Lots of love for the 50's and 60's stuff. I guess I don't understand why everybody hates on 70's cars though. Granted they are slow, and the build and interior quality started to plummet, but there is some really good styling from that era too!

Furthermore, I can honestly say that I have yet to see a single pre-war car which inspires me.

Since everybody here is, in essence, a typist; I thought you might appreciate a recent find of mine. I got it at Value Village for $20. Dirty, and kids had the keys all jammed-up. After a good cleaning and oiling, everything works beautifully.

Getting at exactly what model it is has been difficult, and I still don't know for sure because looks/features just don't quite match serial number references that I have found. I feel confident in saying that it is a Royal Portable from 1934-35.

Wow. Where do you guys get all this old 50s stuff? I want some of that.
Do you just go to antique/thrift shops? Or flea markets or what?

Also, I've been browsing my local craigslist, and found something I really want.
The 1955 Ford F-100 Panel Van. $3000. I have the money. But I'm not sure its worth it.

Also found this for $2000. But I don't want it as much.

Not as hard as you may think, but you can't just get them at the super-market like you used to be able to. If Royal didn't set the ribbon standard, then they at least adhered to it. I have heard mention that some of the more archaic machines are hard to find ribbons for.

Anyway, I found a local shop that has ribbons (I kept the steel spools from the ancient ribbon the machine came with) and I'm typing like a motherfucker.

So you want to over-use exclamation points? Try typing an apostrophe, hitting backspace, and then typing a period.

I really like that ford pannel van - ive always wanted a panel or a suburban for motorcycle transport... depending on the engine thats in it, and if he has the fenders that may be worth it. it also looks like someone grazed a white pole on the passenger side rear quarter.. thats an easy pop out but because of how plain the side of it is, it may be a bitch to get back to laser straight... go check it out.

that dodge on the otherhand is a little cutie. I wouldent call myself an expert on 50s mopar but i do know that they have a tendency to rust like swiss cheese.

the only expierence ive had with 50s mopar is this - its my girlfriends 56 dodge royal lancer..

Typewriters are awesome too!

This beauty was in the train car behind the locomotive i posted a page back (btw - I really dont know how he got his hands on the train - but the tour guide told me that there are some things not on display in the museum that are so rare and valuable that no insurance company would cover them - so nothing for him was out of reach including a canadian train.)

but i thought this had to be the most beautiful type writer i had ever seen

no info on it other than that its beautiful

now after seeing that, heres our remmington rand streamliner

I bought it a few years ago for 10 bucks. - i then gave it to my mom, who is a writer. it does not work, its got some hold up and ive never really taken the time to see what the problem is with it. its just in beautiful shape.

I forgot about this too, its my only wooden body radio. this was restored about 15 years ago and im guessing that its probably from the 30s. it works great

on top of it is an original 1930s copy of bambi, a life in the woods.

I'll have to go check them out IRL, but from what they've described, they're both in fairly decent condtion. The van sounds like it needs a lot of engine work though. As far as the Dodge goes, it allegedly only needs a radiator. But its never that easy.
And it obviously needs cosmetic work too.

However, the nice thing is, these have been sitting in Central Florida for at least 10 years, so they shouldn't be too rusty. I hope.

Thanks for those typewriters! They are my new thing until ADD takes over and a I get onto something else. They are definitely machines and discussion belongs here more than other places.

That Remington looks great. What I did with mine (it had a hang-up too) was to go over all the joints that I could reach with acetone and q-tips (you'll see some in my photo.) Then after the acetone evaporates, get in there with 3-in-1 and q-tips.

If that doesn't work, and your mom is keen on using the thing; you can send it to this place: http://www.bluemooncamera.com/Typew...ir_Services.php

They are local to me, but they take stuff from all over the world. Service charge is $55 which is sweet. Problem is that shipping far outstrips that service charge.

Stupid drivers always breaking car, Gronk fix car...

Awesome thread! I recently moved into a place that uses my parents inherited 1950 Wedgewood stove. Its an absolute beast with 4X dual burner simmer, enough BTUs for each burner to singe the handles on my big wok, a perfect temp oven with RobertShaw thermostat, a loving griddle, burner-specific grease trays, and heater on the side! Its definitely a bit war-torn and a mind-bending bastard to clean, but it works so well and looks cool too. Its needed the nickel plating to be re-done on the tops under the burners so I'd love any tips if you have for that. The original light bulb even works!

I do need to fix the timer on mine, I think the mechanism is stopped with gunk.

Oh my ! cool PA. Show us the mic - ive seen so many cool old pa mic's for sale at antique stores and swap meets, for some reason i guess they see me coming with those things.

