Hi my name is Thor you may know me from The Goon Whiteboard and Paulie's training log, or you may have seen me on Tosh.0. http://www.comedycentral.com/videos...nds-to-the-nuts ![]() I used to co-own and operate a warehouse style gym, but my former partner and I didn't see eye to eye on things so I work as a strength trainer at a local crossfit gym now. I live in Eastern North Carolina and I compete in the Highland Games, as well as some other strength competitions. I used to have aspirations to be a top level light weight highland game competitor but I have since gotten quite a bit bigger and heavier so I'm just trying to be good in the normal class. My initial log stats (9/28/10) and Current Age 26 (28) Height 5' 11” (same )Weight 201 lbs (218 lbs (did get as low as 187 at one point)) Initial PR's (9/29/10), and Current PR's in lbs Bench - 235 - (315) +80 Squat - 315 x 3 - (500) +185 Deadlift - 405 - (455) +50 Snatch - 185 - (230) +45 Clean&Jerk - 245 - (295) +50 Strict Press - 165 - (220) +55 Push Press - 205 - (235) +20 Initial Highland Games stats (9/29/10) and Current Braemar Stone - 26'-9.5" (28'-1") Open Stone - 35'-9.5" 56lb for distance - 26'-0" - (30'-5") 42lb for distance - 37'-7" 28lb for distance - 56'-2.5" - (63'-4.5") 22lb Hammer - 68'-9" - (86'-4.5") 16lb Hammer - 91'-4" - (97'-7") 20lb Sheaf - 20'-0" - (24') 16lb Sheaf - 24'-0" - (26') 56lb for height - 11'-0" - (12') 42lb for height - 13'-0" - (14') Caber - I've gotten some 12 o'clocks before Training wise, since I've started this log I have mostly done Starting Strength and its derivatives such as the Texas Method. Which means that my training is a little boring but should be easy to follow. thorbjorn84 fucked around with this message at Dec 28, 2012 around 00:02 |

Thanks SouthShoreSamurai 9/28/10 Did some snatching when Paulie came to the gym just cuz I felt like it 95x3x2 115x3 135x1,1,1 155x1,1,1 165x0,1,1 (all my misses came from the weight being to far forward at the catch) 175x0,0,1 (put oly shoes on, rest was barefoot) Upper body bodybuilding type day I guess Warmup YTWL's and threw a 10lb med ball against a wall a bunch of times Dips BW x5x2 BW+Chain x5x2 (chains were draped over my neck and weigh about 20lbs each) BW+2Chains x5x2 BW+Chain x5 BW x5 Dumbbell Rows 120x10r x8l (adjustable dumbbell broke at the 8th rep with left hand) 100x12e 100x12e Straight Bar Curls (totally did these in the squat rack) 45x12x5 Yoke Walk 255 for 100ft (50 feet down 50 feet back) 345 for 100ft 435 for 100ft (Added belt) 485 for 100ft (dropped it once on the way back) Not a bad day of lifting but nothing special. Sipped on some whole milk during the session then chugged a good amount when I was done, which I do almost every time I workout. Haven't done curls in a good year or so, so 45 lbs was enough for me to get my “swole” on. Ive been thinking that my core strength is hampering me on my deadlifts and squats so I'm planning on doing more yoke and farmers walks in the future and I also need to do more good mornings.

I fully support this thread because Thor is the one who supported me and has beaten the bitch back out of me over the last five months. And his gym is the best gym in this state, hands down. Don't let his looks or words deceive you. Thor is scrappy, but he is also very strong. He just hides it really well.

