Time to back up my save games! I've used compressed air on my ps3 a couple of times. I'll try vacuuming the vents anyway.

I don't think you have to panic just yet, but don't use compressed air again. As far as I can tell, unless you're working with it open, the air jsut makes the dust fly around in there without actually getting it out. It's off of what you need it to be off of, but still sort of built up in the system.

Nurse?

So we hear about dead PS3s with the YLOD. What does a flashing red light mean?

I mean besides it being obviously just as dead. Cursory Google search seems to indicate it's far rarer.

gently caress. 80 GB PS3 with software PS2 compatibility that I use. Primary gaming/BluRay/Netflix/other streaming system in this home.

edit: Looks like there's a reasonably-priced repair place here in Toronto at least, charging "$60-80" for YLOD or red repairs. http://www.videogamerepairtoronto.ca/ps3.php

Those repairs typically don't last and are only meant so you can sync your trophies/copy your saves before it dies again.

Nurse?

So I'd be better off sending it to Sony and sucking up whatever they charge?

It'll be a kick in the pants, but I have all of my on-hold game saves on PSN+. Just being without this for six weeks would blow.

edit: choice would be easier if I didn't care about PS2 compatibility. Stupid Sony. I sure haven't backed up my PS2 saves lately unfortunately.

edit2: I think I'll try the local repair, backup obsessively, and just see how long it lasts. Then maybe I'll trade it for a slim if it dies again and try to get my PS2 back from my sister

If I let a third-party fix my PS3, will Sony do paid repair/replacement if/when it dies again? (It's long out of warranty.)

My PS3's disc drive has been sounding like it's working overtime lately but today it started sounding really haggard. It's making a really loud grinding sound, I was thinking about taking it apart and seeing what's up. Will I need any special tools to get to the disc drive or will I just need a screw driver?

My Playstation got stolen, I called to get my password reset so I don't end up with tons of charges or anything. The service guy told me I should have the officer "working the case" call and they'll do anything they can to help. I told him that, he seemed skeptical and so am I, any chance they can/will do anything to locate it if it goes online or something? I'm more interested in locating it in hopes of finding all the other stuff that was stolen.

Screwdrivers are all you need to take the PS3 all the way down. Mostly Phillips, but there are some Torx in there too.

I've heard of this happening before, but it was found because the thief logged into the owner's account and used it from a different IP address. Otherwise, I'm not sure what your chances are. Good luck in this.

I didn't know where to ask this since there isn't a playstation megathread I don't think? I was trying to play Champions Return To Arms on my old rear end PS2 and when I got to the next level, the floor texture completely didn't load so I was just walking around on nothing. I went out and bought another disc and I was playing a few levels, then the same thing happened on a different level. It can't be the disc because the exact same issue happened on two different discs on two different levels, what I'm curious is it my memory card being hosed, my save being corrupted or my actual PS2 crapping out?

If it's not the game itself, I would imagine it's most likely the PS2.

It wouldn't even be reading your memory card or save file except when you actually save the game, so it can't be those.

As the original contracts for content for the streaming service start to come to an end, Netflix will almost certainly go through some major changes very soon, and probably not for the better. The content producers now realize just how much Netflix streaming and similar services kick the poo poo out of the cable channels that they own, and will do their best to make streaming media less attractive to customers. It's an absolute textbook case of vertical integration stifling innovation and screwing customers.

Yeah, PS3 Netflix says it couldn't connect. Works "fine" on the iPad, though the iPad app is a sack of poo poo but that's a derail for another thread.

The PS3 app tells me to go to netflix.com/tvhelp which has a link for PS3 guidance, though that goes to http://us.playstation.com/support/ps3+ which is -- surprise surprise -- a broken link

Because they have to remove a Void Sticker that can't be removed without basically self-destructing and leaving evidence.

That said, void-warranty repairs are the same (I think?) as out of warranty repairs. Costs the same, same poo poo, etc...

Anti-Fat

I've owned a PS3 for about a year now but really convinced it was worth the money yet.. it just seems so.. poor quality I guess.

I have a slim model which creaks and groans when it's turned on and from what I've heard this is normal..

The user interface seems to be past its time and unpolished.. I never really liked it before but it hasn't undergone any usability changes or enhancements since I got my PS3

The wireless built in to the PS3 is utter poo poo and runs so much slower than my laptop's wireless connections..

Connecting to my laptop to view videos and music works but always throws up stupid meaningless errors that don't seem to affect anything. Other times I'll be scanning through my list of movies and it the connection seems to "stop" for no reason.. but going back to the main menu and trying again makes it work fine. Sometimes watching videos they will stop halfway through for no reason. Feels so unprofessional and poorly made, like it's designed to only work only 'most' of the time.

I can't watch videos from a USB unless its in FAT32 format and specifically in a folder called VIDEO? What the hell?

The PlayStation Store interface is really slow and unintuitive.

I guess the PS3 as a whole feels slow and unintuitive, poorly made and poorly supported. This doesn't feel like a well-made system like my PS2. Every time there's a firmware update I look for something like improving the user interface, adding cool new features etc. But it's always useless poo poo like a PlayStation Plus I don't care about, "stability" fixes that nobody knows what the hell means, some new HDMI setting that I have no idea what it does, disabling people's third party controllers etc.

I've never used an Xbox but really wondering if it's any better, certainly seems more secure and better supported.

The X360 uses a very similar system except they shrinkwrap it in so much Web2.0ey crap like huge graphics and rounded corners that you can only see five options on the screen at once. I've always found it very easy to find things in the general XMB; what are you having trouble with?

I will fully concede that the slims crack like gently caress, though, it still bugs the hell out of me.
