O wicked spirit born of a lost soul in limbo!

I guess I should start off by saying that SBAllen, the guy that runs the site now, really has very little patience for the message boards and all the drama that transpires there, so he's appointed a few "lead moderators" to run things, and he only steps in when the flamewars on the moderator board get out of control. Two of these lead mods have serious internet power trips and like to think that they are totally in control of everything, and to a certain extent, they are. They pick all the new moderators, they set policy, and they'll internet shun you if they think that you're "fail" (a favorite term tossed around).

Now the leads mods don't actually do too much more than regular mods (just sticky topics and answering a higher level of moderation appeal), but they way they act you'd certainly think otherwise. I was reprimanded once for posting an innocent post on a board I don't have enough karma to post on, but I can since I'm a moderator. My post was deleted and I was threatened with demotion on the grounds that I was "trolling the established userbase". This was just the last straw on top of a pile of things like Skype circlejerks, ridiculous internet flamewars and other things that really killed my motivation.

I still moderate every now and then just to kill some time, and I keep contact with the mods and users who are decent people, but I don't pour nearly as much time into it as I used to.

Moderating seems to be similar on all boards. For a few months I was a moderator for Warhammer Alliance, a big fan forum for that cruddy Warhammer MMO. The number of idiots who took part in forum wars were massive, you'd get trolls making hundreds upon hundreds of accounts and getting through IP bans when it only took about 5 seconds to ban them. Then you'd get the weird 4chaners who got pissy when you closed their guild threads titled "LOLI GUILD" and poo poo like that.

I have to put out an honourable mention to the Something awful trolls we had coming over and flaming us and threatening to take down our site etc. I'm sure board trolling hasn't changed since early 2000 and before, it's still about posting dick girls and goatse with a false sense of originality.

It's tamer than you would expect. Basically, in Pokemon, Skitty (a tiny cat) is able to breed with Wailord (a 47-foot flying whale). The phrase later got extended to any other extreme size differences in mating like that.

The games have Pokemon Breeding and each pokemon has an "egg group" that determines who can breed with who (such as "Plant" pokemon, Mineral, different ocean groups). Most mammals are in the group called Ground, it's the largest out of them. Skitty is a member of this group, as is Wailord (as a mammal) so you can put them into the breeding center and get a skitty or wailord egg. They're in the same group, so the system says "OK". The game doesn't care about the physics of pokemon loving because that's loving weird. So some people like to joke about how that matchup, among others, would be physically impossible.

While it's still pretty nice to be able to find guides for obscure games older than I am, why do the FAQs still have to be enormous text files? They're horrible to navigate on my phone, and dedicated wikis for games are much easier to use. Yes I love digging down to page 436 out of 1,872, past the controls; character descriptions; version history; and everything else that you can find in the instruction manual to find out that I need the red key for this door.

There's even a nearly 3MB FAQ - a text file - for Final Fantasy X. That game barely even needs a guide.

You know, I recognize some of you because I spent a couple of years there too. I quit visiting in 2003 because despite the social boards being fairly decent then, the influx of new users just brought the boards down and turned it into an unstoppable torrent of poo poo. Or maybe it was only good because I was right at the beginning of my teenage years at the time.

And what was it with the forum's extreme Atheist thing? You couldn't even say "f***" - literally, the letter F with three asterisks, but you could religion bash all you want. A lot of people take their religion pretty seriously, and nobody wants some 12 year old stinkyhole calling you out because you casually mentioned somewhere that you believe in God. I don't exactly expect intelligent debate, but come on. "Bitch" is a word that's absolutely forbidden, but disrespecting anything religious is A-OK? Yeesh.

I am currently a co-admin of a private board on the site. I just threw my name in the hat, got picked and still have that status. Dagoth, I'm pretty sure you know me from what I've said because I'm 90% sure I know you.

I don't post much anymore for a lot of reasons that are cited here. The message boards are absolute cesspools in some areas with a couple islands that sane posters have set-up shop in. The Brawl board in particular set a new low in '08 while the private boards that didn't descend into drama are pretty cool. LUE is basically just another social board now, but with a community that is much older and mature after being closed off for so long and LUElinks syphoning the crazies off. Like I said, there are a couple boards that weathered the storm.

It's been almost nine years for me, I guess I just figured if I lasted this long I might as well keep going.

Yeah, if you're familiar with the sperging that happened across the Internet with regards to Brawl (wavedashing and tiers and crap like that) then the GameFAQs Brawl board was ground zero.

LUElinks was a spinoff of the LUE board on GameFAQs after CJayC got so pissed he privatized the board. Basically, he had sign-ups for users in an attempt to stop the insanity spewing from that board. A user named Llamaguy created a spinoff site where users could post links to various sites which could be searched, voted and commented on. I had an account on LUELinks until they had a renovation and when I went to re-register I got locked out. The links were mostly for videos, filez, porn and other stuff. This was before YouTube as well and social networking was in it's infancy. From what I gathered, the boards went to poo poo because all the lunatics from LUE found a home.

The private boards on GameFAQs are boards created by the admins and given to a user. They act as a mini-admin; naming the board, picking a theme if they choose and inviting/booting users to their little board. A co-admin just invites/boots users and nothing more. I mostly became one because I was a member of one, saw the admin was accepting applications and tossed my name in the hate.

If I remember right the owner of GameFAQs referred to LUE as a "cancer" at one point. When the forums here started infecting users it was like deja vu. When I was 14 LUE was pretty profane but in retrospect I don't see how it was even a remotely bad board compared to the rest of the site.
