I just tried out the head tracking and hot diggity drat that's some good poo poo. It was a little bit of a pain in the rear end to get working properly, but once it did that added like a whole 'nother dimension. I'm playin' in 4D now.

Kinda GT5 related in a way I guess, but EA have recently announced a sequel to Need For Speed: Shift. What will it be bringing? Well according to IGN, they played a demo where they got to drive around Spa at night () and also confirmed that Bathhurst will be in the game. Destructoid also had this to say:

quote:

Unfortunately, I wasn't given too much hands-on with the title. From what I played however, Shift 2: Unleashed looks to be a very solid sim racer, with guide lines on the road to guide fresh players, and a dynamic weather/road system. As cars race around the track, the road will take damage and create a dynamic. Cars take damage, which is especially notable during the night. When your headlamps go out, night races are even more difficult.

Apparently the tracks look really nice both at night and in the wet, and the PS3 is the lead development platform for the game. It's nice to see a third game coming to challenge GT and Forza, and even though some people weren't that keen on the original Shift, I think they did some really cool things with it. I'm a little skeptical since Shift 2 is coming so soon already (Spring 2011) but they seem to be adding a lot of really cool things. I figure if you like racing games (especially GT/Forza) then it might be worth keeping your eye on this, seems kinda like a mish mash of both games with it's own quirks thrown in. Here's some screens:

I absolutely can not beat the second beginner NASCAR event which makes me feel pretty dumb since no one else has said anything about it. I just can't pass the first car even if I draft people or whatever, it seems like there just isn't enough track to do it.

Someone explain to me how to do it as if I am a stupid moron baby.

I started my draft with the outside guy then moved inside through the corner. I got silver this way and suspect whenever my wheel finally arrives (gently caress your lateness, Amazon ) I will get gold no problem since I'll be able to hold my line better in the turn.

After 3 loving days I have beaten IC-10 Rome 2 lap. I had to actually turn off ALL assists and drive offensively. I realized that I should think pass first and then break second.

For people stuck on this (since i originally asked for help), I feel the point that dictates your success is the first sharp red line turn, you MUST pass the car ahead of you or it's a wrap. Play this one defensively, if you can't pass the yellow lambo, don't.

Once you pass the aforementioned car, slipstream on the line, there's a gap on the next upcoming big red turn that you HAVE to push through, don't break hard.

After that you should be in 6th or 5th place. If you need any trophy, drive smart and defensively the rest of the way and they will never catch up, or if you want to try your luck, keep pushing and overtaking on those two first turns in the beginning of the lap, and slipsteam on the straightaways.

I *think* if you hit a wall with your backside first, you won't get a DQ, same with hitting a car.

I feel like I deserve a trophy for this :I

Damage doesn't unlock at higher levels:

quote:

Sony has since clarified to IGN how damage works in the game. "Damage occurs to cars right from the beginning," Sony said in a statement, "it is not "unlocked."

Confusion seems to have stemmed from its differing implementation across the game's extensive garage, a point that Sony further clarified. "Standard models have minor deformation and scratches," said Sony, "Premium cars have greater visible level of damage, and Premium racing models have the highest level of damage."

I'd be willing to bet a lot of the people complaining are people who have never played previous games in the GT series and were expecting something other than a bunch of maddeningly difficult license tests and challenge races, a bunch of races that you need to buy (and dump a bunch of money tuning) a specific car for, and brain-dead AI on rails.

Because all of those things have been staples of all the previous installments of the series.

I guess there's always goetta be a couple complainers in every thread though.

Been playing since the original GT. The reason people are complaining is because it's taken polyphony 6 years to develop forza with go karts and a bunch of annoyances.

The "rpg" element in the game has always been there but unless you dive into the used car market in GT5(i.e if you don't mind looking at terrible models all day) it basically consists of:

Check out entry requirements
buy one of the 5-6 cars eligible for the race
Upgrade the gently caress out of it
Win less money than you invested
Repeat over and over until you get sick of the cycle and do challenges instead.

I dunno maybe I'm just disappointed but the older games seemed like they just offered more options.

