So, there has been a lot of great project threads lately, the 53 truck, the 52 roadmaster, the rambler lowrider and a 72 camaro just popped up today. Ive been thinking about doing a thread for awhile, and i figured that i should start a list of my projects, past and present of my fixation with antique cars, motorcycles and bicycles. I think you guys know this 48 buick. with a STRAIGHT 8 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and one from back in the day: ![]() I was up in the bay area visiting some friends and family and my cousin and I went to this classic car dealership, they had flawlessly restored cars and they were selling for crazy money, I had to use the restroom only to find it was out of order and they had andy gumps in the back, when i walked around to the outside of the shop, i was met with this thing, it ran - but not well, it had 2 flats and it didnt charge correctly. I negotiated a deal and had the car shipped to my house (along with annother car i bought the same day) Ive really not done that much to this car, but heres what ive done so far: lowered it rebuilt 6 volt generator had the radio restored and aux in added new voltage regulator visor pertronix regular fluid changes what i have to do: new rear end, the thing wines like hell remove, and re-paint engine and engine bay minor rust repair around windshield, and back valance interior the next big thing coming up will be the rear end, thankfully, they used the same 3rd member in cars from 1939-1957 any of them will fit, but because its a closed drive line "torque tube" its a big nasty job to do anything with the driveline of the vehicle. this is also the first year for the buick dynaflow transmission - which this vehicle is equipped with. it holds 14q of trans fluid. another interesting thing about this car is that its the "high performing" roadmaster with hydraulic lifters! wowie! it also came with a oil filter STOCK at NO EXTRA charge - thats right, this was the first year that oil filters were not an option in the roadmaster line! some of you might know what else is interesting about how this car starts. you do not turn the key to start it, you turn the key to the on position then depress the gas pedal about half way and the starter starts to turn... stomp start was used in cars from the 30s all the way up to 1960! you might also notice that the hood opens to the side.. it opens to both sides, you pop the emblem in and the hood unlaches, if you pop both emblems, the hood comes right off. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ill go make a few videos of the radio and the starting... but in the next installments : 58 cadillac, 50 buick, and 58 buick!!

yup! its a traffic light viewer, I had it when i had my 50 buick with the visor. they make them brand new in 2 styles both "guide" branded. they have old ones too that are even cooler and more deluxe, a lot of them are made by the company fulton - which is the same company that makes the visors. now for something completely different: If you were a kid in the 50s and your dad was driving around in a buick or caddy, you might have lusted for something like this: ![]() its a 1956 Western Flyer x-53 sold by the western auto stores. The bicycle was made by the murray bicycle company of ohio. it featured a horn, headlight, intergrated rear rack, dual spring front end and a troxel seat. its the buick of bicycles. i somewhat restored/hot rodded it about a year ago heres some of the process... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() wtf is that behind the bike ![]() finished: ![]() more next post.

Heres my girl, Ive had this car for almost 6 years now and I can say that i drive it more than any other car i own, even my "modern" car. I met my girlfriend while driving this car, and its the one car i hope ill have forever. 1958 Cadillac Sedan Deville ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ive done a ton of stuff to this car. rebuilt the suspension rebuilt transmission rebuilt bottom end of engine - (new crank - spun a bearing) rebuilt heads - bent a valve, rod and snapped a spring new radiator rebuilt carbureator the list goes on. what i need to do: fix gas gauge completely strip interior, dynamat, re-do stereo (thus the hanging wires) new headliner new carpet fix exhaust - it bounces around pretty bad I had the stereo in the glovebox, but cars of this era had cardboard glovebox liners covered in a felt, it has been falling apart for years and years and finally it gave out and my stereo fell through it on to the floor of the car. i also want to re-mount the speakers flush so that they are completely unseen. i had a single 10" woofer in the trunk for awhile, but it honestly didnt need it, and i never really enjoyed it while driving the car. and fix this: ![]() thats being held on there by the lift mechanism, this is where the gas goes in. a girl hit me when the car was parked on a main street. thank god she found me and tried to make it right, her car (pt cruiser) was in MUCH worse shape than mine ever was. it was a very bizzare encounter and maybe i should have played it diffrently but I came out $2000 richer. I have the money and there is someone that is willing to fix it. but im not sure how exactly i want to go about it. ive sworn up and down that i will NEVER paint this car. but the only way to fix something this complex is to really work that metal, and i havent met a single person that says they can fix it, or fake it so it matches everything else. Ill be doing some work to this car in the coming months and ill be sure to post more pictures here... again, this car is truly my favorite car, and it can be driven like a normal car, sometimes when i drive it, i dont even realize that its a 19ft long pink car until people give me thumbs up or ask what year it is. more later!

