Holidays are times to spend with family; but I hate when everybody wants to go shopping. Went to eat with my folks tonight. Plotted with pop to avoid the shopping trips. "Picking up GT5 tomorrow. We're building a wheelstand, then to my place for extensive testing." "They have the 454 from '70; but no cockpit. My Challenger is one of the only premium muscle cars from that era. Cuda's not premium. My old Mustang isn't even in, and there's no GTO at all, unless you count the piece of crap family sedan they tried branding as such in recent years. It's pretty sad. Hope you like Japanese cars." "That's the idea." (I about fell out of my chair laughing when he pegged the Skyline in spite of knowing nothing more than "that car game, made in Japan".)

I ended up buying GT from Wal-Mart and decided to play a quick race in arcade mode before doing a full install. I played on a rainy track, and the graphics were pretty bad - the windshield wipers and rain effects were extremely pixelated. I'm assuming that they were still loading, but they never did during the race for some reason. The cursor also would not appear on the menus and I had to restart the game a few times just to be able to select something. Now I'm doing a full install, which the game should require you to do anyway if it's that unplayable without it. I'm still excited to play - just thought I'd warn anybody who is considering ignoring the full install.

Has anyone figured out how to change the controls on the Fanatec wheel? I'm using the Porsche Turbo S one and all I'm seeing are a bunch of Logitech wheels in the options. I just want to reverse my sequential shifter.

I dunno, I did the introductory full install when asked, and I still ran into quite a bit of menu lag (not between menus, but in car/course selection, for example.) It seems there's another install to be done within the main options menu -- I'm doing that now. I noticed that menus behaved a lot more fluidly after I had cycled through them once. edit - that secondary install was really short, and it made the menus more or less lag-free. I don't know why that isn't lumped into the initial install.

Yeah, even after you do the main install, the game will still install a bunch of crap as you play. The first time you do something, it will be longer than normal because it's installing, but the next time it should be quicker. With that said, loading times can still be longer than expected, but they aren't terrible. Just read the Eurogamer review and stumbled upon this:quote:The game's lack of a car classification system (less of an issue in the offline GT Mode than it used to be) means an unruly free-for-all that will soon stamp out the use of anything other than thousand-horse monsters. Is this true? I really enjoyed C/B/A class races in Forza and it would be nice to restrict races to a certain group/class/level of cars.

This game is pretty drat fantastic from the few hours that I played. As I was playing my friends and we have determined that we are going to have a drunk driving championship in GT5 in the future. It will be a fantastic night.

For those of you teetering on the edge of technology like me, and own a 1080i HDTV as opposed to a 1080p, definitely opt to play this in 1080i as opposed to 720p. Every facet of this game was meant to be rendered at 1920x1080. 720p pixelizes everything. Then, turn force feedback up, car sounds up, and race BGM down or off. Best racing simulation ever, menu/UI boo-hoos be damned.

Hmm. Here's my initial impressions after a couple hours of playing. Surely I'm not alone on some of this: Sound effects still leave a lot to be desired. Same repetitive stuffy generic "tire squeal" sound so far. Drove through a tunnel, no echo (is it like that for anyone else)?! Colliding with stuff, I hear a dull "thud" or "thunk". This was with a premium car too. I do like the engine sound and exhaust note improvements though. Shadows, graphics in general...I have a premium car, and there are some really nasty shadow glitches. It's not just my car, I see awful shadows and general jagginess in lots of places. It's just distracting. Lighting in general just seems a bit weird. And the background of a lot of the tracks I've played so far don't seem much improved from GT4, just higher res and more draw distance. I know they added the "levels" and stuff, but control seems much, much easier than previous versions. It just feels kinda dumbed-down so far. I'm hoping that changes very quickly as you level up because so far it's almost boring. I'm playing with the Dualshock...no wheel. Don't hate me guys, I'm just being honest according to what I've seen so far

I live in Madrid, so when I learned of the launch party here I spent an hour or two looking for where and when it would be held. I couldn't find anything, so I had forgotten about it. Then, on my way home from work it found me. They had just started setting up the place, there were just two "pods". This is the outside:![]() and this is the inside. ![]() I don't have a lot of free time, but if it's going on same time today I'll stick around for half an hour and report back poty fucked around with this message at Nov 24, 2010 around 10:36 |

Turning up the car sound effects to 120% (for whatever reason that is possible) helped a bit. However, having picked the EK9 Civic Type-R as my first car, of course the first thing I would pay attention for was the audible VTEC crossover, which is much more absent than it should be. Perhaps once I work my way up to the 2007 Civic Type-R, in which Honda's engineers specifically tuned the resonance of the intake to make the VTEC crossover more "in your face" ( Of course, I'm currently playing this game in the middle of the night with lovely wooden walls separating me from my neighbors, so the volume on my home theater system isn't doing the game justice right now. Certain shadows jumped out at me too, like holy poo poo jumped out at me. Someone likened this to the PS3's GPU, I have no idea, but it looks god awful in an otherwise gorgeous game (except for when you're closing in a car slowly but surely, and catch a glimpse of that strange hexagonal exhaust tip... yup, standard car.) Lighting, though, no complaints at all thus far, if you consider shadows a different category. In motion, it's fine, because I'm staring intently at apexes for the majority. During the countdown before the race, though, it's impossible to miss. The shadows look flat out terrible. The controls on a DFGT feel great to me, maybe a touch more forgiving than they'd be in real life. I've made some magical recoveries so far that I'm sure would've put me facing the wrong direction if I were driving a real car, but nothing arcade-like. I had to turn the force feedback up to 8 from the default 5 to get an authentic steering feel. The default 5 made the cars I've driven thus far feel as if they weighed a fraction of their actual curb weight. enojy fucked around with this message at Nov 24, 2010 around 10:48 |

Whoa, B-Spec is way different now. And I guess you can't accelerate it 3x like back in GT4, or am I just not pushing the right buttons? Anyway, I think I'm gonna call it quits tonight and try coming back to it when I'm "fresh" tomorrow. I've been up for 12 hours now so maybe I'm just a bit too cranky for such an undertaking.

Reading through the reviews and they are about what I was expecting. Fantastic racing experience, but everything else is a bit rough around the edges. Hopefully Polyphony will patch it. There has already been one patch and a second is coming in December to add in the Gran Turismo Anywhere feature and i'm assuming fix more issues.

Can you play the entire A-spec mode in automatic with driving assists, or at higher levels are you forced into manual? Does it work like Forza 3 where you get more credits for racing with harder settings?

| # ? Nov 24, 2010 13:23 |

There really aren't any driving assists. You can play in automatic, but the game tries to stay realistic the entire way through. There are only a few minor assists and if you want to learn how to be really good you'll have to take the driving tests. They aren't required though. [edit] Also, someone explain the time trial leaderboards. One review made it seem like that didn't make it into the game? How do those work?