It took seven strong people to get the thing up there, and afterwards we all felt like we were going to die. I have pictures of some more stuff, just let me get home to find them! 9/30/10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap4B8yVJ-Tc Like last time I did some power cleans today when Paulie came in, cuz I felt like it 135x4 165x3 195x3* 225x2* 225x0 (missed b/c I didn't want to drop under it) 225x1* (said wtf why not mid lift and dropped under it) Did some supplemental tricep kickbacks, worked on getting a good squeeze at the top then about 3 hours later; Squat Day 45x5 95x5 135x5 185x5* 225x5* 275x5* added belt (almost fell backwards on the 4th rep) *these sets are in the video Like a lot of other things I haven't done power cleans in a while so they were a bit sloppy (my back was very rounded on every rep), I need to do them a lot more this off season to help with my throwing. I would have done more poo poo after the squats if I weren't competing on Saturday, I usually do some single leg work after the squats like split squats or reverse lunges and then some back mess like good mornings. I'm gonna take tomorrow off and eat as much as I can so I can get a good mini bloat before the games, the weather is suppose to be nice so that's good. Only thing that sucks is that I'll have to wake up at 5am when I usually wake up around 11:30am. Debating on closing early to try to get some sleep, however FS2D will throw a hissy fit about that if I do.

Meet Results Scotland County Highland Games Open Stone - 33'-0" 56lb for distance - 27'-9" PR 28lb for distance - 53'-4" 22lb Hammer - 65'-6.5" 16lb Sheaf - 24'-0" 56lb for height - No Height, starting height was 12' Caber - 50 Degrees Meet Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdO0DeOPvXI This was my first time competing in the A's,and I got my rear end handed to me but I was expecting that. Overall I'm pretty happy with my numbers, I think I would have done better if I had prepared more. My best event was the 56lb for distance, where I got a 1'9" PR which was nice. I should have done better in the 28lb wfd, I fouled my first throw and felt unbalanced on all 3 throws. Same thing with the hammer, I felt like I could have put a lot more speed and power into it. The open stone was mediocre, I'm still new to spinning (well half spin really) so it was pretty sloppy. The sheaf went pretty well, I was close to clearing 26 ft on my last attempt but it was a tiny bit too low and the aim was off. The weight for height started at 12' which I've never cleared before and still haven't, however, my last attempt was the closest I've ever been to clearing 12'. The caber was long and heavy and kicked my rear end, I had good control with it every time I picked it but either my timing was off or I was just too weak. Overall I'm pretty happy with the meet, I signed up for it last minute and haven't had a throws practice in a while and it showed. I did at least come home with one PR and a fairly substantial one at that. I signed up for another meet on the 24th of this month and I'm 90% sure that I'm gonna go (I haven't gotten a confirmation e-mail yet). I plan on having at least a couple of throws practices before that meet so I can end the season with some descent numbers, and hopefully some new PRs. thorbjorn84 fucked around with this message at Oct 4, 2010 around 22:06 |

