Number 1: Be prepared to pay more.

Browse through shops in the area either online or visit them. See if the work in their portfolio corresponds to the style of what you have in mind. (i.e. some are more proficient and skillful at old school, portraits, color, black and gray, et cetera)

When you find your guy/gal, mock your tattoo idea up in Photoshop or doodle it out to the best of your ability. It doesn't have to look pretty, but detailed enough to let them know what it is you want. They should be more than happy to custom draw the design for you. If not?

The artist might also trace the area to fit the design to the shape to make it flow naturally (like if you have a neighboring tattoo to work around or if it's on your chest going up to your shoulder). So some artistic liberty might be taken but of course not without the discretion of the person being tattooed.

isnt that right

It's blurry but after playing with different characters on a translator I think it's something about the United states and either sister/friends or Hong Kong....
If it wasn't so blurry it'd be much easier.

I knew a guy from Vancouver who had an authentic katakana tattoo on his neck that translated to "ignorant cracker," exclusively for the comedy factor. This is the same guy who had a fully-detailed,life-like tattoo of an uzi protruding from his sock, which is less funny than potentially dangerous and obviously dumb. Right about now I'm wishing I'd taken pictures. Nice guy, though.

This is why you shouldn't get tattooed in a language you don't understand.

quote:

A TEENAGER who paid £90 to have his arm tattoed with Chinese characters got a shock when he learned the message read: 'At the end of the day, this is an ugly boy.'
Hairdresser Lee Becks thought he had Mandarin for 'Love, honour and obey' etched into his skin.
The 18-year-old found out that he had been tricked when he saw the effect it had on a woman serving at a Chinese take-away.
'At first, she said something about me making people laugh and talked about a crown,' he said.
'But then I realised she was really saying clown, not crown. The young woman blushed and was very reluctant to translate for me. Then she admitted what it really said.'
A 'totally mortified' Mr Becks went back to the tattoo parlour in Southend, the next day - only to find it had closed.
He added: 'I suspect the tattooist knew he was closing and just wanted to get his own back for some reason. I always wanted a tattoo and the design looked great. Now I am stuck with it but have to keep it covered up.'
When he dared show off his arm at a nightclub, a group of Chinese girls came up - and burst out laughing. Even his friends have been finding it hard to keep straight faces.
His employer, Gary Doyle, said: 'He's a bit sensitive about the tattoos - they look very trendy if you don't know what they really mean. I don't think Lee stands much of a chance with any attractive young Chinese lady he may meet.'
Mr Becks plans to spend £600 to have the tattoo removed by laser

Not only is this tattoo, sans explanation, technically weird (what's with that nose?), but the person who got it described it as his "unfortunate-victim-of-child-abduction-with-her-mouth-taped-shut-awaiting-her-snuff-flick-style-demise" tattoo and explained that the girl depicted in it is a "pre-teen surprise sex victim"

OK, what the gently caress is this. Is everybody just going to start posting Sailor Jerry style tattoos? Yes they look a bit cartoonish, but that was the style at the time. If you look at old school flash, thats what most of the tattoos look like.

Looking at the one above, all I can see wrong with it is the neck is a bit funny. And the legs look a bit big, but that could just be perspective. Or am I missing something something massively obvious? (If I am I retract the above rant).

Inspector_71 posted:

I don't like the tattoo, but I think it makes it a little better than someone who gets a tattoo of a t.v show based on a toy aimed at another gender that they probably didn't play with during their childhood.

One hand is tiny compared to the other, her calves are the same size as her thighs, and her feet are massive. It's just an awkward rear end pose too, my best friend wants to get one of these.. I'll show him this and see if he doesn't change his mind.
