So I missed this weekend's game (funeral) and am going to miss next month's game(wedding), so the offseason started last week for me. It kinda sucks going from a bout every other week to nothing for eight months. Basically the offseason blows.

I just posted something important (to me) on my blog. I'd like to know what you guys think about this. Your post really rubbed me the wrong way I'll admit. What I got from it was that you can only be having fun if you're winning, and if you're having fun and not winning, then you aren't serious and you don't care about the sport. If every skater out there was out there purely for the party, why would they pour in hours and hours into practices and committees and building and running their own goddamn league on top of work and school and family. These girls don't have the luxury of focusing their entire lives on derby, unlike those professional athletes that most of your examples consisted of, who train their entire lives and still train to win. Because that is THEIR JOB. I can't begrudge Texas their attitude after the tournament. In my experience, when I play, my team always wants to win of course! Sometimes if we lose, we are disappointed! Sometimes we lose, and dammit the game was still fun and usually those are games where we did work our asses off and at the same time we're usually learning a lot! If I feel like we lost because my team didn't put 110% out there, then yeah I'm going to be disappointed. You talk about derby culture being about 'fun and partying,' and while that's true to an extent, I see the 'fun and partying' as a facet of what I would consider 'derby sisterhood.' Because we're all pouring the same blood, sweat, and tears on the track and we all have to make the same sacrifices in order to do so. Yeah there's the parties and the fun, and there are instances where derby girls will come together to help another. Like Tequila Mockingbird. Like a skater in a nearby league who died from complications from childbirth. Why derby has this while (in my opinion), no other sport does, I'm not really sure. Maybe it's the afterparties since we get to know the people we've been playing against. I'm not convinced I really articulated my point very well but I guess what I'm trying to say is that having fun and enjoying the social aspect of derby doesn't mean a skater isn't serious and doesn't care about the sport at the same time.

Bruised Boutique has fresh meat packages which are pretty good, if you're looking for that. Skates - I don't know, I started on Riedell 265's with the Powerdyne Triton plate as my "newbie skate". That said, the Riedell 265/Triton is not a newbie skate, and it was like, $400 with plate/boot. I've heard R3's are good, and the Sure-Grip Rebels are good. People in CNYRD skate them, and I haven't heard anything bad beyond "these skates don't fit me", which is more of a sizing issue than a skate boot issue. We put all of our newbies in R3's the first time they show up and don't have skates. I'm currently in Antik AR-1's with a Powerdyne Reactor plate, which for comparison, is like Wheels - There's three real things in a wheel - height of the wheel, width of the wheel, and hardness of the wheel. In the past year, I've spent way too much money on wheels searching for the perfect ride. I've used: Radar Tuners(93a), Radar Flat Outs(88a), Atom Poison Slims(84a), Atom Juke 2.0's(93a, 95a, and 97a), and Atom Venoms(84a). Wheel hardness - The optimal/best wheel for derby really depends on the surface you're skating on and your personal preference of how much grip you actually want to have on the floor. A hard wheel on a slick surface will make you slide out like crazy, and a soft wheel on a hard surface will make it feel like you're skating on mud, slowing you down and making you have to expend more effort to be able to skate. This is obviously a Bad Thing when you are trying not to be out of breath after one jam. More or less, it goes like this, from a hardness perspective, going from soft to hard:
The next list my personal opinion on what hardness of wheel I have to ride in each scenario to be able to do what I need to do as a jammer(skate like an rear end in a top hat) and not have to second-guess my footing(which is really loving bad if you need to have power off of one wheel and that one wheel slips). What I actually ride is in parenthesis.
When in doubt, go softer, skate a while, and then go harder if you think it will work. As far as wheel wideness goes, the wider the wheel is, the harder it is going to be to pick the wheel off of the ground with the benefit of having more wheel on the ground. More wheel = more grip most of the time. I've had anywhere from 44mm to 38mm wide wheels. Most of my wheels are of the thinner variety. There are a few 36mm and 32mm wide wheels, but I don't think they fit my next criteria. Wheel height - I'm gay for 59mm wheels. Most wheels come in 62mm sizes. The taller a wheel is, the more speed you get out of it, since one revolution of the wheel covers more distance in the same time as a smaller wheel. However, you give up mobility to do it. So in derby terms, blockers tend to use slower, softer, wider, taller, grippier wheels for stability, and jammers tend to use faster, harder(as hard as possible without sliding everywhere, ideally), thinner, smaller wheels for mobility and acceleration. Bearings - I like my Kwik ABEC-9's. They're semi-cheap(like 36$ last time I checked), roll pretty smooth and fast, and don't give out easy. I'm looking at Bones Swiss Ceramic Labyrinths, but yeah, gently caress spending 200$ on bearings.

I think the only factor you forgot to mention is skater weight. A lighter skater will need grippier wheels compared to a heavier skater, all else equal. I haven't attempted to run the math on ceramic bearings but from my research I would spend money on nice boots and plates and leave the 200 dollar bearings for your last possible bit of improvement. And of course the most important gear will always be practice and dedication.

