Anybody else else watch Dispatches?

As an ex-squaddie that program confirmed everything people at my level think, although it was basically a rip of Lewis Page's book. Highly recommended watching if you're interested in the MOD and missed it earlier.

Also being "in a bubble" was pretty much spot on. Is it just mine or do everybody else's facebook news feeds read like a screenplay of the Inbetweeners?

I was Rifles so I've noticed your avatar for some time now. Guessing you just really like Sharpe?

My favourite example was comparing our hierarchy to that of the USMC, which is slightly larger than us. They have about 90 officers above the rank of brigadier, and we have over 400.

Yeah, Sharpe and Hornblower are pretty cool. I'm a major history buff. Still sort of hoping one day we'll get a British high production WW2 series.

Or at least another Hornblower episode. Before the bloke who plays him ages.

Hornblower was awesome but I never got Sharpe, it just seemed a bit too cheesy!

When they were talking about the new helicopter which was chosen ahead of the black hawk, surely they have to move on and attempt to improve the design considering the black hawk was flew in the early 1970s.

The military in general seems far too top heavy though. I cant even begin to understand how 20,000 people are involved with sourcing equipment.

Also doesnt the navy have more admirals than battle ships?

They are both '70s aircraft, the Lynx flew first and both have recieved upgrades throughout their lives. The Blackhawk has room for troops but the Lynx is basically a lovely version of a Huey without room for troops. It's never been used for anything other than transporting generals around the UK, or sonar'ing the sea. We keep updating it even though it has no real purpose (edit: except precious export value £££££££)

The full absurdity of it all is explained in Lions, Donkeys and Dinosaurs by Lewis Page. He's an ex Navy officer who left because he couldn't stand the bullshit anymore - a bit like me!

Just finished watching This is England 86 and was really enjoying it for a change - until the last ten minutes. That surprise sex scene just killed all my enjoyment and made me feel like . It wasn't even the fun kind of surprise sex. The most entertaining character is the utterly ridiculous guy in the egg blue ellesse tracksuit, and he never gets enough screen time. I guess he's the counterpoint for all the melancholy in the program. I don't know, to me good TV is something that makes me feel positive.

I think its pretty crap but it's funny to watch the brunette playing up to the cameras and insisting on taking the blonde girl to a sex shop. Also, when has anyone seen a group of 'street' black guys talking about the economy?

So I only just got around to hearing about Outcasts. I'm thinking it has potential, we already know it isn't like the deep so just gotta hope it doesn't end up like Defying Gravity (the last 'epic' BBC sci-fi which nobody else has remembered). Personally I'm pretty pissed there hasn't been a complete serious sci-fi since B5 (haven't seen BSG yet). I would say gently caress the kid too but we seem to have a paedo on the loose...

By the way if anyone remembers the end Ashes to Ashes you may recall that Daniel Mays was 'coincidentally' shooting in South Africa when the last episode aired (to avoid being lynched). Guess this was it!

Edit: Comments on the BBC are great:

"President: We decided to call this planet Carpathia. I can't remember the whole story but I think if they'd had more life boats...
Ship's Captain: We don't have enough life boats!
President: If only the planet namers had spoken to the ship designers..."

"A religious mystic who will no doubt attempt to turn Carpathia into a religious state, a baby whom he would abhor as a product of man's playing at god and the outcasts themselves who could be the salvation or death of the new civilisation "

"So far in the first two episodes 9 of the 10 main characters have either committed murder, attempted murder or conspired in murder. This is not an exaggeration. Of the one main character who has not, he engages in casual sex and takes drugs."

Make the international Iplayer fee $50, and remove the TV licence. I'd say thats fair.

Daimo

At my halls everybody just uses iPlayer and 4OD.

I can see the licence fee model getting dropped though. As people become more tech savvy iPlayer will dominate viewing, but you can't charge subscription fees while the licence is in place.

Its also illogical: $10 per month for TV licence Vs $10 per month for Internet and iPlayer.

There are vast voids of time and space between Dr Who and good sci-fi. It's not like sci-fi is hard to write, there are a lot of good writers out there. It just seems that TV as of late seems to have incompetent writers behind every show and each attempt tries to mix in the modern day generic trash (like methods of storytelling, cliches, etc) that most of the popular shows have and it simply doesnt work because those who like that generic bollocks don't like the sci-fi and those who like the sci-fi don't like that generic bollocks.

It's like most of the modern sci-fi shows have sci-fi in the background with the drama, romance, and everything else as the main driving forces and it should really be the other way around or at least a perfect balance of the two.

edit: Sci-fi shows are best when they bring highly imaginative, unique and creative wonders and stories to the screen; not [stereotypical character conflict] in [half assed sci-fi setting] No. 15.

Hell I tried paraphrasing your post but it's all perfectly pertinent! I agree wholeheartedly with this and its exactly what makes the difference between Star Trek, Dr. Who, Firefly etc and Outcasts.

It's set in America. And Rhys is still in it. I see no possible way that they can handle something like this sensibly. If it's anything like Torchwood/Doctor Who I imagine that people will just keep carrying on their lives and maybe talk about it casually. Anything other than the complete and instant collapse of society would strike me as a massive underreaction.

Its BBC Sci-fi so it'll be about the personal lives and histories of 5 people, completely ignoring the implications for the other 6783323243.