After doing the deadlifts unracking 185lb felt like it weighed about 300. I probably went a little too heavy on the speed squats, I let my ego run amok for a bit, but I'll rationalize it by saying my speed off the bottom didn't drop off all that much going from 185 to 225. Ok so here is my little back story into how and why I started my warehouse gym. I went to school to become an Civil Engineer, which was cool for a little while then I got tired of it and started Majoring in Physics, then I realized there was a lot of studying with that so I changed over to Math, same thing there. So I figured that I like working out and I could totally be a personal trainer or a track coach so I changed my major to Exercise and Sport Science. As I was getting ready to finish my degree I was looking around at potential areas to work as a trainer and I wasn't very impressed with any of the gyms in the area. Then I saw a video online by Zach Even-Esh where he was giving a tour of his facility and I though, gently caress I could do that. Now my older brother was also about to finish school with the same degree from the same school and I told him about the idea of starting a place and he wanted in on it. So we decided to try to get a loan and open up our own place. Problem was that no one wanted to loan us any money without any collateral, but we finally got a loan through our parents. Now at first we were looking at small places that had rent that was within 1000 dollars and maybe 1500 sq ft, my brother convinced me we could go bigger since there were two of us working on this, looking back I kinda wish we had started smaller, probably more along the size of Alfalfa's place. We ended up finding a 6000 sq ft facility that used to be a cheer leading place. It had 3 offices, two bathrooms, a nice size lobby area and a huge 5000 sq ft warehouse/gym area. For the equipment we had some stuff that we had collected over the years and we bought as much as we could off craigslist and scoured the internet for deals on bumpers and things like that. Now one of the main things we did to save money was instead of buying racks and prowlers and such I decided to make them myself. I'm pretty handy and figured I could do it, so with almost no welding experience I bought a welder designed a bunch of equipment to see what materials I needed and bought $5000 worth of steel. So far I have made; 3 Collegiate racks modeled after the elite fts racks 2 Prowlers 1 Dip station 1 10inch Log 20' wide Dumbell rack 1 set of Farmers walks 1 thick bar 1 Olympic plate holder 1 Yoke modeled after Sorinexe's Yoke of Goergien A big rear end Pull up Station A bench attachment for the Racks and a Chalk Stand I also have about $1500-2000 worth of steel left I don't know if I would recommend that other people that trying to open their own gym to try this, it took me a LONG rear end time to make that stuff, especially the racks. There was also a lot of trial and error with my fabricating at first. We also made all our own platforms and boxes. We bought the turf used for a dollar a sq ft and got all our mats from Tractor Supply. Getting it ready to open was a poo poo ton of work since most of it was done by my brother and myself, although we had a lot of help from other people. We got the building around November 17th and didn't officially open our doors until March 6th, although we started training people in there before that. Looking back it was a very ballsy thing to open up a huge gym with little prior training experience and no current clients, and on top of that build most of the major equipment myself. Oh yeah and neither of us had our degrees yet when we first started working on it. Here are some pictures of the gym ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The reason for the odd name is that I'm from Iceland and lived there till I was 10. So I pretty much come from the land of strength athletes. I even saw/met Jon Pall Sigmarsson when I was like 6-7 years old, I used to take judo classes with his son. And if you name your son Thor I want you to be aware that for his entire life whenever he meets someone they will ask him "is that your real name?" and then they will tell him "thats the coolest loving name ever" (especially at bars). So if you want that to happen to him then have at it. SouthShoreSamurai posted:How did you go about getting clients? How long before you started to turn a profit? I've been trying everything I can think of to get clients, I've gotten a lot of my friends to become my clients, I've advertized on the radio, used roadside signs, gotten some articles in local magazines, posted fliers on campuses, posted fliers on peoples doors, gotten advertisements in bar/restaurant bathrooms. 10/7/10 Did a bunch of exercises for a video that we showed to the local fire department at a presentation. I'll post the video on here once I finish editing it and put it on youtube. Squats 45x5x2 95x5 135x4 185x3 225x2 275x5x3 After that I taught a strongman conditioning class and since there was an odd amount of people in the class I jumped in on the buddy fire flips. So; Tire Flips 300lbx5x2 600lbx5x2 At the beginning of the day I was thinking about doing some power cleans after the squatting but I was dead after all of this so I called it a day. 10/8/10 warmup ytwl's Threw 10lb med ball a lot Incline log press w/10 inch log (the bench is about 45 degrees with the log sitting on the pins which are at chest level) 105x5 125x5 145x5 165x5 185x5 Pull ups BWx6x4 Superset Strict log press & Pendlay rows Log 125x5 135x3 145x3 added belt 155x2 (failed on the 3rd like a little bitch) Rows 135x8x3 155x8 My pressing felt like poo poo, come to think of it everything felt like poo poo. I've been going pretty consistently heavy for the last 6-8 weeks or so, so I think I'm due for a little bit of deloading. I also need to change my program around a bit. I've been on a Rippetoe kick lately and kind of want to incorporate more if his methods into my workouts, hence the 275 squat for 3 sets of 5 yesterday. On the business end of things we are still pretty slow. I did however run into the captain of the ECU (The University in town) club rugby team at bar and talked to him about having their team train at my gym. I had sent him a message about it a couple months back and he had apparently checked out our site and our videos but assumed we would be too expensive, which I assured he we weren't. So hopefully we will set something up with them. Also one of my brothers new clients is a guy that used to own and run an indoor baseball training center thing thats in town but owns the local state farm insurance agency now. He really likes our setup and is eager to help us out anyway he can so we are gonna have a meeting with him next week and let him drop some much needed knowledge right on our loving faces.