Yeah they've got guys working at Slightly Mad Studios who are on the SimBin team, which are responsible for some of the best sim racers ever made (GTR2 being a prime example). EA now has Slightly Mad working on the Shift series, and Criterion working on Hot Pursuit. Black Box (the guys responsible for all the terrible NFS games and running the franchise into the ground) have been sacked I think, either ways EA isn't letting them touch the NFS franchise anymore.

As it stands though yeah, with the talent working on it and their seemingly very firm grasp on what people actually want from a more realistic racing game, I think the Shift series will probably end up being a solid contender to Gran Turismo and Forza. The original Shift was a bit arcadey in comparison but if they keep at it I can see them putting out some really good stuff, especially since it is a fun game.

Kinda shocked you haven't played Shift though I mean come on, it has trophies..

I noticed my cars started taking damage at round level 5 really. The weird thing is that level 20 it's actually harder to damage the vehicles, premium or otherwise. This can't be intentional so hopefully they'll patch this in the future.

If you see it in game you may change your mind, though the Mazda Furai front and rear lights do look kinda alien. The body has ultra smooth lines which create a very attractive and speedy look. It's one of the amateur race rewards in B-Spec, and it's fast as hell. I've used it in the professional class quite a bit.

In fact, I'm using it on B-Spec Professional Championship (level 14) right now, and the first race is La Sarthe 4 laps. drat, these races are starting to get pretty long!

This game is annoyingly hard for me as a sim racer.

-Cars seem to bite. HARD. If you get it wrong they will oversteer fast, or settle into a terminal plow.
-I STILL can't seem to brake without ABS1. It feels like the brake bias is 70% rearward all the time.
-Cockpit mode looks ok. But at high speed cornering it shakes/vibrates so bad it fools me into thinking my FPS is really low. The shaking is also distracting. As is the onscreen wheel you can't turn off.
-Miss shifts are a loving kick in the balls. With a G25. You cannot flat shift. Which is dumb. And if you make the mistake of not lifting off the gas enough, the game won't complete the shift. And you must take it out of gear, clutch in, lift the throttle and reengage the gear before you can reselect the gear.

Oh, I am serious. Look, this is my serious face.

I found the secret to the Nascar events/races. Turn ASM off (if you have access to the in-game tuning menu) or just turn ABS off. Before doing this, I could barely bronze the advanced level Nascar races. I had no clue how you were supposed to get into 1st place with this car... Well I turned ABS off (this in turn eliminates the ASM) and my car rocketed. No longer was the stupid assists slowing me down through turns. In one of the advanced Nascar challenges where you have to go from 12th -> 1st in two laps, I was now in 1st before the 1st lap was even done.

The same thing works for the Nascar races in the extreme series. Turn these settings off and you will have easy wins.

Holy christ I honestly think the intermediate tarmac rally is completely broken. No matter what I do now it refuses to load. It'll get to what looks like 100% loaded but it just sits there on the loading screen.

I can go and do the extreme rally events though no problem, and the other intermediate ones worked for me as well.

Sideswiping generally seems safe, especially if you hit rear-quarter first. Whenever I'm going to hit a wall, I plant throttle to try to get rotation and hit rear end-end first, and I usually don't get a DQ.

I could never really dig "cockpit" modes in any game. They give you a view of the interior of whatever you're driving without taking into account the field of view a person normally has when driving/flying/whatever, so to me it just sort of looks less realistic than a roof camera.

My biggest qualm with this game is how lovely the tracks look. They still have those cardboard "+"-shaped trees? After six years, seriously? Not to mention the reflections on the hood of the cars are this weird dot matrix/digital camo pattern that's just distracting. I understand it's difficult to render things in HD when the majority of people are going to be blasting through these tracks at 140 miles per hour in the cockpit/hood cam, but there must have been a better way to deal with this stuff. I've found that rather than just add to GT3/4, they just added a very small amount and made some other stuff less accessible. All of a sudden I have to gain a certain experience level to use mostly the same stuff that was in the previous game, just like the guns in Bad Company 2.

None of that really comes close to ruining the game for me, as I was really just fine with an HD port of GT4, but it certainly is a little disappointing if I dwell on it. Like while I'm staring at the installation screen that's been frozen at "20 minutes left" for about 15 minutes now. Still, it's not really the game's fault, it's the fault of all the hype some games get that creates unrealistic expectations.
