Probably because 2+ years ago they couldn't say for certainty that that's how any possible future export would be handled.

Are song ratings per-console or per XBL account? Can my wife rate songs differently than I do?

Per account. It might be a bit confusing on the song selection screen, because it'll only show the rating of the band you're currently playing under, but after every song each band member can enter their own ratings.

If you ("you" as in "your Gamertag") are playing bass, you can accomplish bass goals, which means you can unlock stuff from those goals.

So I'm sure this has been discussed already but I haven't seen it anywhere:

Is there going to be a Pro Bass? Like, with four strings spaced correctly for a bass guitar? I play a little bass, and I have to say playing a bass part on a guitar just feels weird and wrong. The strings are much too small and you constantly activate the upper two guitar strings that don't exist on bass. If they made one I think I would probably buy it.

Doubt it. For one, Pro Guitar market > Pro Bass market, probably by quite a bit. Two, a four string bass means you're essentially locked out of being able to play any bass that uses 5+ strings (which would mean when that Primus DLC shows up odds are you're boned). You could make the same argument for guitar, since 7-string guitars surely exist, but would it be as big of a problem as on the bass...?

So, how's everybody doing the rating system? This is what I came up with, focusing on party play with big groups of people.

***** Songs - The BEST Rock Band songs top to bottom, the most fun. Don't look at having more than 20 songs in this if even that.
**** Songs - My personal picks and personal favorites
*** Songs - Party songs/Songs that EVERYBODY should know
** Songs - Good songs that not everybody knows
* Songs - poo poo.
Unrated - Clutter/Bands with a deeper catalog/I don't have an opinion

Hopefully this should kill off the buzzkill of the huge playlist in Rock Band 2 that ends up being a scrolling match for 10 minutes straight and then everybody loses interest.

I thought originally if you marked a song with only a 1 star rating, that it kind of puts it into purgatory, like it doesn't show up in random playlists and such. Is that a fact?

Working backwards: 1-lighter songs should never (or almost never) show up in Random setlists.

How I rate (keep in mind these are heavily skewed towards guitar since that's what I play):

5* - I will never complain about "having" playing this song (25 or 6 to 4)
4* - I enjoy listening to the song and probably playing it (Centerfold)
3* - I don't hate it, but there's certainly better (Rock Lobster)
2* - I'll only play this if someone else picks it (Walkin' on the Sun)
1* - If I'm at home, it's banned. If I'm not, I'm leaving the room. (Free Bird)

apophenium posted:

One thing I want to understand about the rating is if it's per-instrument. Like, The Beautiful People is awful on keyboards (it's not much fun on anything else, I'm just using it as an example) so I gave it 1 lighter. But if I like to play it on drums can I give it 4 lighters on drums?

One rating per song per profile. I kind of wish they were per instrument too, but could see how it'd get confusing.

Do they have a 'beginner' difficulty mode where it doesn't matter what buttons/colors you are pressing when you strum/hit a note?

My kids are very young and want to play but it's pretty frustrating for them to try to hold the specific color down when they play a note so they lose interest quickly.

I know I can turn on no fail, but it sucks to have all their audio drop out due to missed notes.

That's the one thing i liked about what the GH series did later on.

Also, the Roadrunner Records pack, although it's listed as "already in library" wants me to purchase it again rather than download again. It even gives me "You already own this DLC, do you really want to pay for it again?"

There was some legal fracas with that pack and "Running Wild" got pulled from the pack and as a single completely. The 6 song pack (which you bought) is no longer available in the marketplace, only the 5 song pack (which it is asking you to buy).

Not sure if there's a workaround for this, besides manually transferring the old pack from your old HD and onto the new one.

On top of what MBAG said, RB2/3 drums don't feel like you're hitting rocks and the pedal has a metal plate on it. $130 might be worth it, but it's your call.

Anyone buying a $200+ pro guitar should be aware that they are a niche market and may not be pandered to forever. That's the way of the world.

To play devil's advocate, at least with the pro guitars, one still works as a 5-button controller, and the other is a fully-functional six-string guitar. The stage kit? Well, you can use it as a controller...with no shoulder/trigger buttons or analog sticks...that could blind you while playing because the lights are controlled via force feedback info...

Just imagine the bitching that'd occur if the stage kit did work. You'd get the current level of bitching seen now because it wouldn't work in All Instruments Mode combined with all of the bitching about the necessity of All Instruments Mode. I too have a tree. Currently stores my Strat replica and Rickenbacker and (hopefully soon) my Mustang. The nice thing about the one I have is that the bottom support is supposed to rest on the back of a full-size guitar, so it'll support the Strat and Mustang just fine, and the Rickenbacker can lie on top of it without posing a problem since it's much lighter than the other two.
