As for the game so far: I am loving the production values. Textures straight out of 1998, the most generic SFX they could find (the squirrels in the first video used stock monkey sounds for crying out loud)... but despite it all there is that strong sense of love for the craft oozing through. It is abundantly clear that the people who made this game had fun making it, and those games tend to be fun for the player too... as long as they are not taken too seriously.

Same here. The odd effects land right on the line, where you can't tell if they're deliberately using them to play up the surreal atmosphere or not.

I honestly thought you'd edited in the music when Polly was introduced, and then it just kept going and I realized it was the game. Holy gently caress this is insane. I just kept thinking 'Nah, he's gonna turn off that music any second and it was just a silly gimmick that makes you laugh but it isn't really in the game'. NOPE, just kept going and I just couldn't stop laughing like an idiot.

Please let them release a PC version eventually. Talking to Polly is reason enough to own this game; if only I had a console.

Yeah, the game is still unmistakably a Twin Peaks fangame (effectively), but by having to cut out the direct references and forcing Swery65 to actually tell a fresh story, I really do think it turned out for the best.

On an aside, 90% of the graphical/presentational failings can be chalked up to a pair of reasons.

A: The game was originally planned for a dual release on PS2 and 360.
B: The game was in development hell for years, required major re-working at one point, and was low-budget to begin with.

That still doesn't explain some of the issues (there are some areas of Greenvale that are straight out of a PS1/Dreamcast game), but it really helps if you need to forgive the game its sins in order to really get your teeth into it.

Can't wait for the next update. Loving the aesthetics of the game and the commentary is likewise perfectly suited.

I'd love to play along, but for reasons that aren't particularly clear, it was never released here. I guess they figured it would be refused classification and wanted to save themselves the trouble or something? Either way, quite annoying.

Grah, I never understood why the normal DVD set doesn't have the pilot.

Though has the "for the love of GOD stop watching when David Lynch leaves the show" advice been mentioned yet? Because you should stop watching the show after David Lynch leaves.

I said earlier that once the Laura Palmer storyline is resolved, it goes downhill rapidly until the final couple of episodes. It's not entirely bad, per se, but you can tell it's treading water since they clearly have no clue what to do with the series. And stuff like Ben Horne going loopy really doesn't help any.

I think it was best described as "Twin Peaks: The Fanfic". And it really does once you type it all out.

So a girl who looks juuuust like Laura Palmer shows up but she's kooky like Agent Cooper and they fall in LOVE and then she wins a beauty pageant because she's the prettiest girl in the whole town but then she's kidnapped by Cooper's ex-partner who's like a million times more evil then Bob and then they go back to the red room!!!

Terrible conclusion to the show; great as a drunken marathon.

I think the primary reason they brought Annie in was because someone was a little worried at the idea of a teenage girl hitting repeatedly on an FBI agent and the agent, on occasion, seeming to consider it. I don't think she looked much like Laura Palmer though. Are you sure you're not thinking of Maddy?

Yeah, I've always told people to drop the show at that point since...the latter part of that season is just godawful. At least it is fairly easy to deter people from watching after that point. Just mention David Duchovny in drag and they're done.

If I remember right, Kyle Maclachlan nixed it himself, supposedly because of the teenage girl/FBI agent thing, but his being involved with Lara Flynn Boyle at the time probably had a bit to do with it as well.

I could swear I watched the whole series just this past year, but I can't remember anything after the Laura Palmer story. Not even Duchovny's part. I think that says it all.

But, yeah, I can't say I'm surprised that a Japanese developer would make a TP homage game like this. It was popular enough over there to cause things like this coffee commercial series to happen:

Are you kidding? That right there made watching the rest of the series worthwhile.

Also, watching them after the murder is solved is tolerable if you're watching it with someone else and making fun of how absolutely horrible it gets. Also if you like lame, desperate soap operas. (Which I do.)

I recall reading somewhere that a lot of the character animation in DP is actually recycled from Swery's previous game, Spy Fiction. That'd explain why it looks so awkward and mid-gen PS2-ish.

The first thing that ever brought Twin Peaks to my attention was learning that it was the inspiration for the original Persona. In fact, its influence can probably still be felt today, what with the whole otherwise-nice-town-with-horrible-supernatural-weird-evilness thing that each entry in the Persona series sticks with. What with being an investigation at it's core, I think Persona 4 may be the most Twin Peaks of the bunch. Just not as much as this game.

I hadn't seen it before, it's an interesting alternate look, especially at some of the character's original appearances. Unfortunately it's also got a pretty big spoiler for the end of Chapter 10 in it, so I wouldn't recommend linking to it until then.
