a very unhappy baby whale

When did people like this stop being harmless eccentrics and start becoming a list of psychological disorders?

I think people find this guy inspirational because he has a pretty decent philosophy of life (be healthy, use your brain instead of being lazy, try to re-use and recycle rather than chuck stuff in a dump, if you practice things you'll get better at them) and does his best to live that stuff out in his day-to-day life.

Sure he's using a generator for some things, but he's been designing a mini hydro plant, recharges batteries with a combination of exercise bike and solar power, heats and cooks with wood which he cuts himself. Using a generator to do a small amount of welding a couple of times a week is going to waste less fuel than someone commuting an hour a day in a car 5 days a week and heating the house with natural gas.

I never knew "living off the land" was chopping down trees to build forts and burning hundreds of gallons of gas in a filthy generator. Maybe the self-sufficient part is when he drives his truck to his dad's house to use his garage.

Guy is inventive as heck but living off the land he is not.

Chopping down trees to use fits squarely under living off the land.

I haven't finished watching all the vids, about 7 in, and he is very honest about what he consumes and what he re uses. Nor do I get an preaching angle from him about his energy and material consumption. Maybe he does so later, but I don't get the criticisms here unless people are just being .

Yeah, I haven't heard him claim to be living off the land yet, but I sure have read a lot of people in this thread describing him as such.

I like watching his videos, even though I find the way he talks and acts a tad off-putting, because I suspect a lot of it is a put on. But maybe I'm being to hard on the guy because I'm super jealous of his awesome life!

He quite literally spends an entire video preaching about energy and resource usage. It was linked somewhere on the first couple of pages, I think it was 16 or something. Doesn't make him any less awesome though.

It's pretty comforting that he didn't grow up in the states. If he did, every teacher and "armchair psychologist" would love to tell him how many psychological disorders he has and what pills he should take to help them. After following there orders and eliminating any of the natural drive and creativity he has, he would be popping anti-depressants in a cubicle.

This guy is great, and just hearing how he tries to get his younger brother to build things right away instead of putting it off is something everyone needs to hear.

I think unless he had a real hand in editing and shooting the documentary it wouldn't have the same magnetism his current videos do.

You really get the feeling the guy is learning how to make a house, a robot, AND how to edit videos all at once. A slick production would detract from everything I think.

He may just be a big Manchild.

Differences between sexes have to start with chromosomes, women are double XX, and men are XY, but beyond that people have base pairs of genetic information. I know absolutely that Men have much more momentum to achieve goals because testosterone is a hormone that makes Men restless. It most definitely directs men towards traits of competitiveness and domination, and it doesn't particularly have anything to do with greater intelligence, but men are tinkerers and this is clear if you just watch the differences between people.

That loving guy.

Regarding him coming from Hamilton, he is a metaphor for the idle hands and misplaced productivity due to the factory closures and dying industry of the great steel city.

Werner Herzog could make a great documentary about him, but it would seem a little cheap since he's almost doing that himself with his youtube videos.

Exactly. I think we're all in this thread because this dude is just awesome and we all know it. Even if he puts on a schtick, that's certainly no detraction from the actual tasks he is completing, and if anything, the "act" is an indicator of his salesmanship. Perhaps it's my childish idealism speaking for me here, but I like to think he's really just that smart. People like to be inspired by their heroes who accomplish the improbable, and, being aware of this cultural need for people to see the unlikely conquered, documents his experiments in reducing the unlikelihood of accomplishing whatever project he imagines will be fun and challenging.

That's exactly the mentality that worked for Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye, Beakman, Art Attack, Sesame Street, etcetera. It's uplifting, educational, and empowering in it's simple honesty, and because of that, bears many similarities to children's programming...which, to me, seems like a valid explanation for why so many posters in this thread seem to want to attribute abnormality to his mental/social functions, because he's behaving like a child. As far as I'm concerned, that's a very good thing.
