Also i found the Funny or Die video to be hilarious, in the same style or vain of "Hot rear end beat clap". My last piece to offer is this amazing bible by which i accidentally stumbled upon, thought you guys might appreciate it, http://sibatmedia.wordpress.com/201...olf-gang-bible/

Syd was supposed to guest DJ at Low End Theory the other night. Right before her set, Nobody played 'gently caress the Club Up', everybody did, and Syd's laptop got smashed. So OF got up on stage and put on a show instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJi3zuTfO1g

So Pitchfork has up a review for Frank Ocean's album that gives a lot of interesting background on Frank that I hadn't heard mentioned anywhere before. Apparently he's actually written songs for Justin Bieber; I wonder if that's how Tyler ended up meeting him?

I've been following these guys for a little while but not really closely. Tyler is so good that it's making me skeptical. Tell me he's not some rich kid from LA whose parents could afford to pay for an expensive producer, right? I mean, it's good either way, of course. But it's just too good, it doesn't make sense.

That would be pretty pointless imo.

Believe it or not, there are startlingly young kids out there with massive production talent. The software's so cheap these days, they come out of the woodwork early. More power to them.

This pretty much. If Earl can write lines like he does at 16 Tyler and Hodgy and them can write beats at 18+. Also I really dislike that video of the acoustic version of sandwiches. It sounds bad and it seems like the definition of the whole "lol we're white so this is funny/ok for you to listen to" thing that's been discussed here a few times. There's nothing new or funny about playing rap/hip-hop songs on acoustic guitar, so why not just play it straight and not as a gimmick? It just comes off as lame/a little bit racist.

It helps if you just look at it as some guys having fun and showing appreciation for music they like. There's nothing wrong with that, even if the gimmick they employed is tired. I mean, that still doesn't make it good, but whatever. I doubt it was conceived as a serious artistic undertaking or musical statement. They're still better than literally every pony-tailed acoustic guitar playing douchebag ever. If you want to talk about tired gimmicks, there's one for you.

Completely true. I think the skepticism comes from people not realizing there are all types of black dudes out there, with all types of different interests and lifestyles. I've known a few lower middle class black skater-punks and computer nerds. They just usually aren't beasts on the mic.

Ok I just rewatched it and figured out the thing I actually have wrong with the video is the faces of the guy playing guitar and the one singing. Towards the end of the video they seem to be respecting the song so that's cool. I guess where I'm coming from is that I play a lot of open mic nights and stuff and I really like to play hip-hop and rap, but it's disheartening when the person before you did their "hi-larious" rendition of a rap song or even says flat out "I decided to make this song good". cardedagain posted:it's so bad, that it only makes sense that Tyler personally likes it.

That's one of the things I'm worried about with all the attention Tyler gets-there's a chance everyone else gets overshadowed or branded a certain way when for the most part they can stand on their own as artists.

And I agree 100% with what your saying, also when you get put on your supposed to spread the love to your people who helped you get there and were with you from the start.

Nah, I'm not saying Tyler's not doing his part. But because of his subject matter and all the stuff around him, the press is definitely moving in that direction. People talk a lot about OF being nothing but horrorcore or w/e when outside of Tyler and some of Earl's stuff the topics are really just regular stuff. I'm just wondering how long before Tyler has journalists calling him Odd Future a la Darius Rucker and Hootie.

IM DAY DAY IRL posted:He'll probably get that the same amount of times that RZA got called Wu-Tang. I'll approach this like an actual serious comment and point out that those are totally different situations. RZA never had a solo album (iirc he just had a couple singles as Prince Raheem, and that was way before Wu anyways) and most of the Wu were also signed to solo deals when they were starting to break (that was one of the things he negotiated with Loud was the ability for each artist to find their own solo deal). Also RZA had much less of a vocal presence in comparison. I know Questlove was called "Roots" early on in their career (hell Razeel calls him that on some song on Do You Want More), on top of the aforementioned Darius Rucker. Coupled with the lack of separation of most discussion of OF and Tyler, and yes my slightly tongue in cheek comment could end up being accurate.