Yes! the tucker movie! if you havent seen it, i highly recommend seeing it. Francis Coppla with jeff bridges, its a winning combo. Preston Tucker was a visionary, and it was a sad fate that became of him. he designed the turrets for b-17s for gods sakes. here is extremely rare footage of his "combat car" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTga-68fplQ this car was being bid to the army, but it was rejected because it was "too fast" as we all know, jeep won the contract. no one knows if one of these cars still exists. here is a great read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston_Tucker next we have the 58 buick(s) the love of classic cars runs in my family, my cousin has several cars and when good deals come up we partner up and strike. the 58 buick limited is touted as having more chrome than any car ever in existance. it is also a car with an extended trunk deck, the limited series of buicks were considered to rival the eldorados and lincolns of 1958. they were completely decked out with every option including the auto-tronic eye that sensed oncoming cars and dimmed the high beams, power windows, power seats, heated front bench, air leveling suspension and automatically closing trunk. my cousin opted for the convertible: which is a complete work in progress, we are doing a full frame off restoration of it and we are taking our time with it because this car needs to be flawless. ![]() ![]() the 364 nailhead combined with the dual pitch dynaflow (not pictured) ![]() and then there is my 4 door. I think about the day i bought this car very fondly, the height of my addiciton, because earlier in the day, i purchased my 48 buick roadmaster. we found the car in a small text only ad in the recycler it said "58 buick ltd" and gave the phone number, no price, or discription. we called and talked to a guy who said that the owner of the car doesnt speak to anyone about it, and he was in charge of selling the car. the place was a factory that made plastic light lens' and it was spread out over a huge industrial area in the middle of nowhere. there were steel buildings all over the property and each one of them held a few examples of the same car, there was one building that had 4 1960 chrysler 300's, another had all 58 oldsmobile wagons, another had nothing but 1960 cadillacs, 1957 olds, the list goes on and on. the cars were in mostly terrible shape but mostly complete. he led us to a harbor freight awning with the plastic tarp walls, inside was this buick, we cut a deal and a few weeks later, at 5 in the morning i got a call saying my shipment had arrive. that shipment was 2 buicks, 10 years apart, 1948 and 1958. i had tons of photographs from that day that got wiped in a computer crash last year, but here is the car shortly after it was delivered. ![]() ![]() ![]() the most incredible part is that the interior is original and preserved under dealer installed plastic. ![]() this car even has ac. all the lines to the airbags are still in tact, but we believe that the bags blew sometime in the 60s and they were replaced by traditional coil springs. here is how it sits today: ![]() not much change just because we are using it as a living shop manual to restore the convertible, when a question about the restoration comes up, we simply take a peek at this car. the plan for the white car: once the convertible is finished, we plan on getting this car running and maybe painting it silver... get a set of cars.. hmmm.. still to come: more buicks freinds cars bicycles bsa LobsterboyX fucked around with this message at Nov 4, 2010 around 00:19 |

the 1960 Buick:![]() I found this car on craigslist for 1000 bucks, it was about 40 miles away from me and one night i went with some friends to check it out, as it turns out, the car was sitting in a lot with 6 or 7 other old cars behind a real estate office in BFE. the woman i spoke with on the phone said some deadbeat left all the cars there and hadnt paid storage on them. i talked her down to 600 bucks and with lien sale papers in hand, i had the car towed to my grandmothers house. heres where the story of this car gets sad. I spent months and weeks getting it running, and finally it was good to drive, i drove it around for about a week and decided i was going to paint it. the original concept of this project was to put it at my grandmothers house and work on it so i could spend more time with her and keep an eye on her because of her failing health. I did tons of body to it as well, i had a nice looking car and at final total i had spent just over 1600 bucks. i painted it white and red first and i personally thought it looked great. ![]() then sadly my grandmother passed away and the car sat there, i didnt have the heart to go back and work on it because it just wasnt the same. my grandfather had taught me to work on cars in the very garage where the car sat and i just felt i should start over. the house was to be rented immediately and the car had to be gone. at the time i was working at a hot rod shop and money was very tight so i couldent rent a garage for it and i couldent leave it at work. i made a few phone calls and everyone i talked to said that they didnt like the white paintjob and if they were going to buy it, they wanted me to black prime it. a few of the people that i talked to were studio guys who were doing a side project about the "rat rod" scene. so i rattlecanned my nice paintjob primer black ![]() with great trepidation i had someone come over and look at it, he said he wanted it but instead of using it for a project he wanted to use it to restore his 2d that he had had since he was a kid. we made a deal that he would take the body and i would keep the engine, transmission, brakes and dashboard, when he saw it, and heard the story of why i had to sell it, he offered to buy everything to help me out, he even offered to buy it and keep it in his garage until i could get back on my feet. i decided to let it go but i kept the 401 nailhead engine and i still have it to this day. the other car is a 56 dodge that belongs to my girlfriend who was just a friend at this point in time

