolution is up to the developer. Most just do 720p, its that way with the 360 too. The vast majority of console games are really 720p. As far as differences go, it really doesn't matter anyways.

Yep!

Essentially they are the greatest of things. The fact the PS3 pad wasn't designed with triggers like that is amazing, and it's such an immediate and noticeable difference. Things just click hold, hold solidly, and feel exactly the same as the original buttons. Don't even affect the function of the triggers too, they depress as far as before. There is no downside.

Well, you'd have to ask the people who bought it for me, but it's a 2-year service plan that starts when the Sony one ends, so it's not like they overlap or anything.

Edit: I'm asking because my PS3 just yellow lighted, and I'm trying to figure out if I would be better off:

A) Paying Sony for a refurbished or for a Slim and losing all my gameshares and poo poo

B) Using the Walmart warranty (and possibly losing my gameshares and poo poo?) which would be free, but the quality of which I can only estimate based on wild internet hearsay

C) Paying someone on here or on eBay to fix it so I can keep my poo poo, but taking a chance on the fact that I'm paypaling some random guy money to fiddle with my PS3.

I think that if you're looking to retain your data, the only way that's going to happen for sure is by having some third party do it for you. It's my understanding that Walmart will try to repair the actual system, but if they can't they'll just replace it. Once that happens you lose all your stuff.

Thing about controllers like this though, is are the face buttons analogue or digital? Many third party controllers just go digital because it's cheaper which really screws you over if you want to play something like MGS4 or GT5 with the controller. The Amazon page doesn't say anything about it either so I'd be cautious.

Edit: You might wanna put a little info about the 3D capabilities of the PS3 also OP, since the PS3 can now play some games in 3D and I think Blu Rays too? You know, the only game I ever actually noticed taking use of the analog abilities of the face buttons was Bouncer for PS2, which would do either a light or heavy kick based on how hard you pressed the button. I could NEVER consciously do the type of attack I wanted. I would always either push it too hard or too lightly, it was bullshit and I resented the controller just for having that ability. And frankly I felt the same way about the sixaxis at first when you were forced to use tilt for poo poo like balancing in Uncharted or controls in Lair which I never bought because of the controls. They were just adding a function to the controller that made my user experience less fun.

Now I haven't played the MGS series and I just use the analog triggers to drive in GT5, so I can't sympathize with those two. I'm just saying I would love if the whole industry just kept analog for the trigger buttons and let the face buttons be digital.

Edit: Just so everyone doesn't think I'm some bitter old man pining for his NES Advantage, I do enjoy the sixaxis ability on all the many games it's been utilized properly in. I just hated the way it got shoehorned into everything when the ps3 was new. That's why I like the Move over the Wii. They either have to design games specifically for the Move or they have to shoehorn Move functionality into regular games without screwing up the games for people who use the dualshock. As a related question, how many of you are planning to play Killzone 3 with the Move instead of DS3?
