Launch party at Mortimer's! Thanks for the heads up on the Metallica release party. Minneapolis seems to have a lot of good spots for playing tables.

It isn't. Atari had a niche making widebody tables, including some ridiculous oversized ones. I think their Hercules is supposed to be the biggest production pinball table. After the novelty wears off, they play pretty boring.
I played this one at Blainbrook Bowl and it was fairly boring.

As an aside, Minneapolis bis a good city to play pinball in. Mortimers has around 9 Stern tables and a T2, SS Billiards has about 20 machines, and there are maybe 30 or 40 tables at Blainbrook Bowl.

I'd put both Atari's Hercules and Bally's Orbital as "bad" pinball games. Maybe I just don't get the mechanics. Hercules is just boring, and Orbital is neat to look at, but not all that fun to play.

Depends where you live. When I lived in Wisconsin, the best bet was when Midwest Gaming Classic would roll into town and there'd be a big vendor hall with all the machines set to freeplay. For the rest of the year? Not much, aside from a few oddball places.

Here in Minneapolis, we have Blainbrook bowl, which has around 40 machines, Mortimer's with about 8 Stern tables, S.S. Billiards with some 20 machines, and other places with a few tables here and there. It's a good area for pinball, I was loving The Pinball Arcade, but now I just try to make it out to these places once a week and spend too much money. It makes me feel like I'm doing my part to keep the hobby alive.

My favorite tavern with pinball in Minneapolis, Mortimers, just got a few new tables. Terminator 2, in beautiful shape with LED lighting, a beautiful Dracula, and Theater Of Magic, which wasn't running and I'm hoping to play soon. I'm also told they're getting a Wizard of Oz soon. I'm not sure how it came to be, but pinball seems to be pretty popular around here.

Plus when it comes to TPA, it feels like they are running out of good tables. There are some still left, but by next year it'll be barren. Heck, I'd rather pitch in for a Kickstarter to have them build a system for Stern games if it meant us getting titles like Metallica, Tron, and Avengers out on the iPad. I know it's complicated, but I think long term it's their best strategy.

There are a ton of DMD and pre DMD tables I'd love to see. Many licensed, but also stuff like Junkyard, Police Force, Road Show, Black Knight 2000, Fish Tales, all those William's Rollercoaster tables (Comet, Cyclone, and Hurricane), Fire!, and, well, I'm sure there are others.

Edit: It would be awesome if they did Big Bang Bar. I played one at the Texas Pinfest earlier this year and it was really cool.

I'm ashamed to say I've only played Jackbot out of those.

Spent yesterday at SS Billiards in Minnesota, drove over from Eau Claire, WI! Been playing the Rolling Stones machine at the bar near home, the only machine available in town it seems, so this was a treat. Spent most of my time on Medieval Madness and Taxi, so much fun.

Played a few games of the new Wizard of Oz, freaking awesome light show on that play field and great sound/music.

I've been meaning to make it out to SS Billiards again to try out Oz. The owner gave me a long speech about how he wouldn't be getting Oz because the collectors all own one already and it wouldn't pay to put it on location. That was a pretty fast turnaround. I love playing Taxi, but the one at Billiards is fairly worn.

If you feel like making another trip out this way, you really should check out Blainbrook Bowl in northern Minneapolis. They have around 40 machines set-up. Classics too, like Indiana Jones and Funhouse.

I'm not that good of a pinball player, but Wizard of Oz seems like an easy game to keep going for a long time. Also, they have the "free game" score set ridiculously low. I think they're trying to entrap players, but while everything looks nice, it just doesn't seem that exciting.

I had to talk myself out of buying a Secret Service table for $750. So cheesy but it's cheap. My main consideration here is that if I get tired of it, I have a feeling I'd have a hard time unloading it on someone else. It's probably a better idea to get something a bit more spendy, but easy to swap or sell if need be.

Had not heard of Secret Service before but it has some cool artwork. Looks a lot like High Speed. Quick glance at previous sales and it seems that $700 is a fair price for it. Probably right though that for a little more you can find an early 90's B/W title or some Stern's from 5-10 years ago that would be easier to flip. Also likely to be a little deeper in terms of gameplay.

It plays the music from Mission Impossible and the cabinet's side art looks like James Bond. It's not a deep machine. I was looking at a William's Comet, but the art style and simple playfield are a bit of a turn off.

I wouldn't mind something like a Taxi though.

While you should definitely buy a real table, you could also build a VPinball cab. Since the size is dictated by the size of screens you purchase, you could build anything from a full-size table to a portable table-top unit.

Someone around here was looking to get rid of a Data East Ninja Turtles on the quick to fund his Star Trek table purchase. I know it's not a well loved table, but it's beautiful looking and oozes nostalgia for me. I put a dent in the side bringing it up the stairs, unfortunately. I can have some fun on this for a while.

The virtual cab was an option, but I was hoping to score an empty wide body machine on the cheap. I think the real machine should fill the void though. And I have no shortage of machines here in the wild - I have a good 20+ machines with-in walking distance.

My arms are tired from bringing it up 3 flights of stairs and I couldn't muster the energy to get it in position or set it up.

On the TMNT, does it have a multiplayer winner mode? I know a lot of Data East tables have them so I'm assuming it does. Something like a 30 second multiball for the winner at the end to add to their score.

Just tested this out with my roomie and yes, it does. Unfortunately the autoplunger is a bit goofy and doesn't always get the balls up the lane. Kind of annoying especially if it spends 30 seconds trying to get them going, and then the game is over. I think the manual plunger is dampening the effect of the autoplunger, because if I pull back on the plunger, it launches the other balls without any issue.

My other issue is that when I launch a ball, sometimes it triggers a hit on something, denying me a chance to make a skill shot. Not sure what's up with that.

Just a little video I made of my Ninja Turtles pinball machine. It's a pretty simple playfield, and it gets a lot of that Data East hate, but it's ok! I mean, it's no Addams Family or Theatre Of Magic, but it feels ok when it's put next to a lot of late 1980s games - the DMD doesn't add much, but it's useful for telling people not to do drugs. And the game is fairly difficult to make proper shots - makes me feel like a pinball amateur.

But lord, the problem with buying one machine is now it seems really easy to buy another one. And another. Probably wouldn't be a big problem if I was going to route them. I want to share the pinball love, but that seems like a huge hassle.

The thing that works in my favor is that I have a ton of great machines nearby. A mere 15-minute/5 minute drive walk brings me to a location that has Theatre of Magic / T2 / Dracula / Addam's Family / Revenge from Mars / and many modern Stern tables. A further 15 minute walk brings me to Indiana Jones and Medieval Madness. And a 25 minute drive brings me to a location with some 40 odd tables, so thankfully I have a lot to keep me busy. No need to have the fancy tables when I can play them on location.