I have about 8 of these guys...

Funny story of how i got them - I was still in high school and in all the classes had these pa speakers, all of them worked just fine and sounded great. the only bad part is that a lot of them had been painted over. when i was a senior, my school was modernizing their system by installing tvs, electronic bells and all types of bullshit that did not need to be replaced. all the old stuff was working just fine. so i found a pile of these things sitting behind the abandoned auto shop on the campus. i asked a few people who had no idea what i was talking about, or who actually cared about old wooden speaker boxes, so i pulled my 69 nova around piled the trunk up with them. in hindsight, i should have taken every last one of them, but i have enough for every room in my house (when i get around to buying a house)

It's a 1948 Allied Radio Corp. Knight 93-350 PA amplifier/speaker. I don't have pictures of it at the moment, but it's this model, working and in mint condition, with speaker and microphone.

The mic is a Slim-X Shure CX-77. Looks like this model, but with an upright stand.

Im going to have to fire up my old desktop to get more pictures of it. but heres a quick story of the car..

I had always known i wanted an old car as my first car. I really wanted a 50s car but my mother was adamantly opposed to that idea. It had been in my mind of a long long time that the second i turned 15, i would get my drivers permit, buy a 50s cadillac or buick and be on my merry way. i saved and saved from misc jobs and by the time i was 15 i had about 1200 bucks that i was allowed to spend on a car. my grandmother loved to scour the papers for good deals on anything she could get her 89 year old hands on. my mom told me to give my grandmother a list of the cars i wanted and she would look for me. the list was filled with things like 60 oldsmobile, 58 buick, 59 chevy, 64 rivi, 50 buick, 54 buick, 65 bonnie, 65 wildcat and just for kicks, the 68-72 nova.

so sure enough she found it for me. it was burgundy and had a rebuilt 350 with some cool old wieand hop up parts. edelbrock carb and a hot loopy cam. it had some weird cragar mags on it and i was in heaven. it was 2500 bucks and i was very disappointed. in those days i would ride my bike to school and one day when i came home, i noticed that my moms car was parked on the street. when i opened the garage to put my bike away, there was my nova. i walked in and my mom hugged me and said "go get your money" i came in and gave her the money and she gave me the keys to my very own car!

8 years later, 2 accidents, 2 engines and 3 paint jobs later, i watched as the car was flat bedded away to a new life with another 16 year old kid.

That cabinet was likely made by one of three manufacturers, JBL, Jensen, or Electro-Voice, during the golden age of Monaural Hi-Fi, the Mid 1950's. Take the back off and look for a manufacturer label on the magnet. It also may have been custom built from plans purchased out of a catalog. Judging by the legs, It's most likely a JBL.

That speaker would go great paired with classic Mono receiver like the Fisher 500.

I want to eat my chicken.

Swap meets, flea markets, thrift stores, antique stores, craigslist, garage sales, old people that know im in to old poo poo.. The list goes on - you can find this anywhere, you just have to know where to look. I hate the american pickers, pawn stars, auction heros, storage thieves - these new shows are ruining the things I love.. Its basically allowing every rear end in a top hat that has anything old to think that they are sitting on a gold mine. As soon as the bubble bursts, there will be a lot of cool stuff ripe for the pickin... I mean buying.

Found more pictures of the nova.

I worked at a hot rod shop in high school and i became friends with the guy that mixed the paint at the body shop we used at the time. i knew i wanted to paint my car so i would go after school and work over to the paint shop, I did all the body work and even mixed the paint myself. the only thing that i didn't do is lay out the stripes - i didnt trust myself and id have someone to blame if they turned out wrong... I learned on this, it wasn't the most beautiful paint job, there was a lot of bondo and during the painting process, i had a nasty injury that put me in the hospital for a few days, the guys sprayed the rest of it for me and brought it to pick me up...

The hood was like that because they were rushed to get the car back together for my release... I just never got around to adjusting it.

It was awesome for a few years when this happened..

I had a glancing blow at 60 mph by a drunk driver. My car was stopped waiting to make a left. Her car slammed in to mine and carreened out of control in to 3 other cars, it was one of those times where your life flashes before your eyes, I tensed up and held on and it was over. she turned at the last second.

it was fixed and i painted it a stock color "Cortez silver"

The second accident I was not so lucky - that was a full head on with a dude talking on his phone who blew a light, got spooked and hit me head on. I walked away from that. The car needed a new sub frame and a new front clip.

Heres the car getting fixed from the first accident:

the cortez silver after the 2nd accident

Im pissed at you guys for making me want a nova again...