this is the best you'll get!![]() lets take a walk down memory lane... shall we? i remember very vividly riding around in my dads 54 buick when i was a kid, we would take it to shows and generally take little father son outings in the car. one time we went to a show and i saw the scariest car i had ever seen, it was a 50 buick, and being a little kid, i told my dad that i thought the car was going to eat me. our 54 buick was scary, but it almost looked like it was smiling compared to this thing. i came across the ad on annother forum and rounded up my girlfriend and my friend jim to come out with me to look at the car. we pulled up and saw this. ![]() girlfriend: "that thing looks kinda scary" friend: "loving buy it, if you dont i will" I bought it. - It drove like a dream but it had some issues, the first being that it was a salvage titled car. the second was it had no interior other than the front bench that was torn to tatters. and the third problem is that it had a hole in the passenger side floorboard big enough for my fat rear end to fit through. for all of its faults, the car ran great, looked great and it was dirt cheap, 2000 bucks for a running driving car that was more than freeway ready. i drove the car for 8 months and loved every minute of it, i bought it a visor, skirts, i lowered it, i cut the muffler out of it and added a straight pipe, it was just a mean, fun car. there is a yearly show that is put on by the buick club that usually attracts many beautiful cars....and elderly folks. when they didnt allow me entry because i didnt "pre register" i tore up the grass on the way out, thats what this car made me do and feel like. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() a few weeks later a guy approached me saying that he got my number from a mutual friend who was at the show that day. he wanted to buy the car and was prepared to offer me money of it. i thought if i could get 4k for it knowing that i only got it for 2. the guy came over and seemed pretty nice, he looked at the car but did not drive it, but he wanted to know how it ran. i thought the whole encounter was a bit strange so i asked him what he was going to do with the car, he seemed a bit uncomfortable with the question and brushed me by trying to butter me up with "kids your age dont appreciate things like you do , your cars are beautiful..." he pulled out the money but i had a feeling that something was up, he came with a trailer but he knew full well the car was running and driving. i asked him again and he said "if i tell you, you wont sell it to me, and i really need this car" "well i wont sell it to you if you dont tell me" "the car is going to be in indiana jones 4, we are going to paint it black and white and take it to connecticut where it will be rolled in a crash scene" i really didnt know what to think, i love the indiana jones trillogy but i really didnt want to see my car get wrecked. things started to get a bit ugly, he started saying that there was a 80% chance my car would not get rolled and id have the option to buy it back with a new paint job and... a roll cage installed....i told him i wanted to think about it then he started getting very ugly. he tried to offer me 100 bucks more and i still said i just wanted to think about it, then he started saying that i was really stupid for not taking the money, the car was a pile and no one would ever offer anything for my car. i told him to get bent. for the next few days i struggled with the idea of it, . i thought about it and came to the conclusion that i didnt care about the movie (disgrace of a move anyway) and i wanted someone to have fun with the car like i did. a few weeks later the guy called again, this time his tone was a bit different. firstly he appologized to me for being rude and he wanted to take me to lunch to make up for it, i declined and told him that i didnt want to sell the car and he should stay bent, he started screaming again and i hung up the phone. i thought it was over at this point, 3 more weeks pass and he called again heres how the converstion went "i thought i told you..." "name your price" "10,000 bucks fuckface" "i can give you 9,500" "where do i drop it off?" and thats what i did. the movie was a failure, i was supremely disapointed, but the money made everything ok. 2 days after the movie premier, i got another call from another guy "your car is ready, you still want it... right?" i went back to the place i dropped it off to find this ![]() ill be the first to admit that i got a bit emotional, but perked up a bit when he showed me some other cars that might be for sale, including a steel 1932 ford roadster, a 57 oldsmobile with fresh paint and a very authentic looking 41 chevy military car with all the blackout lights and wartime accessories. then the douchebag called me again and said "i heard you were over there, you better walk away, because those cars are mine and if you" click. thus ends the story of the 1950 buick... http://losangeles.craigslist.org/an...2042472515.html
