I finished Swan Song and "mixed feelings" sums up the experience. Like others said before, it felt like the story tried to explore too many ideas without developing any of them significantly.

Honestly what I hated the most was the seemingly arbitrary reasoning behind why rescue never comes, why the snow storm lasts for MONTHS (ignoring the fact that this would have buried everyone). So, the earthquake was predicted by some people, but it's never explained why or how. Man-made? Armageddon? Whatever. But I guess we're supposed to take it at face value that something truly awful happened to the whole world, because a realistic government response never comes. It irritates me I guess because it feels like very sloppy handwaving to provide a reason for lawlessness to continue. Frankly, all I could think about during the course of the story is how much better the anime Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 handled an earthquake disaster story.

A lot of things were never really explained or developed either, like what the deal was with Aroe. I mean given that she's a pretty major character I guess her issues are supposed to be symbolic of or analogous to the situation in general, but I don't feel this was handled very well. To be frank you could remove her from the story entirely without affecting it too much in my opinion. The ghost Yuka was talking to in the Good End was just kind of...there, as well.

A kind of hilarious "gently caress you" to the players who chose to gently caress Taeko. Oh, who am I kidding, I'm sure there's a plenty large enough audience who was just fine with that choice. Also funny how Tsukasa never brings up how hosed up it was for the mother to knowingly try to get them to gently caress in the first place.

I got two endings, which as I understand it is everything. One was so overly grim and nihilistic to the point where it became mostly comedic (I particularly laughed at the THIS IS SYMBOLISM raising of the Jesus Christ statue), and the other is just vague and overly cheery without providing any real closure.

6/10, I guess.

While I wouldn't say I liked the ending, I didn't find it disappointing as such, and I wouldn't say it was a cop-out. It just... wasn't what I was expecting.

I still found the game enjoyable throughout, ending included.

I can't say I hated Remember11, and really, I mostly liked it up until then. It just took all that inertia that the plot was building up and slammed ungracefully into a wall. It's like when I stay up all night writing an essay and suddenly go "gently caress it, I'm done." There are a lot of things that go completely unaddressed, and I don't think they did those on purpose.

Also, plot holes.

Please tell me there is a font hack for Kira Kira like with Higurashi, because my word that default font is bad.

At least I was able to duplicate the UI Removal hack from Higurashi Kai to get rid of the UI in the corner. BGI must reuse a decent amount of assets game to game.

E: I mean I've found a lot of ipl._bp hacks, but they don't seem to work. I guess they don't work with the All Ages version or something.

Muv Luv Alternative is currently at about 75% for the first partial patch and between 20-25% done overall.

Just finished Remember11. Was secretly hoping that the whole ending thing was just over-exaggerated, but man, what a disappointing way to end it. At least going through all the TIPs and using some deduction gives you a pretty decent grasp of what's going on. Though I never once saw any mention or hint (maybe I just don't remember right) of Yukidoh Sayaka, who turns out to be a pretty major part of the story.

Phlogistic posted:

I can't even begin to explain how well this describes the ending.

Overall still a good game I thought, would definitely recommend playing through it if you enjoy mystery/suspense and don't mind ending without everything directly explained to you.

There isn't (except for the scene Phlogistic mentions), but personally I don't consider it to be that major.

(Major Remember11 spoilers)As far as this story is concerned, it's enough to say that Satoru's goals were to test the quantum teleportation technology and to save Tobirin. His other intended applications of the technology are kind of irrelevant (especially now that Enomoto's dead and Satoru doesn't remember them). The hints and background information we get about them are just that; background.

I feel the problem is that because the story ends on a couple of cliffhangers, all the background information becomes a lot more important to us because we hope it may resolve those cliffhangers. But the background information is incomplete because it's just that, background - so we end up feeling unsatisfied.

For anyone interested in new releases, Tengu Translations have just released an english version of a really good free VN called Tokyo Alice.

Unfortunately, the translation is terrible. It's accurate and understandable, but the translator clearly isn't a native English speaker and there's been no attempt to proofread or edit it; the game suffers greatly as a result. I really can't recommend it to anyone unless you consider yourself entirely immune to Engrish (or possibly Spanglish?). Hopefully they (or someone else) will release a version 2 sometime to improve it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'll be taking a week off before starting the Sadogashima Arc, and it should take at least that long to get a patch up. Do not hold your breath on this.

