His idea of alien life is pretty unique, with nearly everything being liquivorious (is that a word?) and using advanced sonar to 'see' their enviroment. All that I needed to keep myself awake at night was the very idea that something unnatural is invading my space and wishes to do something ill to me. I think that is the nature of the idea of being haunted and this series taps into that primal, universal fear of being haunted or watched by something that goes bump in the night.
