I cracked up at Beats saying "still warm" after the baby had just been born

My favourite bit of the whole season was Beats talking about how he hopes the baby has "arms and teeth", and Roche having to delicately explain that it won't have teeth and it would be fed mashed-up food, to which Beats replied "Oh, right, cuz that's what Robocop eats".

I kinda feel this, I liked the middle three seasons, but the last season started to feel kind of sensational and this season almost feels like a circus. If anything, I wish it were smaller and less glitzy. All the contestants this season feel like hammy clowns trying to become the next media darling.

It's like any long-running competition show, it stops being about what the contestants can do but more about who they actually are. The producers pick as many of the crazy ones as possible in an effort to generate drama and tension rather than just, y'know, picking the people who can make the nicest cakes.

I used to work with him on magazines. Here's a story:

Dave was doing a personal appearance at a local supermarket, with a "beat the Games Animal at Street Fighter" challenge. He wanted an edge, so got the company boss to tell one of the other editors (who couldn't stand Dave, but the argument was that it was good publicity, so do it) to set up a programmable SNES pad with a bunch of super moves.

What the editor didn't tell Dave was that the pad he gave him didn't have battery backup, and the moment it was unplugged all the programmed moves vanished. So Dave got trounced by a bunch of kids.

Anyway, that's my Games Animal story.

The production team are not front and centre though. Obviously everyone has their role to play, but for all intents and purposes that's not what C4 have paid for.

And, while I don't want to diminish the job they do in any way, there are quite a lot of TV production people out there and it's not like bringing in a new crew would be in any way noticeable to the viewers.

I didn't watch series 1 and 2 but I don't see this at all with bake off. It still takes time to learn who people are and there's no huge thing telling you all about their life. I know bits about people from what they've made but that's about it. You must never have seen Big Brother series 4 - 5 if you think Bake Off has changed into a contestant driven show.

Also I finally watched BattleBots. Jesus Christ what an annoyingly formatted show. There's so much pointless padding, so many extra presenters. They have a female host who is just a bridge between things - saying 'and now here's...' and then two football style pundits who talk about the robots. They're both men. It reeks of old fashioned sexism with a good looking woman as the face of the show who isn't actually allowed to do anything of substance.
Then two commentators who again are both men and don't do anything particularly different from the pundits.
THEN there's an announcer who is in the ring with people. That's a guy too.
Finally there's another woman who talks to people in the pit.

When they're activating their robots they also have to press a button. So there's about five minutes of them showing off their robot until they press the button and then a countdown occurs and then they start the fight.
Afterwards the losing team very rarely gets spoken to but you can see them kicking off in the other booth, no sportsmanship there.

It's also weird how few robots have flippers. Or at least decent flippers. Everything is a Carbide style whirring blade. Which is all well and good but there's some crazy designs that a flipper would easily destroy. There's no restriction on having the same sort of flippers so why not just go mad?

I have to admit I kind of like the OTT nature of Batlebots, sure there is a LOT of padding for what is essentially 4 or 5 fights, but I must confess I like how goofy the commentators are and how excited they get, and the random announcer who looks like he doesn't even know what he is shouting about most of the time. It's all very earnest in its enthusiasm. And the robot designs are way more fun.
