So I bought a shiny new 1970 Dodge Charger R/T for the muscle car challenge, slapped some tires on it and went out to dominate the loser Chevy's... Sadly, whoever decided the gear ratios on this thing apparently didn't bother to do any research at all, as it tops out at 113mph in 4th, while every other car in the field blazes past me like I'm a turtle on the big straights.

The game car has a very close ratio 4-speed manual for some bizarro reason. The real cars had stupidly tall gears, because you can do that when you have 425hp and 426lb/ft of torque. Even the non-hemi cars would go faster than that in 3rd gear, let alone 4th.

A custom gear box fixes that. Even though you can't seem to adjust each gear yourself, only the overall top speed. I really do love the car though, I gave it custom suspension so it's a bit closer to the ground and with soft tyres it can really corner.

I played the hell out of Ridge Racer 1-2 in the arcade and later on the PS1 (+RRRevolution). What cars do I want to get as close as possible to that? (with tuning of course, to hug the ground and allow mindboggling drifting as best as possible)

Decided to try playing with soundtracks for a while. Sega Touring Car, Ridge Racer Revolution and a bunch of Yuzo Koshiro racing game music

e: Penalizing you for hitting vehicles or leaving the road, colliding with the border is a good thing, makes you a better driver in the end. It's just a shame that the AI drivers aren't bothered by it the slightest, they'll happily step on the gas and jump up my butt when I get disqualified for touching a guy in the side during a corner because he sped off on the inside and ended up with in front of me and another two AI cars were blocking me from being able to brake or steer away from the impending crash.. :v

But this bus challenge, I got silver and gold should be there in a couple more tries, but out of the times I failed I feel like at the very least half of those were not my fault. But AI is ramming me and the race is just not fun. It is slow and boring.

So yeah, it is not actually that hard, but I understand why people don't enjoy it.

The AI in the Daytona truck race in A-spec might go down as the most annoying ever. At one point three trucks hit me from behind at the same time and actually caused my vehicle to go airborne.

Also it seems like for amateur series the prize money you can win is much less than the cost of a vehicle that you need to enter the race.

Yes, I am indeed purple.

I'm really enjoying Photo Mode. It's a shame a few of these get ruined by pixelation. Let's hope the future patches sort it out. The Challenger is a beast, it can beat the top end racing cars from MOTUL and Tom's and poo poo with a little tuning.

****What follows is the first experience of someone who has never played a GT game. Its long, you shouldnt read it.****

I have played pretty much every single racing game ever. From hardcore poo poo like iRacing, to NFS, to goddamn Mario Kart, to everything. To get ready for GT5, I played like 8 hours of Forza 3 straight. But I have never played a GT game. In fact, I've never even seen a video of one played. I just never lived with someone with a PlayStation.

My friends told me GT was completely different from other games. So for comedy value, I preordered GT5, and I purposefully avoided everything on the internet until it showed up. I wanted to be a virgin.

So it showed up, and I played through my first few races and I seriously have culture shock.

This is the most goddamn Japanese thing ever. Between the corny as gently caress menu music, to the maze of menu's and information in the first place. I seriously have no loving idea whats going on, and the 6 page manual doesn't help at all. "Premium" vs standard? Car levels? License tests? Specs? My Lounge, My Home? What the gently caress is all of this! I sat down to play a racing game and got dropped in some sort of car owner RPG. Its Final Fantasy: Inline 4 edition.

After 5 minutes of just going through menus blindly and getting four hundred DID YOU KNOW popups, I just spent my 20k on a Civic and headed to race. I did a track I know completely backwards/forwards, Tsukaba, and I gotta say... once you actually get to the track, the game is much better. The cars are fun to drive, it looks good, and I don't know if its just the sixxaxis vs the 360 controller, but the cars seem more drivable. (I generally don't use a wheel on console games)

That said, even while racing, the onscreen display poo poo is more annoying then in other racing games. And goddamnit how do i turn off the music in game. Awful.

Basically so far my verdict is: Menus taken from a a japan-o-rpg, generally goddamn weird choices... but if you boil it down to car on track action, I'm having fun so far.

But I can tell you right now, I'm going to dislike not having the freedom to choose my own cars/damage/races in my career when I want.

Except The Entertainer, I always love that.

Tuning question:
Do aero kit add-ons always improve performance? from what I can tell I can only adjust the front and spoiler angles, do the other add-ons do anything? (If so, are they lowering my top speed in return for better handling?)

I've read that the wheel is okay but the pedals aren't that hot in the DFGT.

$25 VS the $300+ the G27 costs? Go for it, what's $25 going to do when you've saved up enough

On B-Spec, is there anything that affects your driver's composure permanently? I'm wondering if there is any positive effect from trying to micromanage and keep the marker in the center instead of letting it do whatever? When my driver is in a car that gets him a half lap lead, I don't see the point in constantly telling him to increase pace except to just keep putting up good lap times.

I haven't found anything yet. I gave him a 825 HP car and put him on the Clubman cup runs. He lapped the entire field but was still pegged deep blue most of the time.

Not that I've seen, honestly I just upgrade my car enough so I'm fairly confident in him winning, start the race, and switch over to watch something. Check back in 15 minutes when the race is over.
