Carl FTWinslow posted:They rap too much about surprise sex and that's something nobody should support because it's not funny or interesting. I'm all for 'rawness' and pushing the lyrical envelope but I draw the line at surprise sex. I doubt any of them have raped a girl. I don't think they are actively supporting the idea of raping girls.

The people who are going to end up raping somebody are likely going to do so regardless of what OFWG spits. Rap glorifies other reprehensible things such as murder and greed. People are going to be murderous and greedy regardless.

Any comments on the recent B.O.B. diss? I been a BOB fan since before OF was on the scene and I think he's dope despite his "sellout"-ish album so I'm not taking sides. But I think the diss track is dope. I like how it's reaction is kind of like "whoa i didn't know this dude could actually spit." Anyone who has paid any real attention to Bobby knew that. But still I can't consider it a real-rear end diss because he didn't make specific statements other than using the word "future"

Jirolico posted:Earl and Tyler are considered the best rappers in OF, hands down, but which members of OF are closest to their level? From what I've heard, Mike G, Hodgy and Domo Genesis seem to have the skill and flow there, but not so much the Tyler/Earl level of genius creativity. I'm not so much sold on Jasper the Dolphin or Taco. Frank Ocean is a good addition. Sometimes it's tough keeping everyone's voices and names together. One thing is for sure though, I definitely miss Earl's verses on Goblin. I think Earl is the best in terms of pure rapping/emceeing ability, followed by a pretty close second which is a tie between Hodgy and Tyler. I think the idea that Tyler is a better rapper than Hodgy is a myth. Tyler is probably a better storyteller and more prominent, but Hodgy is good at making a less conceptual/story-driven song and just making a regular rap tune. edit: btw, love the album so far, I like the non-traditional song structures and off-kilter production. Both of which I feel like rap could use a healthy dose of, which it is getting.

Jirolico posted:How does Mike G's mixtape stack-up versus Earl's and Domo's? Alot of Mike G's raps sound a lot more amateurish compared to Earl's and even Domo's, but thats not so bad because he doesn't try to do anything too crazy and he's been getting a bit better since Ali edit: Done with the album. Overall really good, about what I expected from Tyler with some pleasant surprises. It is a nice continuation of Bastard's themes with some other subject matter added on that doesn't feel tacked on. I think this puts Tyler in a pretty good place to grow and do some different type of shiz now that he got a lot of surprise sex shoot kill/therapist rhymes out of the way. x TOMMYBOY x fucked around with this message at May 8, 2011 around 05:38 |

I don't know if he's so much challenging it in the larger political sense as in a personal sense. As far as the "homophobic" jokes go, that doesn't come off as homophobic to me just regular ol' funny. Then again, I am only 19 which is not too far from your standard of 15.

Ugh. some of you people are fools and some of you are overanalyzing fools.Sharks Eat Bear posted:offensive or not, people actually think the line, "I'm not homophobic, enjoyable human being" is funny? ugh it's not just supposed to be purely "ha ha ha ha ha ha OMG HAHAHAHAH" funny. its kind of a statement that just because you say a word doesn't necessarily mean you are something else, in this case a homophobe or whatever. its about Tyler's philosophy "do what the gently caress you want...i'm a loving unicorn." It is about being "radical" and extreme because you feel like expressing yourself that way, not holding back because people will call you juvenile or homophobic. of course this something a lot of people lose as they age, this whole album is a statement on that you guys think "her" is reminiscent of a Usher song? besides the fact that Ocean sounds a little like Usher (like a lot of singers nowadays) it isn't really like an Usher song at all. even if o'reilly is an easy target he is still a very prominent rear end in a top hat so i don't mind him being called out again. guy is a fuckface and deserves to be called out until he is a dead man. that's all.

snyprmag posted:This is a theme in modern hip-hop and r&b that's a lot bigger than just the two of them. The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Drake (maybe, just the impression i've gotten from the bit of his i've listen to) touch on this a lot. Exactly. And really a lot of Ocean's stuff centers on emotion without relating to the theme of drug-use explicitly, whereas cudi will straight up mention weed and other stuff. The only song I can think of that has a lot of drug references by Ocean is Novacane, and the only references are to the title drug and a "ice blue bong" or whatever. Ocean I feel like is what Trey Songz would sound like if he mellowed out a bit and liked Death Cab For Cutie a lot more. Kid Cudi uses a little bit more played out imagery also, "in the shadows of the darkness of my room" from Maniac sounds lyrically like some poo poo Linkin Park would've done on their first album. Not that I don't enjoy a little Cudi, but I wouldn't have ever made that connection if you hadn't mentioned it and I think for good reason.

Well I don't know. I don't laugh at them but I appreciate the fact that they say poo poo like that. Definitely not because surprise sex is cool, but because I feel the concept of saying whatever the gently caress you want should be more important than it is. Sometimes expression is not actually evidence of motive and in those cases it should be protected. I'm not sure that made sense
