My favorite RPG of all time is probably Dragon Warrior Monsters for the game boy color. It was like Pokemon in that you catch monsters and level them up but they were all the old Dragon Warrior ones instead, fought in three-on-three battles and best of all could be bred into other monsters. The breeding trees were super complex and most of the fun in the game was trying to breed the biggest badasses of each monster type. It was super grindy but a ton of fun. I tried playing the recent DS game and just couldn't get into it, it wasn't the same.

Thanks to this thread I just started on Exit Fate and I have to say this is the best RPG Maker game I've ever played, at least so far. I dunno if SCF is reading this thread but mad props for making this thing and I really look forward to getting into it.

edit: maybe the best part of the game is the writing. The main character's intelligent and charismatic and all the supporting characters have their own touches of personality too. The story's also really good.

There's really a pretty decent shortage of sci-fi rpgs in general. Mass Effect, Star Ocean (meh), Xenogears/saga ...

Don't forget KOTOR 1 and 2! People always forget that they're still sci-fi RPGs even if they're Star Wars. But yeah, after that it's pretty slim pickings.

Have you played Titan Quest? It's a pretty good Diablo-like based around Greek mythology. Pretty cheap now on steam too.

Yeah Mass Effect 2 is the "better" game but they're both really good and worth playing. I found Mass Effect 1 a little difficult to get into and even put it down for about a year after barely getting far at all, but once I committed to pushing through it I found it really engaging and fun.

Hey here's a question. Are there any more RTS-RPG games out there like Warcraft III? I always thought it was awesome to build an army around one buff unit and level him up. I remember there was that Dragonshards game but I heard it wasn't great so I never played it. Is it worth checking out and is there anything else like that?

I've been playing Warlords: Battlecry III and it's really fun, pretty much exactly what I was looking for as far as an RPG-RTS hybrid goes. I'll try the Spellforce games next. Are any of the Warlords games themselves worth checking out? I understand they're turn-based and the description sounds pretty close to the HOMM games.

I'd never played Final Fantasy 7 past the first disc, but this time I think I'm ready to give it another shot. What's the best Final Fantasy 7 experience out there, PS1 disc via my PS2, or a PC version with my xbox controller?

Yeah the bad loot's the biggest thing I didn't like about Dragon Age too. In BG2 I was always motivated to explore that extra nook and cranny on the off-chance that I would find some crazy good spell or armor. In Dragon Age I just remember the lovely armor piling up to the point that I didn't even want to loot most enemies anymore.

What about the Dragon Quest Monsters DS games? Should I even bother since I've never touched DQ?

I spent weeks of my life on the first two, and yes the second one is a huge improvement over the first. I never played the DQ games before I played DWM 1 and 2, there's not much story to either game and it's mostly about battling and breeding up your monsters. Can't speak to the DS games much, I played a little of the first DS game and it was enjoyable.

It's one of the few JRPGs that got ported over to the PC in recent years. It's the only big-budget one I can think of anyway.

IWD2 is a great game. The best of the infinity engine combat, too.

Would you recommend skipping IWD 1 to play this (in the same vein that you can skip BG1 and go straight to the much improved BG2)?

Plan is this:
Vita: FF 1 to 10-2 (except 5 & 6) and CC
NES: DQ 1-3
DS: DQ 4-6 (DS slot), FF 5-6 and Mother 1 & 3 (GBA slot in original DS)
PC: FF XIII trilogy
I'll figure out the rest when I cross that bridge.

Since you have the DS you should really put Chrono Trigger on your list, especially as it looks like you're thinking about playing Chrono Cross too. I would say play it first because it's really a can't-miss game, but if you play it first you'll inevitably be let down by anything else so keep that in mind. Don't get Chrono Trigger on PSN because it comes with horrific load times for everything (including looking at the menu... ugh).

Is there anything released recently with gameplay like Dragon Warrior/Quest Monsters, where you collect and breed a bunch of monsters into progressively more badass characters? Pokemon never scratched the same breeding itch for me and I've played the latest DQM (Joker 2) to death.

Are you asking besides SMT games?

I've never linked them to DQM before but yeah, they are pretty similar. I played them all besides the new SMT4. They're fun but I've never felt the same about the demons as I do about the monsters in DQM. My Persona/SMT demons always felt very disposable compared to the DQM guys, even if I probably went through them at the same rate. I also kinda like the grindy nature of DQM raising my monsters from scratch and always having to balance breeding a new one with the power drop my team hits. In SMT that's never an issue since demons come out of fusions already stacked with levels.

Zore posted:

How recent are we talking and how much do things like plot and presentation matter?

I started with the original DQM so don't care much about plot or presentation. "Recent" being in the last few years I guess.

I haven't played Siralim so I'll certainly check that out, and I have both a PS4 and Vita so I'll look into Digimon Cyber Sleuth too.

Yeah. It's my favorite game of all time and there's nothing else comparable.

I remember there was someone trying to make an OB64 alike but last I checked it was a year ago and it was still a work in progress.

For me, Skyrim's difficulty was frustrating for the first ~ten hours as a sneaky character, where 80% of encounters were trivial and the other 20% were nigh-impossible, and then just became 100% trivial. (Not even using any particularly clever mechanics besides, like, poisons.)

What did you end up doing about dragons? I made it to about level 40 or 50 as a sneaky guy and felt this way about anything that wasn't a dragon, but any time I fought a dragon I'd get a good chunk of their health down with the sneak attack and then I wouldn't have anything too great to follow up with.

Even the regular slots are a lot better than Slime Quest. You'll go token positive playing Slime Quest and your token gains will go up the longer you play, but eventually you will run out of Slime Quest spins. Regular slots will lose you tokens faster but if you can hit a combination of free spins and metal spins you stand to make a good chunk of tokens.

Don't worry about breaking the game by cheesing the casino, it's basically in the game for you to cheese. The casino equipment will carry you for a while but not forever. Honestly I'm pretty sure save scumming your way to a fortune in DQ casinos is the intended way to play.

they should start making remasters of the earlier games. Would love a modern DQ7-8 remake to bite into

I'm a few pages late to this but most of the DQ games are on mobile and run pretty well if you can stand to use touch controls to move. 1-3 are the same versions the Switch got, 4-6 are the DS remasters. Don't play mobile 8, find a 3ds instead.
