So - best theme songs? I'm probably in the minority in liking both of the last two a lot.

The Keys/White one has a nice lo-fi swagger and a good hook.

But 'You know my name' is a mad power pop odyssey. Horrible brick wall mastering though, which spoils the dynamics of the song.

Nobody Does It Better. It's a perfect melody combined with some fantastic late-70s power-ballad production, and, Carly Simon absolutely nails it.

Even the title is perfect; if any song title perfectly described James Bond, "Nobody Does It Better" has to be it. Christ, I love that song.

You may think this is a bad thing but if you think about it more you will realise it is the best thing.

I don't think the voices themselves are the issue. It's the production and arranging.

When they're alternating lines, it doesn't sound bad at all. White's vocals are really rough compared to Keys's, and they may even be filtered a bit to make him sound more lo-fi. I disagree with this from an artistic perspective; I know White is known for that sound, but Bond isn't and shouldn't be grungy. Smooth him out a bit and their back-and-forth sounds better.

The real issue comes in the chorus. Someone (probably White, but it could've been any number of people involved with the song) insisted that they sing in unison or close harmony for the entire chorus. If the voices were similar in timbre, this would sound great. But when you have drastically different voices, you need to separate them so the harmonics of their voices don't clash. (Actually, they may have wanted the voices to clash, which is a cool sound in certain settings. But different people have different tolerances for that sound. And again, I would argue that a Bond theme isn't the place for it.)

In any event, I like the lyrics and the music. If the vocals were rerecorded, the song could be better. In fact, if either White or Keys sang it solo, it would be much better. But even with the flaws it has, I think it's pretty good.

Smart points all. I agree, though from memory the wonkiness is sort of what appeals to me.

I loved in Casino Royale the way YKMN and the score hint at and play around the classic Bond theme all the way through, (I think YKMN even uses the Bond chords?) but saves the actual theme for the last shot. So badass.

Someone mentioned the throwback to that connery shot and it's something i love about the new bond films. The throwbacks to previous films really help to tie the series together and maintain the brand while allowing the character to develop. Imo craig's bond has to have more stylistic throwbacks as he is so much more raw then the ones of old.

My favourite one of those is 'Bond. James Bond' at the end of Casino Royale. Followed by the music cue you've been subconsciously prepped to hear for 2 hours.

Because I mean god drat.

Casino is either excellent or "not the kind of Bond I like/want/remember"

Purely taken as not a James Bond film it is a great movie, because it has that attached baggage of "a Bond movie" it doesn't have universal love.

Quantum I didn't like.

Personally I think it's comfortably the best Bond movie. It has some great badass lines, brutal violence and good 'spy doing spy stuff' scenes (see: setting off all the car alarms in the carpark). And it has a testicle torture scene, which is a hilariously exact copy of the scene in the book.

Speaking of the book, a useful comparison is actually the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movie - IMO both SH and CR were quite faithful to the lead character as depicted in the books.

And yeah, Quantum was rubbish. Fingers crossed for Skyfall.

And in the novel so was Tilly. The idea is Bond's masculinity is so potent that he's able to conquer "the sexual challenge all beautiful Lesbians have for men."

There should be a list somewhere of Ian Fleming's horrendous world views.

And it needs to start and end with BALL TORTURE.

It is apparent from Casino Royale this is a topic that had exercised Mr Fleming's mind quite considerable.

I thought they were actually saying "Mum," and that was an acceptable replacement for "Ma'am" in England or something.

Mum is lower class for mother. Ma'am is upper class for 'your majesty'. They sound identical.

It's somewhat safer if you go with the modern followups or at least steel yourself for some terrifically offensive stereotypes and Fleming's warped views on masculinity (such as lesbians being the ultimate conquest).

And a terrifying amount of drinking and smoking. And product placement. Hooooo boy there's product placement.

I believe at one point Bond opines that he's 'surprisingly fond of negroes' so there's that too.

Noted, sir. In the next Bond movie, Craig will not smoke because it isn't healthy and will drink only non-alcoholic beverages.
He'll drive a hybrid ride a bike, attend a pilates class, and maybe utter some nice comment about how all people are equal while getting robbed by inner city youths. He won't fight back, because these poor people are victims of the system, man!

I know you're just making a hilarious, but Fleming made the same joke in... Moonraker? It's been a while. Bond goes off to the health spa (because even in the 60's it was acknowledged that 80 cigs a day was suboptimal) and he comes back a changed man, chewing his multigrain toast and rhapsodising about peptides.

Then he gets called for a mission and orders up some whiskey, smokes and fried bacon. KILLIN' FOOD.

On another note, I have to say this Skyfall ad really doesn't do it for me. It looks like Daniel Craig is getting ready to melodramatically shoot off his kneecap.

Start with Casino Royale. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is pretty ace too. The Spy who Loved Me is missable, and Diamonds are Forever is starting to feel a little rote.

I just don't like Daniel Craig. He feels like a wooden actor best suited to mindless action movies and he doesn't have any of the charm and the debonair demeanor that any of the previous Bonds had. Not to mention the two Craig movies took themselves way too seriously, had no gadgets, no Q in general and none of the kitsch factor the previous movies had. Casino and Quantum are just soulless action movies and really I hate them both so I think I'm just splitting hairs.

Yep, you're a quiplover.

The reason for the gogglage you're getting is that it's really hard to argue that Casino Royale isn't a better film than nearly every other Bond film. But I think you're saying it's not as good a Bond film, which is subtly different, and much more supportable.

I wonder what use John Cleese expected Bond to get out of it. I mean, a car has to be the worst thing you could make turn invisible. Why not make Bond a Predator suit? Or gently caress it build him a starship, because between the cloaking device, doomsday space weapon and MI6 holodeck, that film probably started out as a Star Trek Voyager script.
