Over the summer I've been getting way into the pinball in my area. Fortunately the barcade near me has JackBot, Addams family, and a bunch of other machines. Now that this thread has introduced me to Pinball Arcade I guess I don't have to blow my money over there as often. If I just want to buy one season, which one gives me the most bang for my buck?

e) Also is there really any value in picking up the Pro pack compared to the Table pack?

Okay that's good to know, thanks. I'm going to grab Seasons one and two since they are on sale on steam and seem to be the best value.

Unrelated side question: Is there any online database about where pinball machines are around the United States? I've got Pinball Map on my phone but its got nothing for my local area.

Season 2 is good too. I got it for $15 last year and it's been worth it for White Water and Terminator alone.

White Water is probably my overall favorite out of Season 2. It just seems to flow extremely well, especially when it came to getting multiballs and combos.

Last night I went to a place and played some newer tables for the first time. I really enjoyed the Lord of the Rings pro, but found the Metallica game to be completely lacking. Am I just missing something when it came to Metallica? I was just having a hard time getting into it. Party Zone was really goofy and fun, it was obviously done by the same people who did Dr. Dude and his Excellent Ray.

I really like Metallica! You gotta know its rules though. There ain't a lot of cash to make crazy toys and layouts now, so when they finally finish the code that's when the game is at its best. The little mini wizard Turn It Up modes in Metallica are really fun.

It might have been that it was the most expensive machine at the bar (75 cents compared to the regular 50) so I just had this underwhelmed sensation when I was done. I just kept hitting it into the snake and bouncing it around thinking "is this it?" I think I might just be spoiled by Addams Family and other machines.

I love the Addams Family machine but the power is the absolute worst. Whenever it turns on it just turns the game into survival mode instead of being about scoring points. I think I'm just a little bitter after having one too many balls flung into the outlanes without being able to do anything to stop it. Don't mind me, I'm just bitter.

That GoT game is so ugly. I see what they are going for in the regular edition but it just seems like a waste of space when they could have done something more creative with it. And that art, ugh talk about missed potential.

Saw a Stern's pirates of the Caribbean out in the wild. I'd never played that table before (looks loaded with dumb gimmicks) and wanted to give it a go. It was slanted to hell and back and wouldn't accept my quarters. It might not be a good machine, but it sucks that I couldn't even give it a shot.

Yeah Red can be some instant death. I have a terrible luck of getting the ball stuck on the second left flipper and having it go straight down the drain. The whole game is a death trap but it is so fun even if their voices get a bit annoying.

Yeah pinball seems to go for the gusto at times with "sexy" art and it usually ends up just looking gross. Fortunately none of them are as bad as that. Although things like the graphically accurate stagegirl jiggle in High Roller Casino at the end is always offputting whenever I see it.

Today I played in my first local tournament! I ended up getting Best Novice Player, which I am really happy with. Out of the tables I was only really familiar with about half of them and there were some serious players there from all around NC. My favorite thing was really crushing it on Attack From Mars and just chaining a few multiballs. However I don't really want to play Judge Dredd again for a while. I don't know if it is just a dark table to begin with but everyone was having an extremely hard time seeing what was going on. Also the barcade's version of Scared Stiff broke a round into the tournament because someone was being too rough with it.

Overall I had a great time with it, but some of the players were not exactly professional with their play. The barcade is open to all ages on Sundays, and there were some teenagers playing in the tournament. It just made me uncomfortable that some people were dropping fucks right and left right next to a kid and flipping off the machine when they lost a ball. Its one thing to be emotional about your play, but some of the stuff I saw I felt was over the line especially since some of the worst behavior came from the person who ended up winning ( and especially since it was a charity event). But even jerks couldn't put a damper on how fun the day was. Now I have my eyes set on prepping for the next tournament in November. I'm hooked.

Licensing issues might be the reason we wouldn't see it. You'd have to license Striker (who owns that mutt, anyway? FIFA? Warner Bros. - who designed him? U.S. Soccer?), and you'd probably have to license the '94 World Cup as well, which probably is a problem... probably.

FIFA will probably need the money for legal fees soon anyway.

So after spending the weekend playing around with No Fear, I'm also not a huge fan. There just doesn't seem to be much to do with the table. It also seems to dump it down that right outlane pretty badly.

It's in a nearby state that doesn't have as strong as a community, so if I did alright and went to a few more I might be able to swing going to their state championships at the end of the year. its a bit of a commitment, but I just did well in a tourney this weekend and I'm seriously contemplating it.

It's not very good.

X-Files is from a period where Sega (now Stern) was pretty much hosed in terms of their budget and the designs were as stripped down as they possibly could be. Licences were the only thing that could possibly float them.

Which is really too bad. I wish they could make a new X-Files table that really incorporates the whole series. Abduction multiball with a lot of flashing lights a la Strobe multiball from Attack From Mars or Winter Is Coming.

What are some of your dream pinball themes? I always thought that Pee Wee's Playhouse really would make an amazing table. Dancing puppets. Jambi callout shouts. It just seems like the nature of the art would lend really well to a pinball aesthetic.

About Dracula on the Pinball Arcade- it sure does love the left outlane. But when you can get a really good game going with multiple bats it is just so satisfying.

Magic Hate Ball posted:

My friend and I were discussing a Labyrinth machine, which would feature an "oubliette lock" that fires the ball straight down the middle of the playfield and catches it at the very last second via popup scoop right between the flippers, so from the player's perspective the ball seems to vanish. Also, if you really gently caress up and fall into the Bog of Eternal Stench, you get half-scoring for the rest of your ball.

Oh a Labyrinth machine would be amazing. I'm just imagining some sort of Magic Dance mode where you have to shoot certain shots to remind Jareth of the babe. Once you make enough shots it could finally start a goblin dancing multiball.

Tintin would have a lot of great modes. There are so many great major Tintin stories to mine for material- Cigars of the Pharaoh, the Shooting Star, Explorers on the Moon, the Seven Crystal Balls, and Tintin in Tibet come to mind as really fun for visuals. So my barcade got the hobbit today. And boy is it bad. The flippers are way too weak. The machine I played on had no ball save whatsoever, which I'm sure is more location but it doesn't do much to endear me to the machine. At least the video screen looked better than wizard of Oz, but it is just way too cluttered to pay attention to during play.
