They're never gonna let those two hop in an A-10 ever again.

How exactly did they crash? Was it on Vatsim? If yes, that is quite hilarious.

4. Pull up

There's a new expansion for Strike Fighters 2 series of games.

It adds an awesome English Electric Lightning in various flavours of variants, a bunch of new variants for the awesome Hawker Hunter, some more Super Sabre variants, a new European campaign set in 1956, a mission editor which looks pretty neat but simple, and some engine optimisations for multi-core processors.

I'm having a blast with the '56 European campaign, blasting through MiG 15's and the like in my Hawker which is a loving brilliant plane. Also the multi-core stuff seems to be doing the job as I can run the game on 'unlimited' graphics without a problem now.

Where does one start with Strike Fighters stuff then? Is there an easy/cheap way to get it all bundled up? Or is it a case of buying each of the games separately?

There was a bundle last Xmas with the core games (SF2, SF2 Vietnam, SF2 Europe and SF2 Israel) but it was a special one-off thing. I grabbed it back then. If you want absolutely everything then you have to buy them all and install in order to get all the campaign maps and planes plus the expansion packs. If you don't want to do that then that plane list or the game product pages lists what's included in each game.
Also there's poo poo loads of mods adding in new planes and campaigns and graphics and whatnot.

Perhaps TK will have another bundle for sale for Xmas this year, if so I recommend grabbing that bitch. It's not a super serious sim, nor is it an arcade game. Feels a nice little niche which nobody else seems to bother with these days. Plus the campaigns are dynamic, nothing like the insane detail of Falcon 4.0s campaign but nothing is set in stone scripted and your actions in the air can affect the outcome of the war quite a bit.

The guy who's behind these games worked on some old classics like European Air War, Jane's Longbow and Jane's F-15. He's pretty much a one man team and churns out these awesome light sims, expansions and addons like some sort of crazy machine. Since discovering the games last year I've become a huge fanboy of his.

Fake edit: jsut saw your list, naw if you want it all I'm afraid you're gonna have to shell out for all the SF2 titles or wait and see if there's a bundle deal like last year.

Another edit: I guess the best thing to do if you don't want to shell out or if he doesn't release another bundle is to check out the product pages of the games here and find one that has the planes that most interests you. Each game has its own campaign/map, usually about 3-4 campaigns, Vietnam has Rolling Thunger, Linebacker I, II, Europe has various fictional cold war gone hot scenarios set at different years over Germany mostly, Israel has the Six Days War, Yom Kippur War and Lebanon War, and the stock SF2 game has some wars set in a fictional middle east country with the option as playing as a mercenary force in various campaigns. Expansion Pack 1 is mostly for Israel, adds the Suez Crisis and a couple of early jets and the Spitfire and Mustang, the second one is for Europe and adds the Lightning, an early Europe campaign and mission editor. You can merge install everything so that no matter what .exe you run it's all pretty much the same, can chose any campaign in any theatre and any plane that's available for the date.

Also I should note that there's no multiplayer. It doesn't bother me that much as I'm not much of an MP sort of guy but I know some might be put off by it.

Are there any flight simulator games where two or more people can control the same plane?

I don't know much about flight sims (or air planes in general) but I remember playing Air Warrior a loooooong time ago and a group of players could control a bomber. One player would be the pilot, another the navigation, and yet another the gunner, etc.

Does anything like that exist that lots (?) of people still play?

If you have IL-2, the Straight from the Farm tutorial does exactly this. I think you have to go through the THIS IS THE THROTTLE exercises first, though.

Roughly, as I recall, it was:

1. Climb hella high and position over target
2. Extend airbrake, drop throttle to nil, flop over on your belly, pull stick until target shows in your sights
3. Peer through the bomb droppin sight thingy and keep target in sights
4. Drop bomb at just the right moment
5. Retract airbrake, open throttle, pull head out of bomb sights, pray your bomb detonates when you're far away enough and that you don't get shot to poo poo in the interim

Will this have any drat thing to do with Aces of the Pacific from 1992? No idea, but it's a drat rush in IL-2.

This depends. How many monitors do you have? With two or more monitors, you can stick the MFCDs or other bits of the cockpit onto other monitors and not have to worry so much about having to move around to see what's going on. It's certainly playable without TrackIR, Quincy has nothing and is passable as my wingman . I'd still plan on getting one.

The thing played like crap, I was skidding diagonally across the ground, everything looked horrible, the interface was horrible for 20 years ago, and the sound was worse than 1991 era "PC speaker sound".

Is this a fair assessment of FlightGear?

THIS. Orbiter is a hardass game to master (especially interplanetary flight) but successfully flying the Delta IV from Cape Canaveral to FUCKIN MARS is extremely rewarding. The best part is when you fast forward between trajectory burns and the little x speed indicator on top reads "120,000x". One day I will do a flight to the moon in real time....and will never get laid again

For the guy earlier asking about Orbiter mods, I know a while back I encountered an Apollo 11 add-on which had good things said about it on their forums.

Also, how many people on here play F4: Allied Force? I think I've been spending too much time on simhq because I've been thinking a virtual goon squadron would be awesome...but I'm assuming anyone interested would be too busy crashing in DCS: A-10.

This would be the thread to ask it in.

Joysticks.

So all those fancy stick makers in the OP are loved by various people. But I'm not one of them. What I want, what I would sell my soul for, what I need to fly decently, is what 'Game Controllers' in the control panel refers to as a '2 button - 2 axis' control stick. You know how 10 years ago you could get crappy little 15-20 dollar made in china joysticks. Life expectancy one year. Does anyone know if anyone anywhere is still making them?

I've tried a poo poo load of these fancy modern sticks and I hate them all. My current beast is the Saitek AV8R, and its far far to stiff for fine flying. Which is a common trend I've noticed with any stick that mounts the spring above the base, ex. Cyborg. Although it makes sense from a durability stand point, I invariably end up bob and weaving all over fighting the strength of the spring.

Logitech sticks have always been the other way for me. Far too loose. My planes keep veering off in strange directions because the stick won't even pretend to stay centered. The big mass of buttons is invariably too heavy for the springs to keep it upright.

I really loved those cheap piece of poo poo sticks that use to be everywhere. Light cheap plastic so it would stay upright with springs weak enough I could pull back from a dive with two fingers. I could probably find some old used ones on eBay, but I'd rather find a current manufacturer so I can buy replacements.

I figure if they're still being made, someone here would know where. And I'll love you forever.

Well, unless you're a completionist, you don't need to fork out money really. All aircraft are included in the game as AI, so even if you only own a handful of planes through their store you can still go up against planes you don't own in singleplayer or multiplayer. Paying for individual planes sucks, but you won't be handicapped because of your stinginess. They've also just added an option for the newly implemented mult-seat aircraft where someone that doesn't own said aircraft can at least jump into supporting roles as gunner/bomber in multiplayer.

For those that don't know, there is a demo, and you can upgrade to the Iron Cross Edition which includes the SPAD XIII, Fokker D.VII, Nieuport N.28, Albatros D.Va, Fokker DR. 1, Pfalz D.IIIa, S.E.5a, Sopwith Camel and Nieuport 17.

I didn't like the tension on the AV8R either, so I used a couple twist-ties to partially compress the spring. A little tweaking of the tightness, and a touch a lube around the rim of the bucket and I found that it performs much more smoothly.
