Some people do take these comedy quizzes more seriously than others. Watching David Walliams seething on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year a few years back because Russell Brand and Noel Fielding were winning through sheer idiocy and entertainment value combined with the odd lucky answer was hilarious, and the most I've ever laughed at anything to do with David Walliams.

I've now got a hankering to watch that again. Big Fat Quiz Of The Year has never lived up to that first one.

And Steven Moffat has denied this has anything to do with Sherlock. I'm inclined to believe him since they can't make series 3 of Sherlock anytime soon since both it's stars are busy with the Hobbit. Private Eye suggests that the reason for the shortened series is that Doctor Who is financially in a terrible state.

Ahh booo. If it's true though I'd be pleased - Sherlock > Dr Who. Dr Who tits me off a bit because the beeb spends a big chunk of budget on a sprawling scifi series with loads of scope and it's charming and all but it's never going to be quite satisfying enough because it's a bloody kid's show (apologies to any autists/whofans)
Come ooooooon gently caress the kids they already have loads of shows, give me a proper british scifi series.

Yeah Mock the week is loving painful to watch. I don't know why but it winds me up worse than anything else on TV - except maybe the variations of "teenagers do a thing" shows you get on BBC3.
It's weird because I like a lot of the comedians they have on fine in other contexts

It's a show for the whole family, not just kids! And what, you weren't satisfied with Outcasts?

But seriously Doctor Who (along with Top Gear) is one of the BBC's most profitable shows what with foreign sales and merchandising so its budget doesn't really take away from other shows. I'll bet it makes more than its budget back for them. Its still dealing with budget cuts though along with the rest of the beeb so it's not surprising that its finances seem to be hosed enough that they can't afford a full next series.

Yes! I was excited about Outcasts and thought might shape up to be a pretty good show in later series, but it got cancelled. And I understand Dr Who! I like Dr Who! It's just it's the only british sci fi show with a decentish budget at the moment and it's so lame a lot of the time. Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm honestly not sure how telly works) but isn't it very hard getting that sort of series commissioned in this country because they are very expensive and risky? And with Dr Who already ticking the scifi box for the BBC wouldn't they be less likely to commission any ambitious new series? Not rejoicing in slashed budgets, poor old telly :(

I'm sure I'll become less grumpy about Dr Who when Misfits comes back on

6 Music have offered Collins & Josie Long the Saturday morning slot when Adam & Joe's run finishes again. As far as I know Collins has accepted, which does seem to suggest that Herring's running joke that Collins is just trading his way from comedian to comedian to better his own career is actually true.

I just don't understand how he keeps getting work. I've listened to his Radio 6 show, he's awful. I've listened to him on various comedy podcasts, he's not funny. I've read his stuff in Radio Times, he knows dick all about movies. His opinions on pretty much any subject are either ill thought out, reactionary, or just downright dumb. He also has a really smug punchable face.

Him & Josie Long is probably going to be a trainwreck if their performances on individual podcasts are anything to go by.

Collins is radio poison, but I would have quite liked to listen to Josie Long with someone else she is luvvvverly.

Yeah Sky Arts is alright, it shows quite a lot of ballet which is nice.

But yeah don't get me started on beeb cuts, it winds me up like nothing else. The idea that there should be a body that creates programming that has a nobler agenda than targeting demographics and selling ad space is really important and is one of the few things I'm proud of in this country. The BBC is a loving pain in the arse with the way it runs itself, with it's unnecessary obsession with ratings, the compliance, the "balanced" rather than unbiased reporting and it's irritating inefficiency. But it's still worth the piddly little licence fee which I'd pay for Radio 4 and the website alone. It's about more than not having to watch adverts between episodes of Strictly Come Dancing, it's about having a service that can provide content that advertising funded large channels cant get away with and that guy is totally right gently caress everyone who wants to hobble it and ruin everything GGRAAAGHR SO MAD

I love love love university challenge and form an impromptu team with whoever is in the room at the time, but I'm so bad at remembering names. I'd struggle if paxo asked "Who was your best friend in highschool" straight down the camera. The amount of times I've answered a question with "Oh I know this! THAT GUY!!" and then wanted to punch myself in the face for being such a fud.

Love the picture puzzle rounds they sometimes have though, great stuff. And it's the only time I've ever managed to gain social cred for my knowledge of the taxonomic names of british mammal and bird species :spergin:

It's not as though I didn't think of that, come on. It's something I notice every single time I watch it, I've been saying it for years now.

My knowledge of maths is a lot stronger than my knowledge of classical music, which means I can say with confidence the maths questions are much, much more specialist than the musical ones. That's why I brought it up. You would have to be a dedicated, above-average maths student to get most of the maths questions but I don't know a single music student who wouldn't be able to get nearly all the UC questions.

Specific examples: Tonight there was the "New World Largo" by Dvorak. That's a hugely famous piece of music, especially to the British public. I'm not saying that the vast majority people can name it or its composer (its more famous as the Hovis theme tune), but far more people who know it was Dvorak than would know other UC questions, it isn't specific, degree-level knowledge at all.

In contrast, there was a question about the Goldbach conjecture. No-one who doesn't have the knowledge of atleast a second year maths student is going to be able to come close to being able to name the Goldbach conjecture.

My general knowledge is good enough to recognise what is an easy question and what is esoteric knowledge, and I'm telling you, all the other subjects except like the "name this country on a map" questions require a much deeper knowledge of your subject than the music rounds.

I don't think the classical music questions are as obvious as you think. I do think the maths questions are particularly advanced, but I find for example the art questions very broad and rarely get them wrong, but only because I have had an interest in painting since childhood like you and your classical music. I have never gotten a single question right in a straight up classical music round, it's a very difficult thing to retain if you're not genuinely interested - as you obviously are. Everyone I watch it with groans when the classical music question comes up, we always hope it'll be something about radiohead or television theme tunes lol.