Also, this arc may be a cockblock to many of you, since there is no Sumika, no BETA, relatively few reveals, a very slow start, and mostly just further buildup to what you really want to read in the other arcs (that's not to say the coup d'etat isn't awesome, it's just not as awesome as you might be hoping).

Fantastic, looking forward to reading the translation of this. Got to agree with Ixrec though, the Coup d'etat Arc is definitely more dry than the rest of the game (as is expected from the beginning portion of the game). There are a few interesting aspects, but overall there isn't a lot of action/drama/suspense when compared to later parts. After this arc the game really takes off.

I'm having some trouble getting planetarian to run.

The game itself runs fine without the english patch. I can install the patch but it crashes when I enter the program.

Does it have anything to do with running applications while installing it? I closed my windows but I think steam and bittorrent were still running.I've tried shutting down and restarting but it doesn't help. Should I try downloading the patch again?

Sorry if this info is next to useless, I'm generally horrid with computers so I'm at a loss on what's the problem. If anyone has any clue on what to do, that'll be great.

Edit: I'm running on windows vista if that's any help.

If you check, make sure you actually get into the game itself, the very beginning has voice acting regardless. Also keep in mind this is just speculation, your problem could very well be something else. The website for the patch has some information on how to buy the game and how to install the patch:http://planetarian.insani.org/guide.html. Maybe try seeing if your patch is properly installed. I didn't install it like the guide stated though, I think it was more like extracting it.

I haven't ever encountered this specific problem before, but is your computer set to Japanese locale? That can solve lot of problems when running visual novels, and really the only drawback is that your computer sometimes displays the yen symbol instead of the backslash. You can also use AppLocale, but I've found that it isn't as reliable.

You can change your system locale under "region and language" in the control panel.

Yup, Mine was already set to Japan before I installed it but the problem still remains.

To give more exact details, when I load up the game, it states that the patch has suffered an application crash and needs to close down.

I can reach the main menu and the start/load options are set in english but when I try to start the game, it kinda stalls in the opening screen.

Not sure what else I can do, I can give the details to the appcrash if that's any help to anybody computer-savvy.

Oh, I see. I thought the program would crash when you tried running it.

I've had similar problems in the past with other visual novels, this sounds like some kind of issue with the font. Some quick searching reveals that this is the font used in the English patch. Extract it to your C:\Windows\Fonts folder and see if that fixes the problem.

Holy poo poo, it worked!...I think.

CLANNAD finally knocked off Ever17 from the top spot in vndb's Bayesian ratings

On that subject, I still have no idea how vndb's Popularity ranking works. Utawarerumono is ahead of Umineko (51.80 to 47.97), but lags behind Umineko in Bayesian rating (8.05 to 9.02) and overall rating (8.09 to 9.09). A 41 vote difference can't make that big of a difference. Sharin no Kuni is ahead of CLANNAD despite trailing in total votes, Bayesian rating, and overall rating. Does it attempt to weight certain levels differently?

It's gone back and forth a few times over the last few weeks. I guess it'll stabilize eventually; I'm sure there can't be that many new people playing Ever17 any more.

Nate RFB posted:

It's weird; it's calculated in a completely different way.

According to the admins, each vote on a VN increases its popularity score by the square root of the number of VNs that user has rated worse than it. So, a user who has voted on five games will contribute zero popularity to their least favorite VN and two popularity to their favorite. The displayed scores are then rescaled so the most popular VN has a score of 100.

The popularity score is really just a curiosity; the Bayesian rating is a better indicator of pretty much anything you'd want to know.

If I remember correctly, Ixrec said that the size of the 2nd patch is close to twice the amount of this one, so the wait for the next patch might be a while. Somewhere between 3-4 months I'm guessing if he keeps at the pace he's been at.

Ixrec's planning on going at about three fourths of his normal rate, at least for a little while (although he planned to do this with the first patch too and ended up doing 20 KB a day anyway). The second patch is also going to be about 1.5 times longer than this patch. It took about seven weeks to get the first patch fully TLed plus about a week extra for TL check and the rest of the team to figure out a couple of things, so probably somewhere in the range of two and a half to four months.