My dream setup at the moment is a Bont Quad Racer Carbon made from a cast of my foot. The compromise is the same boot made from a tracing. I'm not sure what I'd do for a plate, yet. Arms at a 45 degree angle to create a cross with the blocker next to you but not to constitute a multiplayer block. Whistle blows, whistle blows twice for jammer start(no pack), they stand, four wall completely fucks the other team's jammer while the other team really can't do poo poo about it. The other team skating forward/starting on the pivot line(making the back blockers out of play) to no-pack it causes a person in the four wall to move up to bridge. The team in front 95% of the time is in a lose-lose situation, before the jam even starts. A+ would watch again(for an entire game or two). The booing was fantastic, and quite frankly its hilarious to see "OH GOD BUMRUSH THE JAMMER LINE". Also, I like your pack re-definition, reminds me of old school roller derby. The only thing that people are going to make a stink about is the runaway pussy/pack lapping that you cover. Right, which is why I pointed out that that could be a "problem" with my idea. But that's not a problem with the rules. It's a problem with the people who'd complain about it. And much is the point of my post, the question needs to become why would they complain about it? If the rules are the same for everyone, but a subset of skaters don't like the rules, then that can only mean those that are complaining are a bunch of pussies who really don't want to be athletes. downtimejesus posted:The booing was fantastic, and quite frankly its hilarious to see "OH GOD BUMRUSH THE JAMMER LINE". Another thing about my rules: Should they be implemented, the bumrush would be for the pivot line instead. And hey, what-do-you-know: There are already rules in place for the lineup sequence in the rulebook! Pivots on the start line, blockers line up behind them. Funny how all of this makes sense, isn't it? ed- Probably the only way to prevent the lap-around situation from happening is to start thinking about making jam time shorter. Maybe we can do 90 second jams, or a 60 jam in which the jam clock does not start until a jammer gets out of the pack (like in old school rules). Honestly, the lap problem wouldn't even matter, since duh, if you lap the people, you just expended a lot of effort to position yourself behind the other team, gaining you no tactical advantage since your jammer probably passed people who were out of play. If you have a powerjam and the other team books, yeah, duh, you hosed up and probably don't deserve to score any points. Perhaps if one team laps the other, the jam is called? Makes sense, since the team doing the lapping is dominant in this situation, and lapping really would only be done as a defensive thing. As an aside, this problem already exists as seen in that one jam where all the blockers lined up behind the jammers(I forget which game it was, its irrelevant). Maybe a penalty for exiting the engagement zone through the front and then re-entering it from the rear? Who knows. (though the slow team could draw penalties by slowing to a crawl and letting the other team re-engage) Basically, this scenario fucks everything up. Also, as an aside, I like the WORD rule where if one team gets lead jam, the other team's pivot is eligible to jam, and they just gun it. downtimejesus fucked around with this message at Sep 15, 2011 around 17:27 |

Another common sense thing, though: Why would you spend all of that effort and energy to hold a dead-sprint for upwards of a minute if the other team has stopped trying to chase? The further back they fall, the less sense it makes for the team pulling away to keep pulling away for no reason. That would just tire them out and give them problems later in the game. You could just hold that pullaway 20 feet ahead of the other team, since that's the fringe that they would be considered in or out of play at. If team ahead's jammer comes back in and starts getting blocked by the team behind at the 20 foot fringe, the team ahead can just skate forward and make them out of play. ...much how like teams now are holding behind and waiting for the team ahead to go past the 10-foot fringe and put themselves out of play, giving a free pass to their jammer. It's starting to freak me out, how much sense I'm making here.

Yeah, even though it doesn't make sense to do so, there has to be something covering it if it happens. It doesn't really make sense to start on your knee either, and that eventually happened. I think "if an entire team laps another team, the jam is dead" works, since it penalizes the other team for not blocking the lapping team, while rewarding the lapping team. It probably would only be used as you said, if your jammer is in the box. This is a good video for your grand slam section(even though it is pretty grand in a kind of way). It's Jurasskick Park(PVRD's Dirty Dozen) scoring 45 points in a jam: http://www.justin.tv/pvrd/b/290405632And, the runaway pussy argument is the classic "scrub" rule from Playing to Win: http://www.sirlin.net/articles/play...win-part-1.html , so really it's a lovely argument. downtimejesus fucked around with this message at Sep 15, 2011 around 17:46 |

You and I both know that with higher stakes, teams will start pushing loopholes as far as they can go. I also fully expect teams (especially Gotham and Philly) to start doing some batshit crazy insane poo poo during starts. I'm just preparing everyone for what is an inevitability they have no idea is coming. Here's my prediction: Based off of Gotham's first-half tactics against Philly at ECDX, they are completely willing to go through a non-jam to stake a claim to their jam start dominance. So much like you said, they'll probably start figuring out how to do knee-starts during power jams in such a way where their jammer can immediately go across the line and be lead jammer the second she hits the pivot line. I hope they do it every time, because then people will start realizing there is no possible counter to the play...except to start committing "strategical" penalties.

Wait, why did Dutchland forfeit? (edit: found it http://derbynewsnetwork.com/2011/09...feits_1e_gotham) Wow. Even if it does improve their end tournament ranking, so much of derby ranking is subjective that it seems a longterm bad decision. Not knowing anything about the personalities involved, I wonder how the Dutchland organization as a whole feels about this. If they came up with a decision democratically or Merv the Perv making an executive decision based on I do own a Dutchland Rollers t-shirt and I'm not sure whether I should now wear it feeling partial shame or, instead, crippling shame. Also, go CRG!!
