I'm fairly sure the demo is from an older version of the codebase which apparently got some performance patches. I'm not sure though.

Cyberboard is probably a better bet. VASSAL, while more modern, doesn't have as good support for cards and the like.

If you want multiplayer ASL on the computer you really want VASSAL. There are a whole bunch of non-ASL board wargames that have modules for it. While the site's community is dead, Consimworld is the best place to look for opponents.
