Another vote for right stick gas/brake here. It's much easier to modulate than the symbol buttons. Definitely has a harsher learning curve than just switching your buttons around, though

I tuned up a '79 Civic CX for the Japanese Classic thing. Cost like 3.5k in the used lot and ended up with 150hp/750kg. Fun car Getting a b-spec driver to win in said car is a different story :\

Things I've learned about legitimately (i.e. merely using cars that should win, not super-overpowered cars) doing bspec so far: keeping your driver's meter from .5-.75 (if you view coolest->hottest as a 0-1 scale) is the most important thing. Even if your car is fast enough to win, he will gently caress up and find a way to not be in first if his meter is too hot for too long. Thus, use the Reduce Pace command freely. The thing to keep in mind is that your driver generally won't fall behind other drivers because you issued a Reduce Pace command--he still battles it out to keep his spot, he just does it more calmly. If your car is fast enough, he will overtake people even while being kept calm with Reduce Pace. Once your man is in first, just try to keep him between .25 and .5 using Increase Pace. If he gets too cool in a close race, he may fall behind again, and you don't want that always make sure you have the grippiest tires possible for a given race. It gets expensive but you will win 99% of the races you're supposed to win instead of just most of them if your car is fast off the line, you can issue an overtake command just before the countdown finishes and your driver will attempt to pass as many people as possible right away. depending on how clustered the field is/how fast the driver's meter goes up, you may then want to lower pace ASAP Before I figured out all of this, my first driver went 8 wins/21 races. Since I figured out all of this, it's something like 14/15 TheQat fucked around with this message at Nov 29, 2010 around 23:09 |

I gave him a ZR-1 RM'd, fully loaded and he is only winning by 6 seconds a race? Just wondering: what are the tire restrictions on the races you guys entered these b-spec drivers in? I'm guessing they drive poorly because the cars are way overpowered for the tires. Most races in b-spec beginner/amateur are restricted to sport tires of some kind, which will seriously hinder anyone's ability to drive a RM'd ZR-1, TVR, or super Jag--AI or not.

Cyborgmatt posted:The British Lightweight only allows Comfort tyres (which is dumb) so I had no choice, problem is the standard of cars the AI have is pretty high in that race and I couldn't find anything that matches them except for the TVR. So I'm kind of snookered with that one for now. Yeah, the ones that require comfort tires are pretty BS It might be best to try something very lightweight in that case, like a Lotus or Caterham (if the race allows it).

Yodzilla posted:So what's better for control of high horsepower, soft casual or hard racing? I'm pretty sure it's a direct progression of grip, from comfort hard->soft->sport hard->soft->racing hard->soft. Cyborgmatt posted:Why do some cars have missing info in the description, shows as ---, there's a few in the dealership as well that have missing weight info etc so it isn't a used car thing. Just some standard GT weirdness. There have been cars missing official weight/power info in every game--off the top of my head I'm not sure why but it may have something to do with values for race cars being potentially variable. (The wiki page on the Mazda 787B indicates that it could run up to 920HP but was usually run at 750, for instance.) The text description of the car will usually give you approximate values.

Nick Biped posted:So for specialty races like "Japanese Classic Cars", do you just have to hope such a specific car shows up in the used dealership? There doesn't seem to be anything like that in the new dealerships, and the only one that I have is a '58 Subaru I won with a baseline of 14HP, so I don't think that'll do much for me. Yes, but it won't take long; there are 40 or more pre-79 Japanese cars in this game. Any early Skyline, Mazda 110 (particularly these--they are my b-spec drivers' arch-nemesis), Civic, etc. will do fine

I actually love that you have to set your own difficulty on the seasonal races now. I don't have much time for GT5 at all, don't have a wheel (or room for one), and I'm not very good at the game, so the prior difficulty level was way too steep. Now I actually stand a chance of continuing to advance in the game--assuming they continue to release unrestricted events.
